Well signed from the road via the village, with a Historic Scotland carpark and easy access. One of the largest sites in the North East with evidence suggesting early use over a few centuries but possibly stopped around the Beaker period c 2000BC. There is evidence, along with much bone and skull fragments, of extensive cremation use and a possible wooden mortuary structure from the finds of postholes in the middle of the central area. One of the monoliths has five cup-marks in a line on its inner face. It was relocated to the henge for safe keeping during Victorian times. The site has been recently excavated by Reading University and more cremated bones in complete urns have been found.
