The photo is by the main entrance North Propylon gate alonside which is a small open air museum of various artefacts found on site including this carved face of Hathor in its bovine style although in 2007 it no longer resided there. It is the visitors’ first site of major impact, not far from the main ticket office but is usually visited as a photo opportunity on leaving - recent excavations of the site are finding many hidden buildings and artefacts. This particular photograph was taken using Kodak Infra Red film which gives this classic ghostly affect. The garden area of this site has many exhibits including sarcophagi, carved capitals as well as a reconstructed Tombs, this one is known as Tigrane [Tigran] rescued from construction work in Tigrane Pasha Street in 1952. The style of decoration in this tomb is particularly important as it shows the blending of the major influences in the City’s history-Egyptian, Greek and Roman. The City has a distinctly European rather than Egyptian feel to it; it is sometimes offered as a day trip on a Cairo package but is seldom part of the main Nile packages. I hired my own taxi and the driver was sufficiently knowledgeable to take me to the main ‘ancient’ sites I could manage in a few hours. Alexandria Burial Vault eg961393jhp Egypt Alexandria city main catacombs tomb entrance carved walls Kom al-Shawqaiah catacombs Mediterranean is no longer reminiscent of the ancient city from Pharaonic times and little of that ancient time remains. A few isolated sites can be visited and this is called Kom es-Shogafa, also spelt es-Shoquafa, al-Shawqaiah a necropolis of catacombs and ongoing archaeology. The garden area of this site has many exhibits including sarcophagi, carved capitals as well as a reconstructed Tombs, best known is Tigrane [Tigran] rescued from construction work in Tigrane Pasha Street in 1952. The style of decoration in this tomb is particularly important as it shows the blending of the major influences in the City’s history-Egyptian, Greek and Roman. The City has a distinctly European rather than Egyptian feel to it; it is sometimes offered as a day trip on a Cairo package but is seldom part of the main Nile packages. I hired my own taxi and the driver was sufficiently knowledgeable to take me to the main ‘ancient’ sites I could manage in a few hours. This gallery contains pictures of the two main sites usually visited together on a day trip south of Cairo - Saqqara with the famous Step Pyramid, a huge necropolis with many tombs and other pyramids and Memphis, the ancient capital of Egypt now will an open air museum with the alabaster sphinx and the huge partial statue of Ramasses 11.
Saqqara Tomb of Nefermerry 6885EG07JHP Tomb Nefermerry Rock Cut Bedrock Near Causeway Unas Saqqara Egypt and the mastaba tomb at the gate. The Step Pyramid of King Djoser is visible from here and this is just another example of many such artefacts to see on this huge sprawling necropolis to the south of Cairo. The causeway has been substantially restored and has several fascinating carved reliefs of ancient Egyptian fish from the Nile and other animals that existed at the time. Advised by my custodian guide this was the Tomb of Nefermerry but I have been unable to find any support for this in guide or reference books and the only Google result is my own site - scary. Taken from them in 1314 by the Hays of Delgatie after the Battle of Bannockburn it was rebuilt around 1570. A major feature is the turnpike staircase with the widest span in Scotland. It has many historical artefacts and works of art and colourful painted ceilings dating to the mid 1590’s.
