Cottown Balgownie 191126jhp Aberdeen Cottown street Scottish River Don Crossing Brig O'Balgownie is an attractive terrace of houses from Balgownie Road in the Bridge of Don on the North side of the River which leads onto the famous single span bridge over the River Don. At this point for many centuries was the only crossing of the river and the main route north from Aberdeen originally built in the early 1300's but altered and rebuilt several times since - now only used as a footbridge with access to Seaton Park and the University grounds.. This photograph was taken in 2002 the last year I used slide film, either 35mm or 645 as my main medium for landscape photography. They are still representative of the City despite their age and is chosen because of the lovely light and colours as it can still be on the right day. Bridge of Don 191127jhp Aberdeen City Bridge Don River Spring Daffodils Bridge riverbank estuary to the north of the city and the road bridge over the River Don viewed over spring colour at Donmouth on the main road north of the City into North East Scotland. The Bridge of Don is a rapidly expanding area north of the River Don with the Aberdeen Exhibition and Conference Centre bringing many attractions to the City and it is adjacent to the Balgownie Golf Course which is a famous links course by the North Sea. This photograph was taken in 2002 the last year I used slide film, either 35mm or 645 as my main medium for landscape photography. They are still representative of the City despite their age and is chosen because of the lovely light and colours as it can still be on the right day. Aberdeen Seaton Autumn 1919512jhp Aberdeen City Seaton Park autumn colours Wallace Tower path bench is a wide expanse of parkland lying between the University and River Don to the north of the City in the North East of Scotland. The offers walks and many areas to exercise and enjoy flower displays as well with easy access across the famous Brig O’Balgownie to Donside and the banks of the River Don as it flows eventually into the North Sea. Also in the park is the Wallace Tower, a partial replica of Benholm’s House or Lodging once situated in the Netherkirkgate but demolished in 1964. The present structure incorporates some of the original stonework from this unique z-plan towerhouse and one of the four remaining 16th Century buildings in the City. Located in an ancient quarry from which the stone blocks of the construction of Kildrummy Castle, the huge artificial gully known as the Black Den was initially developed as a feature by the Gordon’s where there was a fishing pond, with various trees and shrubs. Later after the building of a bridge to give access to the New Castle built around the 1900’s by Colonel James Ogston, known in Aberdeen as ‘Soapy Ogston’ of the Aberdeen Soap Manufacturing company and with its close connections to two large hotels of to-day in the area-Norwood and Ardoe House, the gardens were further developed with a Japanese Water Garden and the addition of many new shrubs, trees and flowers. Under James Pearson Smith the modern gardens came under a Charitable Trust in 1968, giving public access in exchange for public donations and entry fee to help pay for the continuing running of the gardens. Overlooking the gardens are the ruins of the Castle and the New Castle, now the Kildrummy Castle Hotel. A small carpark is at the entrance to the road that crosses the bridge and access to the Hotel. The Castle is a Historic Scotland property with its roots set during the peak of medieval European castle construction during the early 13th century. Started by Alexander 11 and possibly later extended after a visit by Edward 1 of England in 1296. It survived many sieges, being burnt and later restored, before being largely dismantled after the Jacobite rising of 1715 when used as the headquarters for the Earl of Mar. It is a magnificent ruin and the scale of the thick walls is particularly impressive despite not being as well preserved as many similar English ruins.
