Karnak Montu Temple EG0214009jhp Temple Montu precinct propylon Karnak Egypt gate Amenhotep Ptolemy which is located inside the north enclosure wall of the Karnak Complex at Luxor on the East Bank of the River Nile. Accessed near the delightful small Temple pf Ptah on the North Enclosure of Karnak and as very seldom frequented so always quiet although an extra ‘entry’ fee maybe required to keep the local custodians happy. On the day I visited we had very poor light conditions caused by an encroaching sand storm and it was very overcast and it was the only time I have been offered the chance to see this site and was not allowed to explore it. The Ptolemlaic Propylon is visible behind the palm tree on the left and the older main temple of Amenhotep 11 is on the right. Images in this gallery cover modern Luxor, general agriculture and photos not specific to other groups such as the recent excavations of the Sphinx Avenue, the alabaster factory and workers and the residential houses bordering the various roads to the main sites. It also includes the balloon flights and views from the balloon.
Luxor West Bank EG947629jhp Luxor Nile Balloons flight soaring Western desert landing hills Egypt after passing the several famous temples situated on the West Bank location of the Nile at Luxor. Apart from the main sites visited, in this general area are several Tombs of the Nobles which are usually privately organised visits but very well worth the time if you have a few days to spare in Luxor. The balloon flight illustrated here was in 1994 and there were only two although in later years these increased greatly in numbers. This trip took off from the front of Hatshepsut just after dawn, a cold and interesting crossing of the Nile in the dark and long before the modern road bridge and eventually landed in the desert where the Hilton Hotel put on a beautiful breakfast buffet. I understand in recent times the breakfast has come to a boxed meal probably eaten on the bus journey back to the hotel or cruiseboat. Through the work of the SCA the old houses of this area are being demolished and the modern occupants are be rehoused on new houses. After the removal of most of the houses an extensive exploration and survey of the area amongst the Tombs of the Nobles will be undertaken to identify any unidentified tombs while the various entrances to the existing tombs are being refurbished to make the area more accessible to visitors. Some of the better houses will be retained as part of a UNESCO sponsored museum as part of the history and occupation of the West Bank. Deir el-Medina EG075133jhp Deir ae-Medina Luxor Ancient Egypt great pit northwards Sheikh Abd'el-Qurna hill is located on the West Bank of the River Nile at Luxor lies to the west of Qurnet Murai hill where this photo was taken by the Temple to Amun looking northwards to the Skeikh Abd'el-Qurna hill with the Great Pit in the foreground. The whole of this site is the location of a workman's village with the remains of houses, streets, temples and chapels. The workers are known for their work in the Valley tombs which they reached walking over the Theban plateau. Most photographs show the streets, houses, interior with domestic bowls and grinding querns and others a general overview of the village with its tombs and rock tombs to the North West corner. There are also some exquisitely decorated underground tombs of which a couple are included in the entrance ticket. Ramose Tomb-Chapel in the Lower Enclosure [Tomb 55] was a Vizier and Governor towards the end of the reign of Amenhotep 111 and beginning of the Amarna period of Akhenaten and this is reflected in the change of style of the reliefs in his tomb. This was the first Tomb of the Nobles I visited in 1994 and I have noticed a fading of the coloured funerary procession frieze in the top left-hand corner since then. The area around the Tombs, especially the approach to Ramose, has now been greatly improved with removal of many of the old modern houses and entry to these fascinating burial sites made more accessible. The Menna Tomb-Chapel is cruciform in design located in the Upper Enclosure [Tomb 69] was a Scribe of the Royal Fields during the reign of Thutmosis 1V around 1400BC. This was one of the first Tomb of the Nobles I visited in 1994 and was taken by the colourful painted reliefs, difficult to photograph as protected by Perspex sheeting and only lit by reflected light done by the custodians. Ramose Tomb-Chapel in the Lower Enclosure [Tomb 55] was a Vizier and Governor towards the end of the reign of Amenhotep 111 and beginning of the Amarna period of Akhenaten and this is reflected in the change of style of the reliefs in his tomb. This was the first Tomb of the Nobles I visited in 1994 and I have noticed a fading of the coloured funerary procession frieze in the top left-hand corner since then. The area around the Tombs, especially the approach to Ramose, has now been greatly improved with removal of many of the old modern houses and entry to these fascinating burial sites made more accessible.
