Aberdeen Seaton Autumn 1919512jhp Aberdeen City Seaton Park autumn colours Wallace Tower path bench is a wide expanse of parkland lying between the University and River Don to the north of the City in the North East of Scotland. The offers walks and many areas to exercise and enjoy flower displays as well with easy access across the famous Brig O’Balgownie to Donside and the banks of the River Don as it flows eventually into the North Sea. Also in the park is the Wallace Tower, a partial replica of Benholm’s House or Lodging once situated in the Netherkirkgate but demolished in 1964. The present structure incorporates some of the original stonework from this unique z-plan towerhouse and one of the four remaining 16th Century buildings in the City. Later after the building of a bridge to give access to the New Castle built around the 1900’s by Colonel James Ogston, known in Aberdeen as ‘Soapy Ogston’ of the Aberdeen Soap Manufacturing company and with its close connections to two large hotels of to-day in the area-Norwood and Ardoe House, the gardens were further developed with a Japanese Water Garden and the addition of many new shrubs, trees and flowers. Under James Pearson Smith the modern gardens came under a Charitable Trust in 1968, giving public access in exchange for public donations and entry fee to help pay for the continuing running of the gardens. Overlooking the gardens are the ruins of the Castle and the New Castle, now the Kildrummy Castle Hotel. A small carpark is at the entrance to the road that crosses the bridge and access to the Hotel. The Castle is a Historic Scotland property with its roots set during the peak of medieval European castle construction during the early 13th century. Started by Alexander 11 and possibly later extended after a visit by Edward 1 of England in 1296. It survived many sieges, being burnt and later restored, before being largely dismantled after the Jacobite rising of 1715 when used as the headquarters for the Earl of Mar. It is a magnificent ruin and the scale of the thick walls is particularly impressive despite not being as well preserved as many similar English ruins. Banchory Dee Autumn 1919316jhp Banchory River Dee downstream autumn colours beech trees Deeside Scotland viewed from the road bridge entering the town from the south to this large Deeside town on the River Dee some 18 miles west of Aberdeen in North East Scotland. It has always been a main visitor centre either for day trippers from Aberdeen or the usual flow of coaches and other visitors heading from Aberdeen westwards to Braemar and from there south to Perth or north to Inverness. It is also offers a very scenic route southwards over the Cairn O’Mount to Mearns. Crathes Castle Autumn bnm5718jhp Crathes Castle Deeside autumn Scotland colourful water trees reflections Banchory at the entrance to the main drive of this historic property which building dates from the 16th century although the land belonged to the Burnett’s of Leys as a gift from Robert the Bruce in 1323. In the great hall is the Horn of Leys, supposedly a symbol of this grant. The tower house is one of the finest examples of the period and some of the original wall paintings still survive. There are extensive gardens including a walled garden and croquet lawn, with many activities for children, woodland walks, shop and restaurant. It is located on the Banks of the River Dee in the community of Crathie mid-way between the towns of Ballater and Braemar on the A93. Lochnagar, the fourth highest mountain in Britain lies to the south of the estate. The estate and building are private belonging to Her Majesty the Queen and although open to the public for certain times of the year are not public property. Falls Feugh Autumn SO20036jhp Scotland Autumn Falls River Feugh Banchory colours beech golden waterfall water rocks at famous Royal Deeside falls taken from footbridge near Banchory. This photo was taken in 2003 and was one of my early digital photographs using the Fuji S2Pro, a camera I had tested and decided to switch to fulltime giving up slide film. A recent upgrade of the public viewing footbridge by the old road bridge has had additional interest by the creation of a wooden sculpture created for the ‘selfies’ as an alternative to allowing padlocks to be attached to the wire screens which was becoming a safety hazard given the accumulated weight. The viewing area is very popular for watching the salmon leaping up the falls on their annual migration to the spawning beds in the burns that feed the Water of Feugh especially in the Forest of Birse. The bridge is cared for by Historic Scotland and is one of the many military bridges built after the Forty Five Rebellion and that carried troops across the Highlands. This was built by Major Caulfield 1752 although often called a General Wade bridge who had started the process making a military road system many years earlier. The bridge is located just east of Braemar and this view is from the northern river bank looking to the White Mounth. Located between the estates of Balmoral, south of the river and Invercauld to its north, this view is taken from the side of the North Deeside Road just beyond Invercauld House on the road to Braemar. Later in the 18th century the battlements and unusual star-shaped defensive curtain wall were added. It was forfeited to the crown after the 1715 rebellion and were later sold to the Farquharson’s of Invercauld and rented back to the Crown as a Hanoverian garrison post until 1831. It has a barrel vaulted ceilings, an iron yett, an open wrought iron metal grid, covering an underground dungeon with its bottle neck entrance. Since then it has been a private property until recently by Invercauld Estate and is now run as a tourist attraction by a local community trust after refurbishment with exhibitions reflecting its, and the local area history. As a private property now in the control of a local charity then these photographs should only be used for tourist/scenic/editorial purposes. The Castle is accessible for exterior viewing all year round with easy parking at nearby carpark but the interiors during summer months at weekends from 11-4 or by prior appointment. This was built by Major Caulfield 1752 although often called a General Wade bridge, the person who started the process many years earlier. The bridge is located just east of Braemar and this view is from eastern side of the bridge, looking upstream with the golden colours of autumn larch and silver birch.
