Images of two important sites north of Luxor near the River Nile but usually visted as an extra tour either by road or a day cruise.
Dendera Temple EG007129jhp Dendera temple Egypt Tiberian Hall ceiling carvings painted Hathor damaged faces in this beautiful mainly Ptolemaic and Roman structure although the site extends back into the earliest periods of Egyptian existence and it is also famous as having one of the only representations the famous Queen Cleopatra V11 with her son by Julius Caesar, Caesarion.This photo is of the elaborate ceiling and columns of the Tiberian columned hall which first faces the visitor entering the temple proper. The tops of the columns have Hathor faces vandalised in antiquity, probably when it was filled with sand and seen as pagan for the earlier Christians who often used these temples as churches and were thus easily able to obliterate the faces. What is very wonderful even today is the elaborate nature of the decorations not only on the ceilings but also covering in exquisite details all the sides of the columns and the surrounding walls. The temple can be reached by road from Luxor and is also the destination for a popular day cruise on the River Nile from Luxor via Qena. Walking around the many darkly lit passages and rooms there are occasional gems like this where a hole in the ceiling or wall lets a spotlight of sunshine highlight just one part of the elaborately carved and decorated walls. The water here was used for rituals carried out during the Feast of Osiris and nearby is the well from which the water was drawn. Photos of the recently opened Temple of Merneptah site on West Bank at Luxor with coloured reliefs, open air museum exhibits and interior carvings and paintings.
Merenptah EG050919jhp Egyptian Merneptah Merenptah pharaoh statue legs carving West Bank Luxor museum photo of this open air museum site an Egyptian Pharaoh who reigned around 1212-1202BC, son of Ramasses 11, is on the West Bank of the Nile at Luxor and this photo was taken from the main West bank road looking towards the River Nile and with the Ramasseum towards the extreme left. A new museum and some excavated parts of his temple were opened in 2005. It is a mixture of open air and covered museum exhibits with some remains of the temple area with column bases. Some of the coloured wall reliefs are exquisite and because of the natural light available were easily photographed despite being inside. There is also a replica of the famous Israeli Stele, the original being in the Cairo Museum. This is a visit that would have to made outwith the usual West Bank package tour although easily arranged and is easily found next to the Ramasseum. Cottown Balgownie 191126jhp Aberdeen Cottown street Scottish River Don Crossing Brig O'Balgownie is an attractive terrace of houses from Balgownie Road in the Bridge of Don on the North side of the River which leads onto the famous single span bridge over the River Don. At this point for many centuries was the only crossing of the river and the main route north from Aberdeen originally built in the early 1300's but altered and rebuilt several times since - now only used as a footbridge with access to Seaton Park and the University grounds.. This photograph was taken in 2002 the last year I used slide film, either 35mm or 645 as my main medium for landscape photography. They are still representative of the City despite their age and is chosen because of the lovely light and colours as it can still be on the right day. Bridge of Don 191127jhp Aberdeen City Bridge Don River Spring Daffodils Bridge riverbank estuary to the north of the city and the road bridge over the River Don viewed over spring colour at Donmouth on the main road north of the City into North East Scotland. The Bridge of Don is a rapidly expanding area north of the River Don with the Aberdeen Exhibition and Conference Centre bringing many attractions to the City and it is adjacent to the Balgownie Golf Course which is a famous links course by the North Sea. This photograph was taken in 2002 the last year I used slide film, either 35mm or 645 as my main medium for landscape photography. The offers walks and many areas to exercise and enjoy flower displays as well with easy access across the famous Brig O’Balgownie to Donside and the banks of the River Don as it flows eventually into the North Sea. Also in the park is the Wallace Tower, a partial replica of Benholm’s House or Lodging once situated in the Netherkirkgate but demolished in 1964. The present structure incorporates some of the original stonework from this unique z-plan towerhouse and one of the four remaining 16th Century buildings in the City. Corsedardar Finzean 198331jhp Feughside Corsedardar hill Aberdeernshire Dardanus Scots King broken marker burial is on a popular drive between Finzean and Aboyne following the B976 westwards into Aberdeenshire. It follows the course of the River Feugh which flows into the River Dee at Banchory but