Aurora Borealis or Northern Lights displays photographed taken over Aberdeeshire in Scotland since 1989 covering some 350 events with arc, rays, coronas with a wide rnage of shapes and colours
Aurora Deeside ab941133jhp Aurora Borealis Scottish Northern Lights green active rays clouds April 1994 Aberdeenshire taken on the morning of the 4th April, 1994 at Crooktree, 25 miles west of Aberdeen looking to north. This photo taken at 00.15hrsUT having started showing activity from then until 00.30 but view of further activity was obscured by cloud. This was one from possibly 7 nights in a row although on the 6th April the cloud cover was so thick that no Aurora could be seen. This photo was scanned from a 35mm colour slide film, Fuji RSP11 processed for a 1600asa rating using a Nikon FM2, 28mm f2.8 lens wide open at around 20 seconds. Pictures of pyramids and scenery related to them outwith the main sites of Giza and Saqqara such as Abusir, Dashur, El Lisht, Meydum and Hawara
Abu Rawash Pyramid eg961339jhp Egyptian Rawash pyramids site view Cairo Giza Great Khafre Menkaure plateau this site is situated north west of Giza this site on high ground near the village of Abu Rawash and has the remains of a pyramid ascribed to the Pharaoh Djedefre, the successor to Khufu both of the 4th Dynasty around 2500BC. The pyramid was faced with granite and the burial chambers were set deep in the rock, in mastaba style, with evidence of a secondary pyramid, a nearby cult complex and a causeway over 1500m long leading to a valley temple in the Wadi Qarun. Heavily damaged by quarrying activities since Roman times to maybe modern Cairo buildings recent excavations are ongoing and some restoration of the site is underway. When I visited in 1996 it was difficult to get to and I was not allowed time to really explore the site. However I did get back in 2007 and was able to explore much more of the site, noticing considerable restoration especially around the Mortuary Temple and the Boat Pit. However I did get back in 2007 and was able to explore much more of the site, noticing considerable restoration especially around the Mortuary Temple and the Boat Pit. Bent Pyramid Dashur eg961329ajhp Egypt Dahshur Bent Red North Pyramids entrance high view vehicle sand desert is a famous and very distinct shape with a reduced slope created mid way up, possibly because of the need to complete the construction earlier than expected or its was structurally unsound. It is the most complete pyramid with most of its Tura limestone cladding intact, although some corners and near the top have been plundered but offer a good indicator of how the Giza pyramids would have looked when completed. Near the pyramid on its south side is a subsidiary one, badly degraded, which was found to have not been used and is felt to be too small for the King’s Queen Hetepheres. When I visited the site in 1995, the same year the military allowed tourist visits, the north entrance, there are two, was reached by climbing up the outside of the structure assisted by the helpful guide but I was unable to reach the burial chamber as I did not trust the rope ladder available. Nearby are several other pyramids of which the North or Red Pyramid also of Sneferu [Old Kingdom, 4th Dynasty c2613-2494BC] is the older, largest and most intact. NLC-over-Torphins-qax7012jhp Noctilucent clouds NLC summer night Scotland Aberdeenshire sky silver streak rare event usually occurring between latitudes 55 and 65 degrees resembling thin cirrus but most often a bluish silvery colour although orange or reddish colours from latent twilight are visible towards the horizon and are a beautiful and eerie sight, the spidery network rather like the mind filaments from Dumbledore's Pensieve in Harry Potter usually of sapphire blue, gossamer white colours from ice crystals catching the last twilight is seen around the time the brightest stars appear and their strength grows around maximum darkness, usually after midnight BST. They happen only a few times a year and need a clear cloudless night best to see them although in this photo the normal clouds are also present. This is taken looking magnetic 45 degrees from Crooktree over Torphins and 25 miles west of Aberdeen in North East Scotland, my second show in 2020 in the late evening of the 3rd July into early 4th. Taken at 23.16 UT [after midnight in BST] using a D700 Nikon DSLR with a Nikkor 50mm f1.8 at f5.6, ISO 200 for 2.5secs. It was a perfect night with no wind and very little normal cloud cover. Buchan Farmland xcv7755jhp Spring Ythsie Prop monument tower Aberdeenshire Haddo estate rolling landscape taken on a country road to Tanglandford just past the Haddo House main public entrance opposite the turnoff to Tarves at the beginning of May illustrating the gentle rolling landscape seen from many parts of northern Aberdeenshire with its modern day addition of wind turbines. The tower is the Prop of Ythsie built by workers on the Haddo Eseate in memory of the 4th Earl who did much to improve the well being of those on the estate.
