This is a collection of Infra Red Black & White film photographs taken of the main sites of mainly Ancient Egypt in the late 1990's and they give a very different feel to the sites with the particular ghostly effect of this specialised Kodak film. Karnak Temple SS98467jhp Karnak Temple Egypt Hypostyle Hall Taharqa Kiosk sunrise backlit sphinx dawn greets the visitor after entering through the first Pylon when visiting this famous site located near Luxor City centre on the East Bank of the River Nile and it the largest religious complex on the Nile. This is a typical scene in the first court after entering through the main entrance of the first pylon with the remains of the pillared kiosk of Taharqa in a single papyrus column and the large block of alabaster, possible a barque station. Beyond is the second pylon with its decorated front and the beginning of the famous hypostyle hall leading to the distant obelisks and inner sanctuary. This particular photograph was taken in 1998 as part of a Stars and Signs cruise and we were able to access the temple at sunrise before it opened to the main package tour traffic. This allowed photos to be taken in beautiful golden early morning light which was particularly useful in highlighting some of the rich wall reliefs. Karnak Hypostyle Hall EG0214046jhp Hypostyle Hall sunshine backlit Karnak Egyptian Temple Columns carving hieroglyphics taken in late afternoon light unfortunately during a sand storm so the general light was very poor. This early part of a visit to Karnak is on a huge sprawling a site located near Luxor City centre on the East Bank of the River Nile and it is the largest religious complex on the Nile. This is the most famous and awesome part of The Great Temple of Amun, the hypostyle hall with it huge columns, the central ones reaching 23m high. Originally erected by Seti 1 and was completed by his son Ramses 11 and although today despite lacking in overall perfection is still overwhelming in its scale. This photo is taken from inside the great columned hall and where diminutive figures appear one can gauge the huge scale and fantastic workmanship of the skilled builders who worked with basic tools and no modern mechanical equipment. Some signed walks start from the carpark at the top of Chapel Brae, which starts by the entrance to the Royal Highland Gathering Park and the main track leads to the Morrone marker with lovely views over the River Dee towards the west up past Mar Lodge to the Linn of Dee and northwards to the Cairngorms. The lower slops of Morrone are famous for the extensive covering of silver birch trees. After leaving the main Insch Road [B992] there is a straight followed by a curve to the right round the edge of Cothiemuir Wood. Adjacent to a field looking back to Keig there is enough room to pull off the road on the verge, cross the road and there is an obvious footpath up through the many mature trees and up a gradual slope. The walk into the stone circle takes about five minutes following the footpath which meanders through the trees and past some of the Natural Burial area plots. This is a Historic Scotland protected site, it is not signed and there is no access for wheelchairs. In the great hall is the Horn of Leys, supposedly a symbol of this grant. The tower house is one of the finest examples of the period and some of the original wall paintings still survive. At the bottom of the walled garden by the North facing border, not far from the Woodland Walk gate is a Doocot an attractive feature and useful high point for looking up the June Border, the summer jewel resplendent with many colourful plants, with the Castle as its impressive backdrop. This photo was taken in 2003 and was one of my early digital photographs using the Fuji S2Pro, a camera I had tested and decided to switch to fulltime giving up slide film. A recent upgrade of the public viewing footbridge by the old road bridge has had additional interest by the creation of a wooden sculpture created for the ‘selfies’ as an alternative to allowing padlocks to be attached to the wire screens which was becoming a safety hazard given the accumulated weight. The viewing area is very popular for watching the salmon leaping up the falls on their annual migration to the spawning beds in the burns that feed the Water of Feugh especially in the Forest of Birse. Crathie Kirk to3417589jhp Crathie Kirk Church May Scotland spring morning daffodils colours sunshine closeup backlit Aberdeenshire located across from the main entrance to Balmoral Castle where it crosses from the North to the South Deeside Road. The Church is on the opposite side of the main road from the public carpark and Tourist Information centre and castle shop, perched on top of a small hill and looks across to its walled cemetery in which there is the burial site of John Brown of Queen Victoria fame. Crathie Church is famous as the Sunday worshipping Church for HM The Queen and various members of the Royal family during their annual holiday at Balmoral Castle and was the Church used by The Princess Royal for her second marriage. Turriff Deveron Bridge up714535jhp River Deveron Turriff autumn bridge trees framed leaves foliage backlit sunny in Banff and Buchan district with its elegant three span road bridge built in 1826 taking the B9025 to Banff and Aberchirder. Turriff is an ancient town mentioned in the 6th century with Pictish connections, with a later church built by the Knights Templar, as a main centre for the Covenanter Rebellion in 1639 and more recently conflict with Lloyd George’s National Health Insurance Scheme in 1913 and the creation of the Turra Coo. Today hosts one of the largest agricultural shows in Britain and remains a thriving farming town in the north of Aberdeenshire.
