Visits to the Tomb- chapels are usually privately organised but easily made via the southern public ferry from the eastbank although there is steep climb from the shore to the rock cut tombs of Ancient Egyptian Nobles and Governors. These felucca sailing boats are berthered around one of the small reed covered islands in the Nile near the northern entrance to Aswan with an old abandoned ferryboat rotting in the background. Nile Cruise InfR EG021229jhp Egypt River Nile Cruiseboat Romance berth riverbank infra red film ghostly on the journey from Luxor to Aswan anchored at Esna before this stretch to Edfu by cruiseboat offers a peaceful way albeit a busy one these days to see modern day Egyptian life that occurs along the banks of this historic major African river and which still plays an important part in the wealth of Egypt and in the lives of ordinary Egyptians today just as it has over the past 5000 years or so. This photo was taken in 1998 on a Stars and Signs cruise and will not represent the current situation with a huge drop in tourist numbers because of the Arab Spring and its aftermath. This particular photograph was taken using Kodak Infra Red film which gives this classic ghostly affect. It was taken using a Nikon FM manual camera, 28mm f2.8 Nikkor or Tokina SD 28-70mm f3.5lens with a Red filter, rated at 200ASA and processed in Aculux for 14 mins. In both cases the approach is by motorboat being located on an island which is impressive with the pylon facing the landing berth and a large flight of steps. On the left is a small Roman kiosk called Qertassi dedicated to the Goddess Hathor and at the rear of the main temple is a small temple from Ramasses 11 period carved out of a rock face although again relocated from near the original site of Kalabsha, some 40 km upstream on the banks of the original River Nile. All these three sites would have been flooded following the creation of Lake Nasser after construction of the Aswan High Dam in the 1960’s. In this first visit in 2000, the arrival was from the Nile cruiseboat and they anchored along the rocky shore rather than the main stepped landing. The sandstone temple to Amun-Re and Re-Harakhte was built by Thutmosis 111, Amenhotep 11 and Tuthmosis 1V. One of several small antiquities visited during a Lake Nasser cruise it has some coloured wall reliefs still intact and is then fallowed after a short walk to the Rock Cut Temple of al-Derr. The road bridge over the Nile slightly to the south of the town was opened in 1998 and then all journeys to the West Bank sites was done by coach and much less romantic than crossing the Nile by ferry boat. It is still possible to use the public ferry and then get a taxi from the ticket office near Qurna al-Gaddah. In 1994 on my first trip I stayed in the Etap Hotel now the Mercure and it was a great location on the promenade, great views over the River with easy access by foot to the Luxor Museum, to public ferry points for crossing the Nile and to nearby shops or just enjoyed a leisurely walk along the tree lined waterfront by the berthed cruiseboats and feluccas. You could see the Temple of Hatshepsut tucked into the Theban hills, watch the balloons starting their early morning flights or see feluccas and cruiseboats sailing along the Nile. In my first few visits to Egypt but especially my first the Nile cruiseboat the RA 11 anchored adjacent to the main promenade and we were collected in the morning by ferryboats and taken over the river to the East Boat and brought back after our visits to the West Bank sites. Coaches were waiting on the West Bank to take us to the sites. You could see the Temple of Hatshepsut tucked into the Theban hills, watch the balloons starting their early morning flights or see feluccas and cruiseboats sailing along the Nile. In my first few visits to Egypt but especially my first the Nile cruiseboat the RA 11 anchored adjacent to the main promenade and we were collected in the morning by ferryboats and taken over the river to the East Boat and brought back after our visits to the West Bank sites. Coaches were waiting on the West Bank to take us to the sites. Photographs in this gallery show daily life along the River Nile mainly from the cruises I have undertaken over the past 10 years or so. Sites that border the Nile are included although the major temples visted have their own dedicated sites such as Edfu and Kom Ombo. One of the enjoyments of the Nile cruise is the tranquility of watching 'life go by' usually characterised by the friendliness of those you pass whether boatmen or farm workers as well as seeing wild birds close at hand. The other aspect is the service on the cruiseboats from friendly crews and the chance to relax after hectic and often crowded temple visits.
