Royalty Free photos of exhibits from the Cairo Egyptian Museum taken before current bans with slide film in available light not to studio quality
Pyramidion Amenemhat EG11812JHP Egyptian Museum Cairo hall basalt polished pyramidion Pharaoh Amenemhat 111 from the top of his mudbrick pyramid at Hawara dating from around 1800 DC. In the prime antiquities collection in Cairo taken during visits between 1994 and 1996 when photography was allowed albeit without flash and tripod. None is of studio quality, being handheld with existing, usually extremely poor light and using slide film, pushed Fuji 400asa to get a suitable aperture and shutter speed. Most of the photos are from the Tutankahum exhibits while the rest are items that interested me as I explored this wonderful and extensive collection, requiring many more hours if not days and is only hinted at during the usual one or two hour visit made on a package tour. Lake Qarum al-Fayyum eg947034jhp Egypt el-Fayoum Lake Qarun Moeris peaceful quiet lakeshore restaurant was a peaceful coffee stop during hectic visit to The Fayyum [Crocodilopolis Nome] province of Egypt south of Cairo which included visits to Meydum and Hawara pyramids, the waterwheels of Madinat al-Fayyum Town, Lake Qarun and then returning to Cairo via Karanis. Many years later I returned to the Lake and stayed at the historic Auberge Helnan Hotel on its shores before a journey across the desert to Soknopaiou Nesos [Dimyah-al-Siba] and Qasr al-Saghah Temple. The Lake has a long history from Neolithic times but major development started under Amenemhat 1 in the 12th Dynasty with water management and drainage schemes. Very productive area for various crops, wildfowl and fish with increase development during the Ptolemaic and Roman times as it is still to modern days. The burial chamber thought to have been robbed shortly after his death is under the ground water table and is inaccessible. The site dates back to the Middle Kingdom-Senusret’a reign was 1971-1926BC and he was the son of Amenemhet 1 building his pyramid near his fathers. Hawara Shaft Tomb eg941415jhp Ancient Egyptian Hawara Pyramid Fayyum Amenemhet royal tomb shafts oblong deep, at a site well to the south of Cairo was the last pyramid built in the 12th Dynasty by the Pharaoh Amenemhet 111 of the later design using mudbrick core with limestone covering, now all missing. Most famous for the references to the Labyrinth; a comparison of its mortuary and temple complex to that at Knossos by Herodotus although little now remains new excavations are underway to determine what might still exist. This pyramid was built after the king’s first attempt at Dashur was abandoned owing to subsidence problems. The tomb shafts adjacent to the entrance road our well constructed with smooth well finished walls and could have been for royal women rather as in Lisht and I understood from my guide that many items found were displayed in the small musuem at Karanis which has been closed since I visited it 1994. It is the most complete pyramid with most of its Tura limestone cladding intact, although some corners and near the top have been plundered but offer a good indicator of how the Giza pyramids would have looked when completed. Near the pyramid on its south side is a subsidiary one, badly degraded, which was found to have not been used and is felt to be too small for the King’s Queen Hetepheres. When I visited the site in 1995, the same year the military allowed tourist visits, the north entrance, there are two, was reached by climbing up the outside of the structure assisted by the helpful guide but I was unable to reach the burial chamber as I did not trust the rope ladder available. Nearby are several other pyramids of which the North or Red Pyramid also of Sneferu [Old Kingdom, 4th Dynasty c2613-2494BC] is the older, largest and most intact.
