Aswan Nubian Museum Coffin EG052921JHP Aswan Egyptian Nubian Museum Golden Coffin of bearded priest Wennefer an exhibit inside this modern building whose foundations were laid in 1986, opened in 1997 and organised through UNESCO. Very low artificial light makes general photography difficult as well as affecting accurate colour balance. This now appears to be the only museum in Egypt where photography is still allowed although it is not easy as the ambient lighting is extremely subdued for conservation reasons. Tut 2nd Coffin EG11727JHP Egyptian Museum Exhibit face mask second gilded sarcophagus Tutankhamun photo in the prime antiquities collection in Cairo taken during visits between 1994 and 1996 when photography was allowed albeit without flash and tripod. None is of studio quality, being handheld with existing, usually extremely poor light and using slide film, pushed Fuji 400asa to get a suitable aperture and shutter speed. Most of the photos are from the Tutankahum exhibits while the rest are items that interested me as I explored this wonderful and extensive collection, requiring many more hours if not days and is only hinted at during the usual one or two hour visit made on a package tour. It is a mixture of open air and covered museum exhibits with some remains of the temple area with column bases. Some of the coloured wall reliefs are exquisite and because of the natural light available were easily photographed despite being inside. There is also a replica of the famous Israeli Stele, the original being in the Cairo Museum. This is a visit that would have to made outwith the usual West Bank package tour although easily arranged and is easily found next to the Ramasseum. Luxor Amenhotep Face EG9620925JHP Egypt Museum Luxor Cachette Interior Amenhotep Face Profile Quartzite Photograph was photographed inside this modern building on the waterfront of the River Nile with its fascinating collection covering the extensive history of ancient Egypt including items from the Tomb of Tutankahum. These particular exhibits are in an annex displaying statues discovered in 1989 in a storage pit and called The Luxor Temple Cachette of which the red quartzite life size statue of Amenhotep 111 is one of the finest pieces of carving yet found in Egypt. This photo was taken in 1996 when you could pay to take photographs but not use a tripod, now not allowed at all, and I used Kodak 5042 Tungsten Slide film which still meant hand holding was at the extremes of useful photography in low light conditions. Luxor Temple EG00613jhp Luxor Temple ancient Egyptian granite statue seated bearded Ramesses columns cartouche wall carvings located on the east bank of the River Nile at Luxor, Egypt is credited to Ramses 11 as the main builder and these are his massive granite statues that greet the visitor at the entrance to the first pylon. On the side of the huge black granite seats are carvings in excellent state of repair illustrating early the mythology of ancient Egypt, the Union of the Two Lands; Upper and Lower Egypt. Throughout this elegant structure, so much more understandable than the sprawling complex at Karnak, there are examples of the great skills of workmanship that give ancient Egyptian monuments their huge appeal and impact even in these modern days. A few isolated sites can be visited and this is called Kom es-Shogafa, also spelt es-Shoquafa, al-Shawqaiah a necropolis of catacombs and ongoing archaeology. The garden area of this site has many exhibits including sarcophagi, carved capitals as well as a reconstructed Tombs, this one is known as Tigrane [Tigran] rescued from construction work in Tigrane Pasha Street in 1952. The style of decoration in this tomb is particularly important as it shows the blending of the major influences in the City’s history-Egyptian, Greek and Roman. The City has a distinctly European rather than Egyptian feel to it; it is sometimes offered as a day trip on a Cairo package but is seldom part of the main Nile packages. I hired my own taxi and the driver was sufficiently knowledgeable to take me to the main ‘ancient’ sites I could manage in a few hours. Valley Kings EG0213055jhp Egypt Luxor Valley Tomb Mentuherkhepshef Osiris Atef Crown painting colours was son of Ramasses 1X, but his tomb was unfinished but has some excellent colourful depictions of the important ancient Egyptian Gods and although protected by Perspex panels, the custodian was very helpful and slid them back for me to take photographs in 2002 when it was still allowed. Thanks to the capability of the modern digital camera, the first and only chance I have had to use one, a Fuji S2 as photography is now banned in the Valley of Kings per se and especially in the tombs. Adjustments in Photoshop give the chance of reasonably accurate colours even when the tomb paintings were lit by low level artificial light when tripods and flash were not allowed; what could I get with a Nikon F700 and a tripod, which were allowed at one time as well. It has been covered in this huge Perspex canopy to stop the weathering that is caused by modern acid rain.
