Qasr al-Saghah Desert 6593EG07JHP Egyptian Western Desert Scenery Sand Barren Egypt Qasr el-Siba near a small late 12th century Egyptian worker's temple, unfinished and uninscribed at Qasr al-Saghah near the Gebel el-Qatrani worker’s town servicing the basalt mines to the west of Lake Qarun and accessible only by 4x4 on specialist tours of Egypt. It is constructed of dark brown calciferous sandstone with seven cult shrines facing a common offering table room with the probable front of the temple never finished. This photo is taken near the temple and shows the bleak and desolate desert landscape that surrounds its location. Lake Nasser Desert EG9614713jhp Egyptian desert walk sand el-Derr temple Lake Nasser Egypt barren desolate the usual backdrop to most of the sites along the shores of Lake Nasser which have been relocated to save them from flooding when the High Dam was constructed in Aswan in the 60’s. This Temple based on the design at Abu Simbel was dedicated to Re-Harakhte, Ramesses 11, Amun-Re and Ptah. Interior paintings are of excellent colour and general preservation. It is short walk from Amadah, the Temple to Amun-Re and Re-Harakhte and slightly further along id the rock cut Tome of Penniut, deputy of Wawat under Ramesses V1. These three sites are usually visited on one visit from the cruiseboat and do involve some walking on desert sand often in extreme heat as well illustared by this view taken after leaving el-Derr and walking to Pennuit. The burial chamber thought to have been robbed shortly after his death is under the ground water table and is inaccessible. The site dates back to the Middle Kingdom-Senusret’a reign was 1971-1926BC and he was the son of Amenemhet 1 building his pyramid near his fathers. Pieces of the pyramid’s capstone have been reconstructed and form a feature in what remains of the foundations of the Mortuary Temple on the east side. Photographs in this gallery show daily life along the River Nile mainly from the cruises I have undertaken over the past 10 years or so. Sites that border the Nile are included although the major temples visted have their own dedicated sites such as Edfu and Kom Ombo. One of the enjoyments of the Nile cruise is the tranquility of watching 'life go by' usually characterised by the friendliness of those you pass whether boatmen or farm workers as well as seeing wild birds close at hand. The other aspect is the service on the cruiseboats from friendly crews and the chance to relax after hectic and often crowded temple visits.

Sehel Island, Seheil Island on the River Nile amongst the cataracts near Aswan has a real Nubian village walked through to reach the large quantity of rock carvings on the boulder strewn island many of which are included in these photographs
Seheil Rock Carvings EG052656JHP Seheil Island Egypt Rock Carvings Rugged Boulders Scatter Barren on this island near Aswan amongst the River Nile cataracts. The main reason for this private excursion by motorboat was to visit the rock carvings which cover this boulder strewn part of the Nile recording many events throughout the ancient history of the Egyptian Empire spanning some 3000 years although most were made in the 18-18 Dynasties. Most were the work of officials, often before they went to Nubia or reporting their efforts on return. The most notable carving is the Ptolemaic Famine Stele which refers to a famine during the reign of Doser, famous for the Step Pyramid at Saqqara, some 2000 years before. This burning of the heather is an annual activity across the Scottish moors and hills allowing short young regenerated heather for easier access for the young grouse. Old heather gets very long, deep and thick and it is impossible for the grouse to eat and get around. On the Cabrach a few ruined crofts or farms can be seen and evidence of past Highland clearances as well as illustrating the hard life of farming in this unfertile moorland where in today’s harsh economic climate even sheep farming is a struggle. In the distance eastwards the distinct summit of the Tap O'Noth hill near Rhynie on which remains the vitrified fortifications from a Pictish hilltop fort can be seen and from which can be seen a similar relic from the past on Bennachie near Inverurie. This photo is taken on the border between Aberdeenshire and Morayshire on the main road between Rhynie and Dufftown. St Mary s Auchindour Kirk WTN1861JHP St Mary's Church Scotland Tombstones Shadows Trees Grass Moss Cemetery Aberdeenshire is situated by the Cabrach road and reached by taking first left turning after Lumsden on road to Rhynie and Huntly in North East Aberdeenshire near Morayshire. This 13th Century building was later remodelled in 16th century, with this fine Scottish medieval door and has a very beautiful sacrament house on the inside, styled like a monstrance and inserted in a lancet window - now covered by clear roof to protect it. Next to it is spectacular Craig Burn Den or gorge with large woodland of mature beech trees.
