This gallery contains pictures of the two main sites usually visited together on a day trip south of Cairo - Saqqara with the famous Step Pyramid, a huge necropolis with many tombs and other pyramids and Memphis, the ancient capital of Egypt now will an open air museum with the alabaster sphinx and the huge partial statue of Ramasses 11.
Saqqara EG9511413jhp
Ancient Egypt limestone Enclosure Step Pyramid ureaus cobra Zoser Saqqara dating from around 2500BC to the south of Cairo is the earliest stone built monument in Egypt and probably in the world and near the ancient Egyptian capital of Memphis and was designed by Imhotep, one of the greatest minds in ancient Egypt and later deified as a God. Construction is with small bricks of fine white limestone giving this huge building a very delicate structure and aesthetic appearance. Still one of the highlights of any visit to Egypt, despite the wealth of fantastic places to see, and for me best enjoyed towards the evening when the site is often quiet and the face of the pyramid from the colonnade entrance is bathed in soft golden light.

Egypt Saqqara farmland field dates palm trees green crops plantation gives a very good idea of the reason for the location of this huge sprawling necropolis built along the desert escarpment well above the inundation zone of the River Nile. The fertile land supported the communities that built and later serviced these cult areas where the Valley Temple for instance would be the receiving place for offerings in memory of a particular Pharaoh after he became a God. The modern world needs food and these fertile areas still border the road from Cairo to Saqqara offering Egypt a substantial export business from dates to potatoes.

Saqqara Tomb EG02AA91jhp
Saqqara Unas carvings reliefs ancient Egyptian mastaba sunken hieroglyphics buried that remain alongside the restored causeway from the Pyramid of Unas near the Step Pyramid and which slopes down to the Valley Temple first seen as visitors arrive at this major complex near Memphis. Recent archaeological work has discovered tombs underneath the causeway such as that of the Two Brothers while many other undiscovered or partially excavated ones lie alongside the causeway as do boat pits but there are also some sunken half buried tomb entrances such as this. A photo from 2011 on the Internet shows that is has been cleared now for safe access but I cannot determine who it was for.

Khenu was the son of Nefer, the Inspector of artisans and singers. I could find little information about Khenu and in several reference books/guide books his mastaba is not mentioned. Ancient Egypt Uraeus freize south tomb closeup cobras painted Saqqara dating from around 2500BC to the south of Cairo is the earliest stone built monument in Egypt and probably in the world and near the ancient Egyptian capital of Memphis and was designed by Imhotep, one of the greatest minds in ancient Egypt and later deified as a God. Construction is with small bricks of fine white limestone giving this huge building a very delicate structure and aesthetic appearance.