the upper end starting at Finzean is famous for its connection to the snow and sheep painter Joseph Farquharson whose estate and home was located there. The broken stone partly repaired with iron bands and cement after workmen broke it is supposed to stand in its original position and across from the modern War Memorial; nearby is a Millennium standing stone. The broken stone is claimed to have marked the place nearby where an early Scottish Pictish King Dardanus was killed circa AD75, according to Hector Boece’s History of the Scots 1527, because of his cruelty and universal dislike. This whole legend is beyond determining as fact. Slightly south west downhill of this and in the forest is a Long Cairn possibly dating to c.4000BC. This photograph was taken in 2002 the last year I used slide film, either 35mm or 645 as my main medium for landscape photography. It is still representative of the general countryside despite their age and is chosen because of the lovely light and colours as it can still be on the right day. Obviously avoid damaging crops although access should be left. Wonderful panoramic views over Aberdeenshire and Donside to the south and west with the hill of Bennachie in centre distance. The general view many years after this photo to Bennachie has been ruined by an inappropriately situated huge metal barn and a good illustration at the thoughtless planning permission rules operated in Aberdeenshire. River Dee Balmoral 199631jhp River Dee Royal Deeside Balmoral estate summer roadside Lochnagar mountain located in Aberdeenshire Scotland and viewed by the North Deeside Road from the roadside near to Balmoral Castle where this famous salmon fishing river passes amongst the trees. Looking westwards in the direction of Lochnagar, Scotland’s fourth highest mountain, its distinctive outline above the forest to left of centre horizon line. The road continues westwards towards Inver, Invercauld and eventually Braemar. This photograph was taken in 2002 the last year I used slide film, either 35mm or 645 as my main medium for landscape photography. Old Dee Brig Invercauld 199621jhp Old Brig O’Dee stone bridge downstream river Dee Invercauld Scottish White Mounth hills and is one of the many military bridges built after the Forty Five Rebellion and that carried troops across the Highlands. This was built by Major Caulfield 1752 although often called a General Wade bridge, the person who started the process many years earlier. The bridge is located just east of Braemar and this view is from eastern side of the bridge, looking upstream with the golden colours of autumn larch and silver birch. Donside Inverurie 19209jhp Inverurie River Don Spring Daffodils Coldwells Burnhervie Donside Aberdeenshire Scotland taken from the Burnhervie Road at Coldwells looking westwards on the road past Fetternear either for Kemnay or continuing on to Monymusk crossing the River Don. Although the town is now bypassed for the main route north to Huntly and Inverness it is still the hub for one of the main routes north to Banff and is an expanding commuter location for Aberdeen itself with road and railway connections. Bennachie Mid Mar 192710jhp Bennachie Mar Aberdeenshire Corsindae beech trees gean blossom spring Scottish rural taken from the roadside on the Corsindae road heading north from Mid-Mar near Echt, past the Kirk with its Standing Stones and very typical of an Aberdeenshire rural scene as the winter goes and spring colours start to appear but with field borders of mature beech trees still bare of leaves. Bennachie Hill to the west of Inverurie by the River Don is a distinctive landmark in central Aberdeenshire with its unusual peak man made with its partially vitrified Pictish fort remains and easily accessed from a visitors centre on the Chapel of Garioch road between Monymusk and Pitcaple. The road passes St Palladius Church and Drumtochty Castle in Glen Drumtochty which has interesting Forest Enterprise walks through mixed mature woodland and after leaving the forest the road enters Strath Finella passing this delightful loch near Glensaugh, used for fishing and often visited by ducks and swans. Brig O Dee Invercauld 1912533jhp Old Brig O’Dee stone bridge heather river Dee Invercauld Scottish cirrus clouds dramatic light and is one of the many military bridges built after the Forty Five Rebellion and that carried troops across the Highlands. This was built by Major Caulfield 1752 although often called a General Wade bridge, the person who started the process many years earlier. The bridge is located just east of Braemar and this view is from eastern side of the bridge, looking upstream with the golden colours of autumn larch and silver birch. It is located on the Banks of the River Dee in the community of Crathie mid-way between the towns of Ballater and Braemar on the A93. Lochnagar, the fourth highest mountain in Britain lies to the south of the estate and its distinct shape can be seen on the horizon line.
