Standing 137m high, was 140m originally, was 230m on each size and probably was built using over 2 million blocks of stone averaging 2.5 tons although today it looks smaller than nearby Khafre Pyramid which higher on the Giza plateau. Photos is taken near the Funerary Temple of Khafre on the southern face of the Great Pyramid, a small figure walks just under the Solar barque or Boat Museum building on the left - the figure if transported to the top of the pyramid would probably not be visible. Left to right from this viewpoint there is the Great Pyramid of Khufu, the Turah limestone capped Khafre Pyramid and to the right the smaller of the three, that of Menkaure. These are taken from the roadside of the metalled road that runs through the Giza site from Giza up to the high ground to the south. It was taken using a Nikon FM manual camera, 28mm f2.8 Nikkor or Tokina SD 28-70mm f3.5lens with a Red filter, rated at 200ASA and processed in Aculux for 14 mins. Excellent views of the whole Karnak complex here from the Sun Chapel at Temple of Khonsu, set to the south-west of the Karnak complex and is worth a visit as it is usually free of crowds, is well preserved and is adjacent to a nicely decorated Temple of Opet, a Goddess hippopotamus deity who assisted women in childbearing. Tell Basta Southern Aspect EG077109JHP Tell Basta Bastet temple eastern aspect Hathor capital columns Egyptian Delta site is a large complex near the town of Zigazig north of Cairo which has recently had a new visitors centre and museum built but remains a rather confusing collection of damaged material with the main temple of Bastet reflected in this photographs. Damaged by earthquakes some 2000 years ago as is seen in much of the structural damage today it is still fascinating with the excitement of finding beautiful carvings and examples of the craftsmanship of those ancient builders now hidden away amongst grass and a scatter field of damaged remnants from what was a huge cult site to the Cat Goddess Bastet visited by hundreds and thousands of pilgrims as recorded by Herodotus. Not usually part of normal Egyptian packages but can be visited privately and is part of an interesting day journey that should include Tanis as well. Abu Ghurab Sun Temple EG02AA41jhp Egyptian Abu Ghurab Temple Niuserre Solar Obelisk base eastern aspect isolated location south of Giza, about 25km from Cairo and situated on the desert escarpment after travelling through rural roads and walking in agricultural land and then the sand. Originally thought to be a pyramid, called Riga but now known to be the Sun-Temple of Nyusere c2453-2422 built on an east-west access and although a very elaborate miniature pyramid complex is now very ruined and is thought to be the only one of six standing that were built in the area. Large alabaster bowls of considerable beauty remain from the slaughterhouse where animals would have been sacrificed for the Heb Sed and in similar stone, a huge four-sided Hetep Altar stone remains intact in front of the base of where a large Solar Obelisk would have stood. 2km away is the site of Abusir whose remaining pyramids can be seen across the desert to the south. Egypt > River Nile Cruise & Sites (open collection)

Photographs in this gallery show daily life along the River Nile mainly from the cruises I have undertaken over the past 10 years or so. Sites that border the Nile are included although the major temples visted have their own dedicated sites such as Edfu and Kom Ombo. One of the enjoyments of the Nile cruise is the tranquility of watching 'life go by' usually characterised by the friendliness of those you pass whether boatmen or farm workers as well as seeing wild birds close at hand. The other aspect is the service on the cruiseboats from friendly crews and the chance to relax after hectic and often crowded temple visits.

Construction is with small bricks of fine white limestone giving this huge building a very delicate structure and aesthetic appearance. Still one of the highlights of any visit to Egypt, despite the wealth of fantastic places to see, and for me best enjoyed towards the evening when the site is often quiet and the face of the pyramid from the colonnade entrance is bathed in soft golden light. Dunnideer Castle Insch VQ9064JHP Dunnideer Hillfort Framed Larch Tree Railway Line Southern Aspect Insch Road is a prehistoric site but the remains now visible were one of the oldest stone castles in Scotland, built around 1260. Situated on one of two hills both of which show evidence of early use as fortified strongholds, they are near Insch in Aberdeenshire. It is accessed by a steep but short climb from a minor road to Clashindarroch Forest and there is a small signed carpark area. Kildrummy Castle UP481680JHP Kildrummy Castle Gardens Carpark Grinding Wheel Foreground Eastern Aspect Outer Wall of ruin in western Aberdeenshire near Alford is a Historic Scotland property with its roots set during the peak of medieval European castle construction during the early 13th century. Started by Alexander 11 and possibly later extended after a visit by Edward 1 of England in 1296. It survived many sieges, being burnt and later restored, before being largely dismantled after the Jacobite rising of 1715 when used as the headquarters for the Earl of Mar. It is a magnificent ruin and the scale of the thick walls is particularly impressive despite not being as well preserved as many similar English ruins. As this is a Historic Scotland property the photograph should be used for editorial, scenic or tourist related use. The castle carpark and entrance is a few hundred yards to the west of the Hotel entrance. It is open for most of the summer and requires and entrance fee to be paid. Corgarff Castle Scotland VS2674JHP Corgarff Scottish Fortress Castle Southern Aspect Approach Cockbridge Hills Telephoto View where it is located just off off the A939 Ballater/Tomintoul road with a commanding position over this strategically important route to the north. The core tower was built in 1537 and the most striking star-shaped curtain wall dates from 1748 when occupied by the Hanoverian troops tracking down Jacobite rebels. Its final historical importance was during the anti-whisky smuggling duties around the late 1820. Now restored and with interesting exhibits from those last days of occupation. As this is a Historic Scotland property the photograph should be used for editorial, scenic or tourist related use. The castle carpark is at the bottom of steepish hill with a walk of several hundred yards from the entrance and ticket office situated in the castle itself. It is open for most of the summer and requires an entrance fee to be paid. This building dates from between 1575 and 1636 is the “most elaborate z-plan castle†in existence in Scotland today and was the work of two master masons or builders called Bell and Leiper. It is located on the Banks of the River Dee in the community of Crathie mid-way between the towns of Ballater and Braemar on the A93. Lochnagar, the fourth highest mountain in Britain lies to the south of the estate. The estate and building are private belonging to Her Majesty The Queen and although open to the public for certain times of the year are not public property. Photographs taken in the mid 90's mainly for the AA Publishing & Ordnance Survey Highland and Islands Guide book using transparency film covering the Highlands of Scotland from Inverness, northwards through Easter Ross to Wick and Thurso, along the Northern Coast, down the West Coast, including the Islands of Skye and Mull. Other material included was gathered for other AA Publishing Guides including Shetland, Pitlochry and Tayside. New photographs are now included from 2012 book commission travels in Angus, Perth, Kinross, Trossachs and Tayside.

Dunkeld was badly damaged during the Battle of Dunkeld in 1689 was later rebuilt in the 18th Century in a much ‘planned’ style of which this Saltire Award winning restoration by the National Trust for Scotland illustrates in this street near the Cathedral. The location has a chequered and sometime violent history certainly recorded back to Pictish times around 820AD and long association with Christianity since its fledging beginnings in Scotland. Any location by a river lying in the lee of surrounding hills probably attracted habitation even in prehistoric times. It is very busy attractive town for visitors, extremely so during summer weekends, and lies conveniently close to the A9 route between Perth and northwards via Pitlochry into the Highlands.
