Aswan Egyptian Nubian Museum bowls with hunting scenes, wild animals and hunters from the 6th Dysnasty and found at Qubbet el Hawa on display in this modern air-conditioned building whose foundations were laid in 1986, opened in 1997 and organised through UNESCO. Very low artificial light makes general photography difficult as well as affecting accurate colour balance. This now appears to be the only museum in Egypt where photography is still allowed although it is not easy as the ambient lighting is extremely subdued for conservation reasons.

Kom Ombo museum blocks Egyptian hieroglyphs beautiful iconic symbols carvings of this beautiful ruined temple just north of Aswan and a regular visit on all Nile Cruises, was principally built by Ptolemy V of Silsilah sandstone. Dedicated to two Gods – Sobek, the crocodile and Horus, the falcon and although it has been damaged over the years, mainly through slipping into the River Nile and some structural damage owing to earthquakes, there are still some wonderful colourful reliefs of the most detailed and delicate style. This trip was special for me in that I got special permission to climb up the back of the temple on the hill behind and match a view I had on a Victorian albumen print; the local Police Chief had to be involved and thanks to a good Kuoni Guide he agreed for me to be accompanied by a policemen as security was still a big thing after the 1997 attacks at Luxor. Unfortunately in the excitement I had forgot to adjust my ASA rating for Velvia and took the photos based on 400ASA-the film maws later pushed to 200asa so there is some increase in grain structure, not a feature of Velvia generally. On this visit some cleaning and restoration was being done to the many painted bas reliefs on the columns-hence the scaffolding and the sun umbrella but the bonus was the reliefs looked particularly vibrant. The time of day also meant some of the museum blocks with deep cut carvings were ideal to photograph as the shadows gave greater emphasis to the excellent cut marks of some iconic hieroglyphic symbols.

Egypt Museum Luxor Inside Exhibit Photo Slab Fish Christian Motif was taken inside this modern building on the waterfront of the River Nile with its fascinating collection covering the extensive history of ancient Egypt including items from the Tomb of Tutankahum. This particular exhibit of sandstone an example of early Christian Coptic Art maybe 6th Century AD is in the museum proper and was taken in 1996 when you could pay to take photographs but not use a tripod, now not allowed at all, and I used Kodak 5042 Tungsten Slide film which still meant hand holding was at the extremes of useful photography in low light conditions.

Beni Hasan Egypt resthouse tickets dog fields farming modern oleander flowers arrival at this site offering thirty nine tombs along the face of a bluff above the River Nile some 20km south of Minya make Bani Hasan a special visiting place for its decorations along the themes of wrestling, battle scenes and the collection of taxes by the nomarchs of the Oryx Nome give some beautiful tomb paintings to view - unfortunately photography inside the tombs was absolutely refused when I visited. Egypt el-Lisht Pyramid Senusret painted releif workers farmers animals limestone Middle Kingdom site which also has the slightly better preserved tomb of Amenemhet 1 nearby. Access to Senusret’s pyramid is through a local village and agricultural land at the edge of the desert escarpment as is common with most of the pyramid sites south of Giza. I remember passing a very well kept football pitch. A local custodian took me around and also allowed me to take flash photographs of some coloured reliefs on limestone blocks under a roofed area. The pyramid has almost totally collapsed into a huge sandy mound but there were still one section of limestone casing intact and not plundered and around the site were hints at its previous enclosure wall structure with large sections of eroded limestone sticking out of the sand like a whales skeleton. The burial chamber thought to have been robbed shortly after his death is under the ground water table and is inaccessible. The site dates back to the Middle Kingdom-Senusret’a reign was 1971-1926BC and he was the son of Amenemhet 1 building his pyramid near his fathers. There is evidence of nine subsidiary pyramids for royal ladies and mastaba tombs around the site including those of Vizier Mentuhotep, Senwosret-ankh.

Lisht village Egyptian life camels transporting palm fronds street scene was spotted driving through the village enroute to the two Lisht pyramids of Amenemhet and Senwsoret on the desert escarpment south of a trip from visiting the Dashur necropolis. Definitely need a great taxi driver who can navigate his way to these outlying sites, finding the local custodian and also managing not to get bogged down in the sand once away from the plantations.

Egypt Red North Pyramid Sneferu Dashur east side wild dog Old Kingdom construction following the problems with his Meidum and Bent pyramids this appears to have been a well executed building programme with a successful outcome, the tallest of the Dashur pyramids and although robbed of all its limestone casing is considered the first of the ‘true’ pyramids to have been completed. Pieces of the pyramid’s capstone have been reconstructed and form a feature in what remains of the foundations of the Mortuary Temple on the east side.

Ancient Egypt Fayyum Hawara Pyramid North East Face View Necropolis Wild Dog appears scavenging amongst the ruins adjacent to the Necropolis, a collection of tombs and temples of nobles associated with royalty. The site is near Faiyum, to the south of Cairo was the last pyramid built in the 12th Dynasty by the Pharaoh Amenemhet 111 of the later design using mudbrick core with limestone covering, now all missing. Most famous for the references to the Labyrinth; a comparison of its mortuary and temple complex to that at Knossos by Herodotus although little now remains new excavations are underway to determine what might still exist. This pyramid was built after the kingâ€™s first attempt at Dashur was abandoned owing to subsidence problems.

Photographs in this gallery show daily life along the River Nile mainly from the cruises I have undertaken over the past 10 years or so. Sites that border the Nile are included although the major temples visted have their own dedicated sites such as Edfu and Kom Ombo. One of the enjoyments of the Nile cruise is the tranquility of watching 'life go by' usually characterised by the friendliness of those you pass whether boatmen or farm workers as well as seeing wild birds close at hand. The other aspect is the service on the cruiseboats from friendly crews and the chance to relax after hectic and often crowded temple visits.

Saqqarah Unis Causeway carvings reliefs wild life antelope Egyptian limestone animals that once decorated and fragments have been built into the restored walkway from the Pyramid of Unas near the Step Pyramid and which slopes down to the Valley Temple first seen as visitors arrive at this major complex near Memphis. Recent archaeological work has discovered tombs underneath the causeway such as that of the Two Brothers while many other undiscovered or partially excavated ones lie alongside the causeway as do boat pits.

Tomb Nefermerry Rock Cut Bedrock Near Causeway Unas Saqqara Egypt and the mastaba tomb at the gate. The Step Pyramid of King Djoser is visible from here and this is just another example of many such artefacts to see on this huge sprawling necropolis to the south of Cairo. The causeway has been substantially restored and has several fascinating carved reliefs of ancient Egyptian fish from the Nile and other animals that existed at the time. Advised by my custodian guide this was the Tomb of Nefermerry but I have been unable to find any support for this in guide or reference books and the only Google result is my own site - scary.

Helicopter Spraying Flying Clear Felled Forest Bracken Roe Deer Watching Weedkilling prior to replanting on Ord Fundlie near Kincardine O Neil on Royal Deeside in North East Scotland and in this case watched by two roedeer. Unfortunately after this was sprayed a few hours later there was a July thunderstorm and the whole area was deluged in torrential rain for 30 mins; timing is everything.
