Aurora Borealis or Northern Lights displays photographed taken over Aberdeeshire in Scotland since 1989 covering some 350 events with arc, rays, coronas with a wide rnage of shapes and colours
Deeside Aurora 2016 vbn1777jhp Aurora Borealis Scotland last 2016 photo faint display Deeside Aberdeenshire taken on the 1st January, 2016 at Crooktree, 25 miles west of Aberdeen caused over the UK from a glancing CME and a timely end to the year gift given that the previous three displays I missed because of cloud cover. This photo was taken at 01.06UT 2016 with a secondary active phase of the evenings display which started some 1 hour earlier beginning to die down and this photo gives a pretty accurate illustration of how the display would look to the eye with perhaps less of a green hue than this slightly enhanced photo shows. This photograph was taken with a Nikon D700 full frame DSLR using a 28mm Nikkor f2.8 lens at f4 and ISO setting of 3200 with an exposure time of 16 secs. This is taken looking due North and the green tinge is from low level oxygen gas at Crooktree, located between Torphins to the right and Craigton Hill and Kincardine O'Neil to the left. The Botanical Gardens are a pleasant relaxing visit with walks though tree covered paths, splashes of colourful flowers, wild birds and the occasional cat by places to sit and the usual rest house at the main disembarking area when the visit is completed. On the side of the huge black granite seats are carvings in excellent state of repair illustrating early the mythology of ancient Egypt, the Union of the Two Lands; Upper and Lower Egypt. Throughout this elegant structure, so much more understandable than the sprawling complex at Karnak, there are examples of the great skills of workmanship that give ancient Egyptian monuments their huge appeal and impact even in these modern days. Maidenstone Stone Bennachie jkl8777jhp Maiden Stone carved stone spring Bennachie summit Scottish Aberdeenshire Pictish Christian relic stands by the roadside near Pitcaple and is easily accessible for the causal visit from a small lay-by carpark. It is thought to date from the 9th century AD with a mixture of Pictish and early Christian symbols carved on pink granite stone and is probably one of the last carved in Grampian. It is so-called after the daughter of a local landowner who died during her elopement. During winter and spring with trees bare of foliage it is possible to see the summit of Bennachie. Started by Alexander 11 and possibly later extended after a visit by Edward 1 of England in 1296. It survived many sieges, being burnt and later restored, before being largely dismantled after the Jacobite rising of 1715 when used as the headquarters for the Earl of Mar. It is a magnificent ruin and the scale of the thick walls is particularly impressive despite not being as well preserved as many similar English ruins. As this is a Historic Scotland property the photograph should be used for editorial, scenic or tourist related use. Other material included was gathered for other AA Publishing Guides including Shetland, Pitlochry and Tayside. New photographs are now included from 2012 book commission travels in Angus, Perth, Kinross, Trossachs and Tayside.
