Aurora Borealis or Northern Lights displays photographed taken over Aberdeeshire in Scotland since 1989 covering some 350 events with arc, rays, coronas with a wide rnage of shapes and colours
Deeside Aurora au99611jhp Aurora Borealis Scottish Cassiopeia rays moonlight spring March 1999 Deeside Aberdeenshire Scotland taken on the morning of the 1st March, 1996 at Crooktree, 25 miles west of Aberdeen looking to north. This photo was taken at 00.19.45hrsUT having shown an arc and then much ray activity from 22.50hrs UT on the 28th February finishing at around 01.25hrs on 1st March. The next activity visible and recorded was not until the 8-9th September. This photo was scanned from a 35mm colour slide film, Fuji RSP processed for a 1600asa rating using a Nikon FG20, 28mm f2.8 lens wide open with many exposures on Auto at around 2 seconds because of the moonlight, light levels. This photo was taken at 18.19hrsUT having shown an arc from 17.50 the evening with active rays but not all from the arc until around 00.30hrsUT on the morning of the 14th. The next activity was at 20.35hrs UT on the evening of the 23rd January and finished around 23.05 with a faint arc. This photo was scanned from a 35mm colour slide film, Fuji RSP processed for a 1600asa rating using a Nikon FM2, 28mm f2.8 lens wide open at around 20 seconds. Aurora Deeside jkl8299jhp Aurora Borealis Scotland winter Scottish green red rays Royal Deeside taken on the 27th February, 2014 at Crooktree, 25 miles west of Aberdeen is the first display I have seen this year and the best for several years since the end of the previous Solar Cycle in 2006 although initial forecasts did not suggest a display of this strength was likely over the UK from a glancing CME. It was in fact observed and photographed as far south as Essex in England. This photo and those up to the cottage roof view where taken between 20.15 and 20.35 and give an idea of how active and varied a display can be in such a short time. It was also the most active phase of the evenings display including a fairly rare occurrence of a folded arc, more common in the most northern regions. This photograph was taken with a Nikon D700 full frame DSLR using a 28mm Nikkor f2.8 lens at f4 and ISO settings of 6400 allowing for much shorter exposure times e.g. circa 10 sec average times with hopefully more accurate recordings of these moving events. The first activity photographed of this display was about 19.50, looking west of North to the west of Torphins, this one was around 20.44 and was after the arc has disappeared and the ray activity continued to the North with red high level oxygen gas colour started to appear more noticeably. The photo is of the Roman birth house or mammisi built by Trajan with some of the finest carvings in Egypt, here with scenes of Hathor suckling her son Ihy and another of him behind her with the King Trajan making offering to her. Queen Hatshepsut erected several Obelisks, one of the two remaining largest obelisks stands between the fourth and fifth pylons looking north in the Transverse Hall but the southern obelisk had collapsed and the main section of the top with the pyramidion is lying horizontally near the Sacred Lake. This lake was originally supplied with water through underground tunnels from the River Nile and would have fluctuated when the river flooded; these days the level remains the same through out the year. Priest’s houses have been found around the area the modern light show sitting is, there was a Nilometer and also an area for introducing the sacred geese. Accessed usually through the Gate of Ramesses 1X but is often approached from the walk back from the Festival Hall of Tuthmosis and the Gate of Nectanebo on the east of the Central Enclosure. This view of Queen Hatshepsut's Obelisk, one of two remaining standing obelisks, is from the far side of the Sacred Lake using a telephoto lens. The obelisk of red Aswan granite is the third tallest standing in the world, weighs over 320 tons and stands nearly 30 metres. Encased by Thutmosis 111 who disapproved of his Aunt, his bid to remove her existence benefited us in that the lower section remained largely intact but higher sections were defaced by Akhenaten some 130 years later. On the door lintel are mirror versions of the same person, Roy-Rome, a long serving High Priest to Amun with arms raised in praise but to where a cartouche, now hacked out, would have been. The figures on the right are two priests in linen robes, one of Roy-Rome, the other his son Beknekhonsu offering praise is an extensive area of text which refers to Seti 11. Interior paintings are in colour and general preservation is good. It is short walk from Amadah, the Temple to Amun-Re and Re-Harakhte and slightly further along is the the Temple