Royalty Free photos of exhibits from the Cairo Egyptian Museum taken before current bans with slide film in available light not to studio quality
Queen Merit-Amun Bust EG11811JHP Egypt Cairo Museum Exhibit bust Queen Merit-Amun Ramasseum Rameses 11 in the prime antiquities collection in Cairo taken during visits between 1994 and 1996 when photography was allowed albeit without flash and tripod. None is of studio quality, being handheld with existing, usually extremely poor light and using slide film, pushed Fuji 400asa to get a suitable aperture and shutter speed. Most of the photos are from the Tutankahum exhibits while the rest are items that interested me as I explored this wonderful and extensive collection, requiring many more hours if not days and is only hinted at during the usual one or two hour visit made on a package tour. The in fill from many Atenist temples has been removed particularly from the inside of the ninth pylon and much of the area around the eighth to tenth pylons is largely covered in various blocks of variously decorated stone all eventually waiting new homes in restored chapels such as that of Hatshepsut's Chapelle Rouge in the Open Air Museum. This photo is situated near the sixth pylon on the outer wall of the inner sanctum around various chapels and shrines attributed to Amenhotep, Hatshepsut and Thutmose leading to the central court area, now a large open space facing the Festival Hall of Thutmose 111. The sandstone temple to Amun-Re and Re-Harakhte was built by Thutmosis 111, Amenhotep 11 and Tuthmosis 1V. One of several small antiquities visited during a Lake Nasser cruise it has some coloured wall reliefs still intact and is then fallowed after a short walk to the Rock Cut Temple of al-Derr. Luxor Deir al-Madinah Amun Temple 5144EG07JHP Temple Amun Deir al-Madinah Ancient Egypt Ruin Opposite Hathor Temple Entrance is located on the West Bank of the River Nile at Luxor lies to the west of Qurnet Murai hill and is the location of a workman's village with the remains of houses, streets, temples and chapels. The workers are known for their work in the Valley tombs which they reached walking over the Theban plateau. The photograph is of the Amun Temple on the lower slopes of the Qurnet Murai hill and across the track from the Ptolemaic Temple to Hathor. Luxor Yamu-Nedjeh EG962096JHP Egypt Museum Luxor Egyptian Library Photos Yamu Nedjeh Herald Granite was taken inside this modern building on the waterfront of the River Nile with its fascinating collection covering the extensive history of ancient Egypt including items from the Tomb of Tutankahum. This particular exhibit is of Tuthmosis 111 First Herald an official of great status and trust who was allowed to have this carved block in his own tomb at Qurna and it is now in the museum proper and was taken in 1996 when you could pay to take photographs but not use a tripod, now not allowed at all, and I used Kodak 5042 Tungsten Slide film which still meant hand holding was at the extremes of useful photography in low light conditions. Tell Basta Meryetamun EG077138JHP Tell Basta statue Meryetamun daughter Ramses photo Egypt Delta site at Bubastis a large complex near the town of Zagazig north of Cairo which has recently had a new visitors centre and museum built of which this huge statue is a centrepiece and is suggested to be Ramses daughter Meryetamun but might be his wife Nerfertari but overall the site remains a rather confusing collection of damaged material with the main temple of Bastet reflected in this photographs. Damaged by earthquakes some 2000 years ago as is seen in much of the structural damage today it is still fascinating with the excitement of finding beautiful carvings and examples of the craftsmanship of those ancient builders now hidden away amongst grass and a scatter field of damaged remnants from what was a huge cult site to the Cat Goddess Bastet visited by hundreds and thousands of pilgrims as recorded by Herodotus. Not usually part of normal Egyptian packages but can be visited privately and is part of an interesting day journey that should include Tanis as well. Photographs taken in the mid 90's mainly for the AA Publishing & Ordnance Survey Highland and Islands Guide book using transparency film covering the Highlands of Scotland from Inverness, northwards through Easter Ross to Wick and Thurso, along the Northern Coast, down the West Coast, including the Islands of Skye and Mull. Other material included was gathered for other AA Publishing Guides including Shetland, Pitlochry and Tayside. New photographs are now included from 2012 book commission travels in Angus, Perth, Kinross, Trossachs and Tayside.
