Aurora over Scotland (5 files)

Aurora Borealis or Northern Lights displays photographed taken over Aberdeeshire in Scotland since 1989 covering some 350 events with arc, rays, coronas with a wide rnage of shapes and colours
Aurora Glen Dye au61041jhp Scotland Aurora Borealis underexposed grainy rays red 645 medium format autumn 27th September 1989 taken from Heatheryhaugh just above steep climb out of Glen Dye on the road to the Cairn O’Mount and which looks across to Clachnaben, the notable hill with a tor rocky outcrop which makes it visible from much of Deeside when looking south. This photo is one of the first I took of an Aurora display using the Fuji RHP 400asa 6.4.5cm format film and it became visible just after midnight when clouds cleared and made the stars and night sky visible although the large brown patches are moving cloud. The project to photograph an Aurora came after a missed opportunity earlier in the year in March with what became known as the Big Aurora, a full Corona over Deeside. I had got the idea of trying to photograph a display following on from my success in 1986 of capturing Halley’s Comet thanks to the support of the Astronomy Ian Shepherd at the Edinburgh Observatory. I had heard about the Big Aurora but had missed the display buried away in my darkroom processing B&W photos for the local newspaper. Ian suggested I contact John MacNicol, President of the Aberdeen Astronomy Society and he eventually tipped me off about the display captured here. I photographed using Fuji RHP 400asa medium format transparency film of which this photo is an underexposed example while bracketing exposures near the 20 second mark based on my experiences with photographing the Comet and aware that exposures much longer than 20 seconds incurred the affect of star trail so instead of sharp dots for stars they became lines. In this case I used the 40mm f4 Zenzanon on my Bronica ETRS. Push processing the 400asa slide film at the lab by two stops to the equivalent of 1600asa I found that an exposure around 20 second eventually gave the best results for best colour saturation and exposure and giving the maximum control of grain without it appearing washed out from underexposure as in this case. As I shot my general landscape work using Fuji film, usually Velvia or RAP, I stayed with it for the Aurora although Kodak film was acceptable in quality and results. I felt that the Fuji film handled the reds and greens better anyway and these are in practice the primary colours of Aurora displays when oxygen is excited by the incoming electrons. Aurora Eslie Greater au61355jhp Scotland Aurora Borealis Deeside Eslie Stone Circle display Agfa film October 1989 taken from the Recumbent Stone Circle called Esslie the Greater at Eslie to the SE of Banchory overlooking Feughside and Scolty Hill. This photo is from my second Aurora display I photographed using Agfa 1000 RS 6.4.5cm format film stock using my Bronica ETRS, from memory the fastest 120 film available at the time. This gallery has photographs of the main sites North of Cairo, usually visited privately as not part of most Egyptian tours, and includes Heliopolis, Tell Basta near Zagazig and Tanis near the north coast of Egypt

A few isolated sites can be visited and this is one of the smaller municipal parks called Kom El-Dik or Dekka with some interesting and reasonably preserved Roman ruins and ongoing archaeology probably dating from 2nd C AD. The amphitheatre could accommodate 800 seated on 13 rows of grey and white marble seats and once had a domed roof, now long gone except for a few columns that once supported it. Nearby are the remains of a Roman bathhouse and nearby piscina which when I was there were still being excavated. The City has a distinctly European rather than Egyptian feel to it; it is sometimes offered as a day trip on a Cairo package but is seldom part of the main Nile packages. I hired my own taxi and the driver was sufficiently knowledgeable to take me to the main ‘ancient’ sites I could manage in a few hours. This photo is of the Railway Station “mahatit masr”, originating from the late 1850’s when the first Egyptian railway line was made to Cairo by Robert Stephenson. The original building has been refurbished after this photo was taken, part of a quick stop from the taxi as I drove around the City on a day trip. A few isolated sites can be visited and this is one is located on Rhakote Hill one of the earliest sites in the City with some Roman ruins and archaeology. On the hill is the dominant granite column called Pompey’s Pillar dating back to the reign of Emperor Diocletian around 297BC but associated with the later rival of Caesar when it was held, mistakenly, his head was placed on top of the column. Also of interest are some granite Sphinxes and underground burial vaults. It is also thought to have held some of the contents of the ancient Library after its sacking after the fall of the House of Ptolemy but nothing now remains of this smaller library probably sacked during the Fifth Century AD by Christian zealots. This photo is of the Abu al Abbas el Mursi Mosque in the Anfoushi district and the current form is from a refurbishment in 1945 by King Farouq and became the centre of Mosque Square, although built 1775 over the tomb a Spanish scholar and saint of the same name. Its current style is very much in the Arabian style popular when the Saint came to Egypt in the 13th Century. A few isolated ancient sites can be visited with some Pharaonic, Greco-Roman ruins and archaeology. The City has a distinctly European rather than Egyptian feel to it; it is sometimes offered as a day trip on a Cairo package but is seldom part of the main Nile packages. Its current style is very much in the Arabian style popular when the Saint came to Egypt in the 13th Century. The pyramid was faced with granite and the burial chambers were set deep in the rock, in mastaba style, with evidence of a secondary pyramid, a nearby cult complex and a causeway over 1500m long leading to a valley temple in the Wadi Qarun. Heavily damaged by quarrying activities since Roman times to maybe modern Cairo buildings recent excavations are ongoing and some restoration of the site is underway. When I visited in 1996 it was difficult to get to and I was not allowed time to really explore the site. However I did get back in 2007 and was able to explore much more of the site, noticing considerable restoration especially around the Mortuary Temple and the Boat Pit. Most famous for the references to the Labyrinth; a comparison of its mortuary and temple complex to that at Knossos by Herodotus although little now remains new excavations are underway to determine what might