of el-Derr. These three sites are usually visited on one visit from the cruiseboat and do involve some walking on desert sand often in extreme heat. Sebua Temple Statues EG051699JHP Egypt Ancient Temple Lake Nasser es-Sebua Sphinx Avenue Statues Ramasses is located on the shores of Lake Nasser after relocation from its previous location 2km away to avoid flooding after the creation of the High Dam in Aswan. The temple was built by Ramesses 11 of which much evidence stands as statues, sphinxes and engaged Osiride Statues in the inner courtyards. The temple was later used for Christian worship and has the curious site of Ramesses adoring St Peter in the sanctuary. This site is usually a part of a Lake Nasser cruise and begins a part of the cruise which is completed with a longish hot desert walk to the nearby sites of Dakka and Maharraka before returning to the cruiseboat. One of several small antiquities visited during a Lake Nasser cruise it has some coloured wall reliefs still intact and is then fallowed after a short walk to the Rock Cut Temple of al-Derr. Luxor Merenptah Temple EG075299jhp Egyptian Mudbrick Temple Merneptah ruins West Bank Luxor Museum pylon, an Egyptian Pharaoh who reigned around 1212-1202BC, son of Ramasses 11, is on the West Bank of the Nile at Luxor and this photo was taken from the main West bank road looking towards the River Nile and with the Ramasseum towards the extreme left. A new museum and some excavated parts of his temple were opened in 2005. It is a mixture of open air and covered museum exhibits with some remains of the temple area with column bases. Some of the coloured wall reliefs are exquisite and because of the natural light available were easily photographed despite being inside. There is also a replica of the famous Israeli Stele, the original being in the Cairo Museum. This is a visit that would have to made outwith the usual West Bank package tour although easily arranged and is easily found next to the Ramasseum. Rekhmire Tomb Painting EG075699JHP Rekhmire Tomb Luxor Painting Workmen Carving Statue Ancient Egyptian Craftsman, one of many beautiful tomb decorations only lit by reflected sunlight amongst the Tombs of the Nobles on the West Bank of the River Nile at Luxor. Rekhmire Tomb-Chapel [Tomb 100] was a Vizier during the reigns of Tuthmosis 11 and Amenhotep 11, part of a family with long service as administrators at Thebes. This highly decorated cruciform tomb is full images giving great understanding of Egyptian foreign policy, taxation and the justice system. The area around the Tombs has now been greatly improved with removal of many of the old modern houses and entry to these fascinating burial sites made more accessible. In this photo is one of his supposed seated figures but with the feature of Tutankhamun and the open papyrus columns were the work of Amenhotep. On the side of the huge black granite seats are carvings in excellent state of repair illustrating early the mythology of ancient Egypt, the Union of the Two Lands; Upper and Lower Egypt. Throughout this elegant structure, so much more understandable than the sprawling complex at Karnak, there are examples of the great skills of workmanship that give ancient Egyptian monuments their huge appeal and impact even in these modern days. Amarna North Palace EG075899jhp Amarna North Palace Scared Lake archaeology Mudbrick walls chambers Egypt Akhenaten by the River Nile at el-Till across to the east bank of the river and near the modern Egyptian city of Minya is built round a sacred pool now identified by a few palm trees in its centre. The North Palace along with the Hall of Foreign Tribute were perhaps part of the living areas for the royal family of Akhetaten, his Queen Nefertiti and senior officials and courtiers although little remains now except the foundations and bases of columns. Some restoration following extensive archaeological work by the Amarna project is evident and allows the visitor to get some sense of the scale of this site, after the first visited after the Northern Tombs are explored. Tuna el-Gebel Well Wheels 6299EG07JHP Ancient Egypt Necropolis Tuna el-Gebel City Dead Water Wheel Roman Well with various chapels, temples and catacombs for animal mummies and many more which are still buried and unexcavated under the desert sands. The site is centred on a Temple of Thoth, badly ruined, dating from Ramesside through to Roman times and was a place of pilgrimage so there are buildings for accommodation as well and remains of a Roman water wheel as illustrated in this photo obtaining its water from a deep well. Near to the cemetery is the northern boundary stela of Akhenaten which can be visited after a short low grade climb up steps where it is protected from the elements behind a Perspex