This was the best of seven nights in a row of displays during one of the most active phases of the 90’s Solar Cycle. This photo was scanned from a 35mm colour slide film, Fuji RDP pushed processed for a 1600asa rating using a Nikon FM2, 28mm f2.8 lens wide open at around 20 seconds. What was unusual about this display was the very distinct folding of the arc giving a distinct curtain effect from the many moving rays, the green colours being from low altitude oxygen ionisation around 20.00hrs GMT. The Star Constellation Cassiopeia is an ideal spring marker for the northern sky and likely area for Aurora displays- the autumn winter star marker is The Plough or Ursa Major. These iridescent clouds are high altitude cirriform lenticular polar stratospheric, type 11 events, a rare winter sighting caused by twilight sunlight diffracted off ice crystals or water droplets with nitric or sulphuric acid content; sometimes called Mother of Pearl clouds because of the nature of the colour effect. This photograph was taken with a Nikon D700 full frame DSLR using a 28-300mm AF-S Nikkor ED zoom lens at f11 aperture, 28mm focal length, 1600 ISO with exposure of 1/13th second. Summer Clouds xcv9630jhp Clouds summer shapes white blue sky cumulonimbus cumulus Scottish weather and although not perhaps calendar material are none the less great photography subjects. Their shapes, size and often awesome sense of power make them a subject I enjoy photographing and are a truer reflection perhaps of the great mix of weather and light we have in the North East of Scotland. These clouds taken over the Hill of Fare near Torphins were a morning display which eventually developed into rain clouds which gave a beautiful double rainbow in the late afternoon examples of which precede these photos.
