Photographs of the three Giza pyramids of Khufu, Khafre and Menkaure, the Sphinx, temples, Solar Barque museum and western cemetery mastabas, including the Light and Sound Show night views.
Painted Carving Iymery EG050946jhp Iymery mortuary wall painting boats fishing oar hemu beating water cemetery mastaba carvings painted wall reliefs left in this colourful mortuary chapel situated in the Western cemetery between the Great Pyramid and that of Khafre and open to the public and a welcome diversion from the crowds that surround the nearby Pyramid of Khufu. These photographs are a mixture of natural light time-exposures and some using the rare opportunity to light with flash, given the go-ahead by the custodian. They were taken in JPEG’s whereas today I would always use RAW files and having the advantage of a tripod I would always use natural or even mixed light where possible thus avoiding flash hot spots; flash incidentally does not cause damage to the paintings despite many such claims and restrictions. Beato Edfu Temple 8394VQJHP Edfu Anicent Egyptian Temple Colonnade Beato Photograph Albumen Print is at a site located by the River Nile and is one of the main visits for most Luxor to Aswan cruise packages. One of the best preserved temples in Egypt this one is dedicated to the falcon God Horus and his granite likeness is probably one of the most photographed relicts in Egypt and was photographed by Antonio Beato, a Victorian photographer probably around 1870. Beato Karnak Hypostyle Hall 8381VQJHP Karnak Temple Hypostyle Hall Columns Egyptians Donkey Frith Photo Old Albumen located near Luxor City centre on the East Bank of the River Nile and it is the largest religious complex on the Nile. This is the famous hypostyle hall looking towards the entrance pylon down the processional way with a local guide and donkeys to give a sense of scale. Beato Edfu Temple 18JHP05 Edfu Temple Pylon Highview River Nile Beato Old Victorian Albumen Photo Print is at a site located by the River Nile and is one of the main visits for most Luxor to Aswan cruise packages. One of the best preserved temples in Egypt this one is dedicated to the falcon God Horus and his granite likeness is probably one of the most photographed relicts in Egypt. Originally erected by Senwosret 1 it is mainly supplanted by the current Ptolemaic creation dating from 237BC, this particular part being started 116-71BC along with the present pylon and was photographed by Antonio Beato, a Victorian photographer around 1890 and this copy is taken from his album called The Nile 1872. It is little changed from the modern situation as seen in identical viewpoints in the modern Gallery except that a large town now obscures the open view to the river in the Beato photo. Blackhall Castle Gates xvv1200jhp Banchory Blackhall silver granite gates castle fishing lodge Deeside summer is located just before crossing the road bridge over the River Dee into Banchory coming from the south. This large Deeside town on the River Dee some 18 miles west of Aberdeen in North East Scotland. It has always been a main visitor centre either for day trippers from Aberdeen or the usual flow of coaches and other visitors heading from Aberdeen westwards to Braemar and from there south to Perth or north to Inverness. It is also offers a very scenic route southwards over the Cairn O’Mount to Mearns. The gates are all that remains of the castle, demolished after WW2 but now serves as a fishing lodge and entrance to the fishing beat alongside the River Dee on the south bank extending westwards. Although the gates tend to be locked it is not ‘private’ land and should be accessible as a riverside walk in terms of the Land Reform [Scotland] Act 2003. Now more prominent than usual as the area around this imposing granite monolith has been clear felled. There is a slight rough layby by the roadside allowing access up a grassy path amongst broom and heather. The monument was erected in 1951 by the Deeside Field Club to commemorate the Battle of Corrichie of 1562 between the forces of Mary Queen of Scots lead by the Earl of Moray who beat those led by the Gordon’s of Huntly, in several battles between the Reformation and a possible Catholic resurgence. Inscribed on the stone in Gaelic are “Cuimhnichibh La Coire Fraoichidh” translated as Remember the Day of Corrichie. Although Queen Mary is claimed to have sat and watched the battle she was in fact in Aberdeen and both the ‘Queens Chair’, a granite outcrop on Berry Hill and Queen Mary’s well are probably fictional creations. Craigievar Beating Retreat 71931JHP Craigievar Castle Pipeband Bagpipes Kilts Drum-major Beating Retreat Scottish Aberdeenshire event on National Trust for Scotland property is situated about 6 miles south of Alford A980 and is open to the public from March to end of August although closed during 2008/9 for major renovation on the exterior it is open again as of 2010. Grounds are normally open all year round. This was an occasional event by a local pipeband beating retreat at the close of the season. Example of the best in Scottish Baronial architecture, dating from 1626, and is unspoiled since being relinquished to the NTS by the Forbes-Sempill family. MacBeath s Hill Brodie UP280339jhp Scotland Morayshire Brodie Macbeth Hill Witches spring yellow gorse sunny green grass is situated near Brodie Castle on a small back road to the north of the A96 at Hardmuir. Tradition claims is was the site claimed by Shakespeare in his play Macbeth where the King of the same name met the three Witches. It is identified on Ordnance Survey maps as Macbeth’s Hillock. Nearby Brodie Castle which lies between Forres and Nairn in Morayshire Scottish Highlands is home of the Brodie family, the castle perhaps dates back as far as 1160 and came under attack from Montrose’s army but survived. Many additions were made subsequently and the collections of various items are extensive and of high quality. This became a National Trust for Scotland property in 1980 and is situated about 4.5 miles west of Forres and the grounds are open to the public all the year round.