screen. Alexandria Tomb Relief eg961399jhp Egypt Alexandria city tomb carved scallop shell roof Kom al-Shawqaiah catacombs Mediterranean is no longer reminiscent of the ancient city from Pharaonic times and little of that ancient time remains. A few isolated sites can be visited and this is called Kom es-Shogafa, also spelt es-Shoquafa, al-Shawqaiah a necropolis of catacombs and ongoing archaeology. The garden area of this site has many exhibits including sarcophagi, carved capitals as well as a reconstructed Tombs, most well know is known as Tigrane [Tigran] rescued from construction work in Tigrane Pasha Street in 1952. The style of decoration in this tomb is particularly important as it shows the blending of the major influences in the City’s history-Egyptian, Greek and Roman. The City has a distinctly European rather than Egyptian feel to it; it is sometimes offered as a day trip on a Cairo package but is seldom part of the main Nile packages. I hired my own taxi and the driver was sufficiently knowledgeable to take me to the main ‘ancient’ sites I could manage in a few hours. Access to Senusret’s pyramid is through a local village and agricultural land at the edge of the desert escarpment as is common with most of the pyramid sites south of Giza. I remember passing a very well kept football pitch. A local custodian took me around and also allowed me to take flash photographs of some coloured reliefs on limestone blocks under a roofed area. The pyramid has almost totally collapsed into a huge sandy mound but there were still one section of limestone casing intact and not plundered and around the site were hints at its previous enclosure wall structure with large sections of eroded limestone sticking out of the sand like a whales skeleton. The burial chamber thought to have been robbed shortly after his death is under the ground water table and is inaccessible. The site dates back to the Middle Kingdom-Senusret’a reign was 1971-1926BC and he was the son of Amenemhet 1 building his pyramid near his fathers. Amenemhet Pyramid Lisht eg0099jhp Egypt Lisht pyramid Amenemhet 1 Fayoum Middle Kingdom collapsed enclosure wall is one of the later built lower grade constructions from c1970BC situated 2km from his sons’, Senwosret 1, a uninspiring mound. Amenemhet’s construction was found to contain fragments and blocks from Saqqara and Giza pyramids and complexes thought to have been incorporated for spiritual reasons rather than stealing them. Situated near a canal, an offshoot of the Nile it is possible that construction material was transported by water. Little is left of his mortuary temple and the valley temple accessed by a causeway is under ground water level. Mastaba’s and 22 tomb shafts for the royal harem were found on the west side. The site is near Faiyum, to the south of Cairo was the last pyramid built in the 12th Dynasty by the Pharaoh Amenemhet 111 of the later design using mudbrick core with limestone covering, now all missing. Most famous for the references to the Labyrinth; a comparison of its mortuary and temple complex to that at Knossos by Herodotus although little now remains new excavations are underway to determine what might still exist. This pyramid was built after the king’s first attempt at Dashur was abandoned owing to subsidence problems. The second part of the evening is seated and photography is very easy, a tripod is permitted and necessary for time exposures to be made as flash on cameras is almost pointless and more of a nuisance for other viewers. This Sound & Light Show is perhaps the most spiritual of those shown at other centres especially with the trip at night by boat to the island and the peacefulness that naturally surrounds this location. Sites that border the Nile are included although the major temples visted have their own dedicated sites such as Edfu and Kom Ombo. One of the enjoyments of the Nile cruise is the tranquility of watching 'life go by' usually characterised by the friendliness of those you pass whether boatmen or farm workers as well as seeing wild birds close at hand. The other aspect is the service on the cruiseboats from friendly crews and the chance to relax after hectic and often crowded temple visits.

