The in fill from many Atenist temples has been removed particularly from the inside of the ninth pylon and much of the area around the eighth to tenth pylons is largely covered in various blocks of variously decorated stone all eventually waiting new homes in restored chapels such as that of Hatshepsut's Chapelle Rouge in the Open Air Museum. Karnak Chapel Amenhotep 1 EG074906jhp Egyptian hieroglyphs Karnak Amenhotep Alabaster Chapel Museum detail cartouche Horus was one of the original exhibits in the Open Air Museum in the Karnak complex on the East Bank of the Nile at Luxor. It is not usually part of the standard tour package so has to be entered ‘privately’ and an additional ticket purchased on entry, accessed from the First Forecourt through the eastern gate past the famous standing statue of Ramses 11. Passing through an area full of stored blocks rescued from other parts of the Karnak site, you can view restored chapels including this one of Amenhotep 1 alabaster barque chapel of whom little is recorded, who ruled around 1550-24BC and although his mummy was found in the 1881 royal mummy cache but this beautiful small chapel is one delightful reminder of his 25 year reign. There is another alabaster chapel from the reign of Thutmosis 1V, the exquisite White Chapel of Senwosret 1, the Chapelle Rouge of Hatshepsut and a recent larger addition is the reconstruction of Thutmosis IV [Thutmose] Festival Court for a quiet, contemplative and beautiful experience to the busy main Karnak tour. Photos of the recently opened Temple of Merneptah site on West Bank at Luxor with coloured reliefs, open air museum exhibits and interior carvings and paintings.
Merneptah Painted Relief EG051892JHP Temple Merneptah Ancient Egyptian Hieroglyphs Duck Sedge Bee Ankh Henen in museum annex for pharaoh who reigned around 1212-1202BC, is on the West Bank of the Nile at Luxor and was recently opened not long before these photos were taken in 2005. It is a mixture of open air and covered museum exhibits with some remains of the temple area with column bases. Some of the coloured wall reliefs are exquisite and because of the natural light available were easily photographed despite being inside. There is also a replica of the famous Israeli Stele, the original being in the Cairo Museum. This is a visit that would have to made outwith the usual West Bank package tour although easily arranged and is easily found next to the Ramasseum. Has Ramesside Temple of Amun with other temples from reigns of Osorkon, Sheshonq and Ptolemy but of special interest are the Royal Tombs where that of Psusennes in particular was intact and gave up one of the richest burial good collections, apart from Tutankhamun, with its famous silver coffin, now in the Cairo Museum. A visit to Tanis is usually by private means but can be incorporated with a day trip through the Delta visiting Heliopolis and Tell Basta but does involve considerable motoring. Butterflies are cold blooded and require a certain body heat to be able to fly and this is one method they use to keep them mobile and on this day it was clouding over periodically. Numbers this summer of 2018 are marginally down on a decade ago but my maximum daily count by the end of August 2018 on the most sunny days has been well in excess of 50 peacocks, three Red Admirals and an occasional Small Tortoiseshell. I am hoping that my planned planting of another dozen buddleias around the wild garden to add to the 6 established ones will boost numbers. The bees have been very busy all summer and a bumper crop of apples is evidence they did their job in the spring.
