Images of two important sites north of Luxor near the River Nile but usually visted as an extra tour either by road or a day cruise.
Dendara Desecration eg075523jhp Dendara Temple exterior Egypt erosion damage stone desecration sharpening weapons soldiers swords photograph is located north of Luxor and survives as one of the finest examples of the Late Period and the main buildings visited today date from fourth century BC in to the Roman period. It has a notable rare representation of the famous Cleopatra, some beautiful carvings and is relatively unscathed by the ravages of time, desecration and being dismantled for building materials. This photo is of a block of limestone possibly showing repeated sharpening of a sword, knife or bayonet by passing armies such as the mamluks during the Ottoman Empire in the 1800's. Another suggestion is faulty stone showing aggressive erosion. Karanis Old British Army HQ 6427EG07JHP Karanis Kom Aushim British Army HQ Desert Base Egypt Derelict was an ancient city on the north eastern edge of the area known as Fayoum and dates from Ptolemaic times through to 500AD. Two Roman dated temples survive in reasonable state and the southern one is dedicated to the crocodile Gods of Pnepheros and Petesuchos. Many finds have been made especially of life in a residential area with houses scattered throughout the site and there is also a fine Roman bathhouse. A small museum now closed has been replaced with an open air area with a selection of artefacts adjacent to the main walk to the temples and illustrated in this photo is th remains of an old WW2 British army HQ. The town has always been a main visitor centre either for day trippers from Aberdeen or the usual flow of coaches and other visitors heading from Aberdeen westwards along Royal Deeside to Braemar and from there south to Perth or north to Inverness. It is also offers a very scenic route southwards over the Cairn O’Mount to Mearns. The river is a famous salmon fishing water which flows from the Cairngorms eastwards into the North Sea at Aberdeen. A colourful summer display and memorial Park is passed on the left hand side after leaving the town centre, it is adjacent to the start of the Golf Course and to the south is the distinct hilline of Scolty Hill with its Memorial Tower. The Glen O’Dee was sadly burnt to the ground in 2016 owing to an act of arson by teenagers. It is promised by the current owners/developers that this beautiful building would be restored. It was to have been converted into flats having fallen into disuse as a hospital given the costs of maintenance, H&S, Fire Regulations and of course the eradication of TB generally by modern medical advances. At the time of the fire it was in a very sorry state of disrepair. Originally opened in 1900 by Dr Lawson of Banchory as one of the earliest commercial sanatorium’s and with a design based on a German model, with a central granite tower, but mainly wooden construction with all rooms facing south for the sun while at the rear were the corridors and service rooms. It treated TB patients, including w. Somerset Maugham, based upon the pine forest air and plenty of sunshine idea. It closed in 1928, was later a luxury hotel, commandeered by the Army during WW2, in 1948 the Red Cross used it for treatment of ex-servicemen and women with TB, had a short-lived revival during the 60’s Typhoid outbreak in Aberdeen and in 1955 became a convalescent home under the new NHS until it closed in 1998 when a hospital facility in modern purpose buildings was constructed. Tradition claims is was the site claimed by Shakespeare in his play Macbeth where the King of the same name met the three Witches. It is identified on Ordnance Survey maps as Macbeth’s Hillock. Nearby Brodie Castle which lies between Forres and Nairn in Morayshire Scottish Highlands is home of the Brodie family, the castle perhaps dates back as far as 1160 and came under attack from Montrose’s army but survived. Many additions were made subsequently and the collections of various items are extensive and of high quality. This became a National Trust for Scotland property in 1980 and is situated about 4.5 miles west of Forres and the grounds are open to the public all the year round. Auldearn Doocot Spring UP280346jhp Scotland Nairnshire Moray Auldearn Doocot Dovecot pigeon loft spring yellow daffodils is situated in the village of Auldearn by the A96 near Nairn. The 17th Century Doocot or pigeon loft was bequeathed to the NTS by the owner Boath and is located on a motte, the site of a 12th century Royal Castle called Eren, one of the strongholds for the Scottish Kings of Moray. It was later destroyed but the site was the credited as where the Royal Standard was raised by the Marquis of Montrose in May 1645 when his army defeated the Covenant forces at the Battle of Auldearn. Land Army Memo bnm9965jhp Woman’s Land Army Memorial Clochan village Buckie snow sea winter Moray Firth Fochabers Crown Estate is situated just to the east of the village of Clochan, near Buckie, off the B9016 road from near Keith to Buckie on the North east Coast of Morayshire. The Memorial was the first and is still the only one dedicated to the Women’s Land Army which was formed in 1917 and continued on with even greater importance during WW2. This interesting and eye catching sculpture is the work of the Artist Peter Naylor and unveiled in 2012 by HRH Prince of Wales. This was the first snowfall on November 2017 and possibly showing some signs of weathering with its russet rust colour. From the site on the Fochabers Crown Estate it is possible to see the sea and across the Moray Firth to the distance mountains and hills of Easter Ross, Cromarty and the Black Isle. Photographs taken in the mid 90's mainly for the AA Publishing & Ordnance Survey Highland and Islands Guide book using transparency film covering the Highlands of Scotland from Inverness, northwards through Easter Ross to Wick and Thurso, along the Northern Coast, down the West Coast, including the Islands of Skye and Mull. Other material included was gathered for other AA Publishing Guides including Shetland, Pitlochry and Tayside. New photographs are now included from 2012 book commission travels in Angus, Perth, Kinross, Trossachs and Tayside.
Culloden Memorial 126314JHP Culloden Battlefield Scottish Highlands East Inverness Memorial stone commemoration killed on the B9006 is a National Trust for Scotland property with modern visitors centre offering interactive detailed information about this historic site of the last bloody battle to be fought on British soil. The grave stones of the Scottish clansmen who died in 1746 when the Jacobite army clashed with the Government forces can be seen as well as this is memorial to all those who died.