Seheil Rock Carvings EG052642JHP Seheil Island Ancient Egypt Rock Carving Number 99 Boulder Figure on this island near Aswan amongst the River Nile cataracts. The main reason for this private excursion by motorboat was to visit the rock carvings which cover this boulder strewn part of the Nile recording many events throughout the ancient history of the Egyptian Empire spanning some 3000 years although most were made in the 18-18 Dynasties. Most were the work of officials, often before they went to Nubia or reporting their efforts on return. The most notable carving is the Ptolemaic Famine Stele which refers to a famine during the reign of Doser, famous for the Step Pyramid at Saqqara, some 2000 years before. A few ruined crofts or farms can be seen and evidence of past Highland clearances as well as illustrating the hard life of farming in this unfertile moorland where in today’s harsh economic climate even sheep farming is a struggle. There is a distant view of the distinct summit of the Tap O'Noth hill near Rhynie on which remains the vitrified fortifications from a Pictish hilltop fort and from which can be seen a similar relic from the past on Bennachie near Inverurie. The Howe of Mearns is a central part low lying flat fertile farmland in the centre of an area stretching from the south of Stonehaven to the Tay Estuary. Once you head North West over the various Angus Glens or over the Cairn O’Mount from Fettercairn you go into hill farming, moorland or forested estates onto Deeside and eventually reach the Highlands. The cliffs stick out on a small headland but with sheer drops into the North Sea but offering spectacular views of the sea pounding on the rocks below and views northwards along the coast from Braidon Bay and to the distant Forley Craig beyond Catterline, famous for its seafood restaurant. The lighthouse was built in 1897 by D.A. Stevenson and is still a stylish if sad reminder of the heyday of Victorian Maritime heritage. Its short ‘dumpy’ tower hides a shaft dug into the cliffs underneath which allowed the original clockwork mechanism to operate as described in Jane Geddes’s Deeside and Mearns Architectural Guide. Photo of the super blue moon, second full moon in August was taken on evening of 30th August at 21.48BST using a Nikkor AF-S 28-300 mm zoom lens on a tripod with a cable release as the exposure time was .3sec at f8 with an ISO of 2500. This is not what would be deemed astronomical quality but gives the false impression it is bigger than it is as so close to a natural foreground whereas a few hours later it will appear much smaller high in the night sky-in fact it is exactly the same size in reality. This was taken the evening of the fullest moon-the last time this close and as 'big' was 1948. It is all relative to the beholder and certainly other full moons appear much the same-taken as it clears the hill top as gives more of a sense of scale. Deeside-Spring-Sunset-qax6499jhp Deeside Scottish May evening sunset clouds hilline Aberdeenshire Kincardine O’Neil is some 25 miles west of Aberdeen in North East Scotland. So far this was the first decent colourful sunset of 2020. The most dramatic and vibrant period only lasts a few minutes so it is very much being in the right place at the best time but it helps having a forest or nice river scene on the doorstep but with a major mountain range to the west of Deeside, often the sun setting behind them or a large bank of rain cloud kills off the best of any last minute colour. The biggest problem with sunsets are they can take longer from the start of colourful clouds through to the more subtle final reds but every evening the shapes and nature of the clouds and light is different. This one was taken on the 18th May, 2020 around 9.30pm BST. NLC Torphins zxc2599jhp Noctilucent clouds NLC eerie summer Scottish Aberdeenshire night sky blue network rare event usually occurring between latitudes 55 and 65 degrees resembling thin cirrus but most often a bluish silvery colour although orange or reddish colours and are a beautiful and eerie sight, the spidery network rather like the mind filaments from Dumbeldore's Pensieve in Harry Potter usually of sapphire blue, gossamer white or occasionally red colours from ice crystals catching the last twilight is seen around the time the brightest stars appear and their strength grows around maximum darkness, usually after midnight BST. They happen only a few times a year and need a clear cloudless night best to see them although in this photo the normal clouds are also present. This is taken looking magnetic 45 degrees from Crooktree over Torphins and 25 miles west of Aberdeen in North East Scotland, the first show in 2014 in the early morning of the 3rd July. Taken at 23.26 UT [after midnight in BST] using a D700 Nikon DSLR with 50mm f1.8 prime lens at f2.8, 1.6 second exposure at ISO500. Banchory Autumn bnm9917jhp Banchory South Deeside road beech trees autumn colours Inverey fishing gate Kincardineshire is located near the Feugh bridge with its famous salmon leaping falls before you cross over the River Dee into Banchory coming from the south east. This is the largest Deeside town on the River Dee and is some 18 miles west of Aberdeen in North East Scotland. It has always been a main visitor centre either for day trippers from Aberdeen or the usual