Nacreous-Clouds-wsc7029jhp British Grampian Nacreous clouds forest West vibrant colourful iridescent PSCs rare winter event taken on the afternoon of 24th December, 2023 at Crooktree, 25 miles west of Aberdeen, at 16.10hrsUT and was discovered by accident during extremely strong gusty winds looking Westwards over Ord Fundlie forest and was the last photo taken. These iridescent clouds are high altitude cirriform lenticular polar stratospheric, type 11 events, a rare winter sighting caused by twilight sunlight diffracted off ice crystals or water droplets with nitric or sulphuric acid content; sometimes called Mother of Pearl clouds because of the nature of the colour effect. This photograph was taken with a Nikon D700 full frame DSLR using a 28-300mm AF-S Nikkor ED zoom lens at f11 aperture, 78mm focal length, 1600 ISO with exposure of 1/25th second. Deeside-Sunset-qax9505jhp Deeside Scotland summer sunset telephoto orange clouds colours details shapes Aberdeenshire Kincardine O’Neil is some 25 miles west of Aberdeen in North East Scotland. The most colourful period only lasts a few minutes so it is very much being in the right place at the best time but it helps having a forest or nice river scene on the doorstep but with a major mountain range to the west of Deeside, often the sun setting behind them or a large bank of rain cloud kills off the best of any last minute colour. The biggest problem with sunsets are they can take longer from the start of colourful clouds through to the more subtle final reds but every evening the shapes and nature of the clouds and light is different. This one was taken on the 16th June, 2021 around 21.00hrs UT.
