Images in this gallery relate to Aswan in southern Egypt covering the city, the River Nile and related sites except for more important places such as Philae, The Nubian Museum and Seheil Island Rock carvings.

This village on the West Bank is more of a tourist site as against a much more genuine village on Seheil Island which is only visited usually to see the Rock Carvings. These photos were taken with a compact camera to be less intrusive and I was advised by the tour guide not to use my professional gear. Aswan Souk Jewellery EG053102JHP Aswan Egyptian Souk Bazaar jewellery glass necklaces bangles beads stall near the promenade is full of colour with stalls and shops selling clothing, perfume bottles, spices; toys; leather goods, jewellery as well as all the necessities of common day life for local Egyptians from food, fruit, meat, eggs to all the household wares that any large supermarket would stock. It is probably the most vibrant of all the Egyptian centres street shopping centres as it caters not for the tourist and is always busy as it runs adjacent to the main River Nile waterfront for a mile or so. Aswan Nubian Museum Jewellery EG052957JHP Aswan Egyptian Nubian Museum display of early jewellery, a colourful display showing the craftsmanship of early Egyptians inside this modern air-conditioned building whose foundations were laid in 1986, opened in 1997 and organised through UNESCO. Very low artificial light makes general photography difficult as well as affecting accurate colour balance. This now appears to be the only museum in Egypt where photography is still allowed although it is not easy as the ambient lighting is extremely subdued for conservation reasons. Luxor Gold of Honour Bearer EG962097JHP Museum Luxor Exhibit Photograph Honor Carving Egyptian Man Statue Beads was taken inside this modern building on the waterfront of the River Nile with its fascinating collection covering the extensive history of ancient Egypt including items from the Tomb of Tutankahum. This particular exhibit dates from around 1400 BC recording the yellow beaded necklace symbolising a recognition of valor by a courtier or soldier and is in the museum proper and was taken in 1996 when you could pay to take photographs but not use a tripod, now not allowed at all, and I used Kodak 5042 Tungsten Slide film which still meant hand holding was at the extremes of useful photography in low light conditions. Hawara Pyramid eg013123jhp Hawara Faiyum limestone carved torso necklace beads beaded collar wesekh menat broken discarded, to the south of Cairo was the last pyramid built in the 12th Dynasty, Middle Kingdom, by the Pharaoh Amenemhet 111 of the later design using mudbrick core which still stands dominant and substantial but the limestone covering of Tura Limestone is now all missing. The entrance on the south side is visible but the high ground water table means it is flooded as are all the lower chamber areas. It is most famous for the references to the Labyrinth; a comparison of its mortuary and temple complex to that at Knossos by Herodotus although little now remains except for a large area of sandy mounds and hollows divided by a canal; new excavations are underway to determine what might still exist. This pyramid was built after the king’s first attempt at Dashur was abandoned owing to subsidence problems it appears unfinished at the time of his death c1797BC.