flow of coaches and other visitors heading from Aberdeen westwards to Braemar and from there south to Perth or north to Inverness. It is also offers a very scenic route southwards over the Cairn O’Mount to Mearns. Small Tortoiseshell bnm9099jhp Butterfly small tortoiseshell rear view buddleia feeding Deeside Scotland summer photograph as they feed and fly between different buddleia bushes. Numbers are better this year, 2017, although still down on 20 years ago when 100plus was not unusual. So far this year I have counted over 50 at one time, mainly Peacocks and Red Admirals with a couple of Small Tortoiseshells and one Dark Green Fritillary but some good sunny spells seems to have got them active. One surprise was to find a Golden Ringed Dragonfly hanging from a buddleia early in the morning, no movement of any kind while I photographed it but it had gone 10 mins later when I came out again. Crathes Castle Snowscene 151399jhp Crathes Castle Gardens croquet lawn topiary white winter snow Banchory Aberdeenshire Scotland which offers a wonderful vista of this historic property which dates from the 16th century although the land belonged to the Burnett’s of Leys as a gift from Robert the Bruce in 1323. In the great hall is the Horn of Leys, supposedly a symbol of this grant. The tower house is one of the finest examples of the period and some of the original wall paintings still survive. Entry into the walled garden is at the west side and the main path into the gardens is through the white borders and onto the path down the June Borders to the bottom of the walled garden where there is a Doocot an attractive feature and useful high point for looking up the June Border, the summer jewel resplendent with many colourful plants, with the Castle as its impressive backdrop. Turning left at the main entrance leads to the Topiary Borders and Terrace, past the Camel Garden and climbing the steps enters the upper level with the Croquet Lawn and Lady Burnett or Upper Pool Garden. This photo was taken in the days of transparency film before digital was even a serious contender for recording these properties for the publishing market. Little has changed since this photo was taken except the distant rhododendrons which used to border the path coming down to the castle. Also it seems with climate change the days of deep snow are far less at the castle and Aberdeenshire generally. Auchindoir Church asd7299jhp St Mary's Church Auchindoir inside Gordon clan coat arms carvings Aberdeenshire summer Scotland ruin romantic is reached by taking first left turning after Lumsden on road to Rhynie and Huntly in North East Aberdeenshire near Morayshire. This is inside the church next to the elaborately carved Sacrament House now protected by a clear awning is this carved set of coat of arms above a tombstone lid bearing the Gordon Coat of Arms. This 13th Century building was later remodelled in 16th century, with a fine elaborately carved and detailed Scottish medieval door and inside it has a very beautiful sacrament house on the inside, styled like a monstrance and inserted in a lancet window. The backdrop is the spectacular Craig Burn Den or gorge with large woodland of mature beech trees. Photograph showa east interior wall with stonewrok, windows and upper floor but basic structure is a shell. Still in Forbes family, probably built around late 1580’s by Patrick Forbes, Bishop of Aberdeen from 1564-1663. Fairly traditional Z-Plan tower-house of the area and in a state unlikely to be restored. Nearby is part of a fortress of the Comyn Earls of Buchan of which little now remains and the chapel overlooks the south east end of a bird reserve on the Loch of Strathbeg. The Chapel of St Mary’s has unclear dating history possibly held to go back to 911AD while the standing ruins are possibly 13th century. Huntly Castle jkl7899jhp Huntly Castle winter trees bare sun shadows ruin Aberdeenshire Scotland fort palace, the present manifestation being basically a Palace, is situated on a strategic hillock over looking the River Deveron near its joining the Bogie at the town of Huntly where traces of a motte and bailey stood dating back to the 12th century. The present ruin dates from the 15th century and is adorned with 17th century oriels and armorials. It was the family seat of the Gordon Earl’s of Huntly for much of its chequered history and major player in the history of Scotland from the days of Robert the Bruce to the troubles times of the Covenanter’s. As this is a Historic Scotland property the photograph should be used for editorial, scenic or tourist related use. The castle carpark is a few yards from the entrance and ticket office and is accessed passing through the centre of Huntly and past the Gordon School. It is open for most of the