still exist. This pyramid was built after the king’s first attempt at Dashur was abandoned owing to subsidence problems. The tomb shafts adjacent to the entrance road our well constructed with smooth well finished walls and could have been for royal women rather as in Lisht and I understood from my guide that many items found were displayed in the small musuem at Karanis which has been closed since I visited it 1994. It is the most complete pyramid with most of its Tura limestone cladding intact, although some corners and near the top have been plundered but offer a good indicator of how the Giza pyramids would have looked when completed. Near the pyramid on its south side is a subsidiary one, badly degraded, which was found to have not been used and is felt to be too small for the King’s Queen Hetepheres. When I visited the site in 1995, the same year the military allowed tourist visits, the north entrance, there are two, was reached by climbing up the outside of the structure assisted by the helpful guide but I was unable to reach the burial chamber as I did not trust the rope ladder available. Nearby are several other pyramids of which the North or Red Pyramid also of Sneferu [Old Kingdom, 4th Dynasty c2613-2494BC] is the older, largest and most intact. The others of much poorer quality are from the Middle Kingdom 12th Dynasty some 600 years later. The so-called Persian Shaft was for officials of the Pharaoh, possibly Ahmose 11 c530BC, 26th Dynasty, from the First Persian period, some 2000 years after the Step Pyramid was built. Entered by a wrought iron spiral staircase down a vertical shaft of some 20-25mm depth, three tombs are entered by small horizontal shafts. One tomb that of Psamtik, a royal chief physician still has an enormous carved anthropoid sarcophagus which is empty-the lower half shaped to receive a coffin, the lid, a monolith weighing many tons is perched above it on stone built columns-the custodian suggested I climb on it to photograph the ceilings of beautifully carved hieroglyphic text from the Book of the Dead. For the purist the flash had a UV filter to minimise any unlikely damaging effect on any coloured paintings [Sanders: technical bulletin 16 1995-NPG]. Debate about stone sarcophagus made of, as larger than any of existing shafts-from memory did not feel like granite. The carving skills though were brilliant and the arched tombs covered with text awesome. In the tomb of Pediese, son of Psamtik has coloured ceilings with stars and some painted hieroglyphic text. Access I understand is now limited and is mostly closed. The most colourful period only lasts a few minutes so it is very much being in the right place at the best time but it helps having a forest or nice river scene on the doorstep but with a major mountain range to the west of Deeside, often the sun setting behind them or a large bank of rain cloud kills off the best of any last minute colour. The biggest problem with sunsets are they can take longer from the start of colourful clouds through to the more subtle final reds but every evening the shapes and nature of the clouds and light is different. Glen O Dee 9Sept97 141038jhp Banchory hospital Glen O’Dee Nordrach sanatorium granite tower closed silver birch trees in this Aberdeenshire town some 18 miles west of Aberdeen in North East Scotland on the River Dee with this photo taken in September, 1997 just before it officially closed down. The town has always been a main visitor centre either for day trippers from Aberdeen or the usual flow of coaches and other visitors heading from Aberdeen westwards along Royal Deeside to Braemar and from there south to Perth or north to Inverness. It is also offers a very scenic route southwards over the Cairn O’Mount to Mearns. The river is a famous salmon fishing water which flows from the Cairngorms eastwards into the North Sea at Aberdeen. A colourful summer display and memorial Park is passed on the left hand side after leaving the town centre, it is adjacent to the start of the Golf Course and to the south is the distinct hilline of Scolty Hill with its Memorial Tower. The Glen O’Dee was sadly burnt to the ground in 2016 owing to an act of arson by teenagers. It is promised by the current owners/developers that this beautiful building would be restored. It was to have been converted into flats having fallen into disuse as a hospital given the costs of maintenance, H&S, Fire Regulations and of course the eradication of TB generally by modern medical advances. At the time of the fire it was in a very sorry state of disrepair. Originally opened in 1900 by Dr Lawson of Banchory as one of the earliest commercial sanatorium’s and with a design based on a German model, with a central granite tower, but mainly wooden construction with all rooms facing south for the sun while at the rear were the corridors and service rooms. It treated TB patients, including w. Somerset Maugham, based upon the pine forest air and plenty of sunshine idea. It closed in 1928, was later a luxury hotel, commandeered by the Army during WW2, in 1948 the Red Cross used it for treatment of ex-servicemen and women with TB, had a short-lived revival during the 60’s Typhoid outbreak in Aberdeen and in 1955 became a convalescent home under the new NHS until it closed in 1998 when a hospital facility in modern purpose buildings was constructed. The town has always been a main visitor centre either for day trippers from Aberdeen or the usual flow of coaches and other visitors heading from Aberdeen westwards along Royal Deeside to Braemar and from there south to Perth or north to Inverness. It is also offers a very scenic route southwards over the Cairn O’Mount to Mearns. The river is a famous salmon fishing water which flows from the Cairngorms eastwards into the North Sea at Aberdeen. A colourful summer display and memorial Park is passed on the left hand side after leaving the town centre, it is adjacent to the start of the Golf Course and to the south is the distinct hilline of Scolty Hill with its Memorial Tower. The Glen O’Dee was sadly burnt to the ground in 2016 owing to an act of arson by teenagers. It is promised by the current owners/developers that this beautiful building would be restored. It was to have been converted into flats having fallen into disuse as a hospital given the costs of maintenance, H&S, Fire Regulations and of course the eradication of TB generally by modern medical advances. At the time of the fire it was in a very sorry state of disrepair. There is a complete and relatively easy walk round the loch and in the distance is the Royal Lodge of Glas-alt-shiel surrounded by forest. The highest peak in the distance is the Broad Cairn.
