Aswan River Nile EG052800jhp Egypt Egyptian Aswan river Nile Mausoleum Botanical Gardens motorboat desert and part of a trip to visit an exhibition Nubian Village but passed by boats travelling to the cataract islands such as Seheil or on the traditional afternoon sail offered in most tour packages and one route for those visiting the Monastery of St Simeon. What is also important is the close awareness of the inhospitable nature of the cataracts, now benign because of the impact of the two dams across the river, but imagining these huge rocks in a Nile inundation and one could understand the barrier that it created for those travellers trying to head further south by boat. Luxor Temple Colonnade EG074800jhp Luxor Temple Egyptian colonnade Amenhotep granite Ramses Tutankhamun features located on the east bank of the River Nile at Luxor, Egypt is credited to Ramses 11 as the main builder and these are his massive granite statues that greet the visitor at the entrance to the first pylon. In this photo is one of his supposed seated figures but with the feature of Tutankhamun and the open papyrus columns were the work of Amenhotep. On the side of the huge black granite seats are carvings in excellent state of repair illustrating early the mythology of ancient Egypt, the Union of the Two Lands; Upper and Lower Egypt. Throughout this elegant structure, so much more understandable than the sprawling complex at Karnak, there are examples of the great skills of workmanship that give ancient Egyptian monuments their huge appeal and impact even in these modern days. The City has a distinctly European rather than Egyptian feel to it; it is sometimes offered as a day trip on a Cairo package but is seldom part of the main Nile packages. I hired my own taxi and the driver was sufficiently knowledgeable to take me to the main ‘ancient’ sites I could manage in a few hours. NLC Over Torphins zxc2800jhp Noctilucent clouds NLC summer night Scottish hilltop Aberdeenshire sky blue network rare event usually occurring between latitudes 55 and 65 degrees resembling thin cirrus but most often a bluish silvery colour although orange or reddish colours and are a beautiful and eerie sight, the spidery network rather like the mind filaments from Dumbeldore's Pensive in Harry Potter usually of sapphire blue, gossamer white or occasionally red colours from ice crystals catching the last twilight is seen around the time the brightest stars appear and their strength grows around maximum darkness, usually after midnight BST. They happen only a few times a year and need a clear cloudless night best to see them although in this photo the normal clouds are also present. This is taken looking magnetic 45 degrees from Crooktree over Torphins and 25 miles west of Aberdeen in North East Scotland, the early show of the evening of 6th July, 2014. Taken at 23.03 UT [nearly midnight in BST] using a D700 Nikon DSLR with Tokina SD 28-70mm lens at f4, .5 second exposure at ISO500. In the great hall is the Horn of Leys, supposedly a symbol of this grant.The tower house is one of the finest examples of the period and some of the original wall paintings still survive. The location has had a history going back for over 800 years, there was a medieval Palace for the Bishop’s of Aberdeen, which was located to the south of the present house in the photograph. SEPP have carried out excavations of the site finding considerable evidence of the early palace. The current house dates from around 1566 after it was acquired by the Leslies of Balquhain although from a small tower originally it has expanded to the present façade in 1818. The carved panel above the main entrance is attributed to Count Patrick Leslie around 1690. Although it is accessible to view it is in a dangerous state of disrepair and is fenced off from public access. Early Cross Banchory TO1780029jhp Banchory town early Christian cross carved granite inset watch tower Kincardineshire Royal Deeside Scotland is located on the side of the Historic Watch Tower in the main cemetery of this large Deeside town on the River Dee some 18 miles west of Aberdeen in North East Scotland. It has always been a main visitor centre either for day trippers from Aberdeen or the usual flow of coaches and other visitors heading from Aberdeen westwards to Braemar and from there south to Perth or north to Inverness. It is also offers a very scenic route southwards over the Cairn O’Mount to Mearns. Scolty Hill with its memorial tower is a distinctive landscape pointer to the town with easily accessible forest walks and a not too strenuous walk to its summits with pleasing views of much of Royal Deeside as well as interesting views to the north and south. One of earliest photos was a dawn shot of the River with a silhouette of a fishing hut on the north bank but on this visit I found only the foundations were left.