summer and requires an entrance fee to be paid. A very large complex of moats, bastions and buildings with spectacular outlooks to the surrounding sea and countryside it is well preserved historical site and fine example of military construction and it should be as probably the most expensive military fortification built in the Britain. Completed in 1796 and in the context of Scottish history, it appears more a statement of political empowerment to thwart any ambitions of the Highlanders towards future sedition rather than dealing with any likely military threat. This fortress occupies a site going back into Pictish or earlier times and has had an association with most aspects of Scottish history through its most turbulent times, most notable was the siege during Cromwell’s attempts to conquer Scotland and again in 1685 during the imprisonment of the Covenanters in the infamous Whigs Vault; viewed here from cliffs near the start of the steps down to the beach. River Lossie Tree WTN1999JHP Elgin Cathedral Riverbank Lossie Tree Spring Daffs Moray Scotland Photo was founded in 1224 although a substantial ruin now cared for by Historic Scotland remains one of the most beautiful medieval buildings in Scotland and viewed here from the spring flora on the banks of the River Lossie. The transepts with their buttressed west towers and parts of the tall choir and nave date from the fire of 1270 but subsequent destruction especially by the Wolf of Badenoch in 1390 and later further destruction and neglect after the Reformation means we will never see this building in its true majesty. The Memorial was the first and is still the only one dedicated to the Women’s Land Army which was formed in 1917 and continued on with even greater importance during WW2. This interesting and eye catching sculpture is the work of the Artist Peter Naylor and unveiled in 2012 by HRH Prince of Wales. This was the first snowfall on November 2017 and possibly showing some signs of weathering with its russet rust colour. From the site on the Fochabers Crown Estate it is possible to see the sea and across the Moray Firth to the distance mountains and hills of Easter Ross, Cromarty and the Black Isle. River Dee Balmoral 199631jhp River Dee Royal Deeside Balmoral estate summer roadside Lochnagar mountain located in Aberdeenshire Scotland and viewed by the North Deeside Road from the roadside near to Balmoral Castle where this famous salmon fishing river passes amongst the trees. Looking westwards in the direction of Lochnagar, Scotland’s fourth highest mountain, its distinctive outline above the forest to left of centre horizon line. The road continues westwards towards Inver, Invercauld and eventually Braemar. This photograph was taken in 2002 the last year I used slide film, either 35mm or 645 as my main medium for landscape photography. It is still representative of the general countryside despite their age and is chosen because of the lovely light and colours as it can still be on the right day. Old Dee Brig Invercauld 199621jhp Old Brig O’Dee stone bridge downstream river Dee Invercauld Scottish White Mounth hills and is one of the many military bridges built after the Forty Five Rebellion and that carried troops across the Highlands. This was built by Major Caulfield 1752 although often called a General Wade bridge, the person who started the process many years earlier. The bridge is located just east of Braemar and this view is from eastern side of the bridge, looking upstream with the golden colours of autumn larch and silver birch. Fishing on Dee bnm7997jhp River Dee Banchory Crathes summer fisherman dpwnstream riverbank trees Scottish Deeside town Aberdeenshire some 18 miles west of Aberdeen in North East Scotland. The town has always been a main visitor centre either for day trippers from Aberdeen or the usual flow of coaches and other visitors heading from Aberdeen westwards to Braemar and from there south to Perth or north to Inverness. It is also offers a very scenic route southwards over the Cairn O’Mount to Mearns. The river is a famous salmon fishing water which flows from the Cairngorms eastwards into the North Sea at Aberdeen and this view is at the eastern end of the town looking back towards Scolty Hill adjacent to the terminus of the Deeside Railway from Milton. One of earliest photos was a dawn shot of the River with a silhouette of a fishing hut on the north bank but on this visit I found only the foundations were left. There is a public pay and display car park mid way up the metalled road across from the centre and the main walk to St Lesmo Chapel which is popular for weddings making use of Glen Tanar House ballroom for receptions and conferences and this view of the loch a very popular backdrop for the main wedding portraits.
