This photo was taken at 01.30hrsUT having shown hints of an arc throughout the evening with activity starting at 00.55 with a ray which continued with rays until around 00.15hrsUT on the morning of the 13th March. There were very faint rays the following night around mid-night. This photo was scanned from a 35mm colour slide film, Fuji RSP processed for a 1600asa rating using a Nikon FM2, 28mm f2.8 lens wide open at around 20 seconds. Urban Aurora au7409jhp Scottish Aurora Borealis blue nitrogen two houses bathroom lights funny folding arc horseshoe moonlight Deeside taken in Banchory itself and was active between 1.30 and 2am on the 11th April, 1990. This display was an hour or so after an earlier display which I photographed at The Neuk between 10.40 and 11.30pm on the 10th. This display developed from pulsating patches of light which I noticed from my house on Station Road next to the East Church Manse around 1 to 1.15am BST and which developed into a full blown arc with very strong rays. What cannot be recorded is the amount of movement of the rays especially when tracking right to left but here creates the curtain like effect with the arc folding to create a horseshoe shape. In the photos the blue colour is of lower level nitrogen gas excitation and with a hint of purple towards the end of the display as against the more common occurrence of red and green oxygen gas. Some of the colour is muted as there was a full moon, the light of which is evident in the brightness of the houses as well as the colour from tungsten lamps from street lights. Of humorous interest is the appearance on bathroom lights while I was photographing in two adjacent houses and neither of the occupants knew a display was underway when I enquired afterwards. I have already added other photos taken using Fuji RSP11 35mm slide film rated at 1600asa and developed in this case at my local Lab in Aberdeen for 1600asa-pushed 2 stops. They were exposed around 20secs which from experience I had settled on as about the best combination of film, exposure time and with a 28mm or 24mm f2.8 wide angle lens so these are much brighter and more colour saturated although slightly more visual than would be seen with the human eye. It is probably the most vibrant of all the Egyptian centres street shopping centres as it caters not for the tourist and is always busy all day and as in this photo during the cool of the evening and it runs adjacent to the main River Nile waterfront for a mile or so. Photographs in this gallery show daily life along the River Nile mainly from the cruises I have undertaken over the past 10 years or so. Sites that border the Nile are included although the major temples visted have their own dedicated sites such as Edfu and Kom Ombo. One of the enjoyments of the Nile cruise is the tranquility of watching 'life go by' usually characterised by the friendliness of those you pass whether boatmen or farm workers as well as seeing wild birds close at hand. The other aspect is the service on the cruiseboats from friendly crews and the chance to relax after hectic and often crowded temple visits.
Rock Cut Work Silsila EG052409JHP Egypt Egyptian Ancient Silsila Quarry River Nile Shrines Rock Cut stands out sharply as the river narrows at the cult location north of Aswan and a well known marker for the Nile cruises as one nears or leaves the ancient marshland known as the Kom Ombo Basin. Nearby the distinctive large rock a remnant of the ancient quarrying are three riverside shrines of Merneptah, Ramasses 11 and Sety 1 although the later and the landing berth have been badly damaged by earthquakes many centuries ago. Once a thriving herring fishing port it is now a quiet town catering more to tourism with an excellent golf course at Duff House and has several sandy beaches. It is reckoned to be on of the driest and sunniest locations is Scotland. Deeside Sunset Rays bnm7409jhp Deeside Scottish summer evening suns rays clouds fields hilline Aberdeenshire Kincardine O’Neil is some 25 miles west of Aberdeen in North East Scotland. The most dramatic and vibrant period only lasts a few minutes so it is very much being in the right place at the best time but it helps having a forest or nice river scene on the doorstep but with a major mountain range to the west of Deeside, often the sun setting behind them or a large bank of rain cloud kills off the best of any last minute colour. The biggest problem with summer sunsets are they can take longer from the start of colourful clouds through to the more subtle final reds and in that time you are an open meal ticket for the notorious Scottish midges but every evening the shapes and nature of the clouds and light is different. In the great hall is the Horn of Leys, supposedly a symbol of this grant. The tower house is one of the finest examples of the period and some of the original wall paintings still survive. Slains Castle up704409jhp Slains Castle Ruin Tower cliff edge sea Aberdeenshire Cirrus Streaking Clouds is a ruined mansion rather than true castle erected in 1597 by the Earl of Erroll now lies as a ruin on the cliffs just north of Cruden Bay although recent planning permission has been passed for it to be developed as apartments. It is famous as a possible inspirational location for the Dracula story written by Bram Stoker during one of his holidays to Cruden Bay. Corse Castle Snow wyy4098jhp Corse Castle Aberdeenshire Scottish Winter Snow Photograph Mar Roadside is located off B9119 Tarland road-take O’Neil Corse turnoff for a few hundred yards and is best viewed from road as very overgrown with stinging nettles and is not in good structural condition for exploring. Photographs show NW tower but basic structure is a shell with SE tower beyond. Still in Forbes family, probably built around late 1580’s by Patrick Forbes, Bishop of Aberdeen from 1564-1663. Fairly traditional Z-Plan tower-house of the area and in a state unlikely to be restored. Given that nearby Craigievar Castle is closed during 2008/9 for restoration this might fill a gap as part of the same family and very much in their historical area of Aberdeenshire. Loch Muick to4300409jhp Loch Muick view silver birch trees Scotland autumn Glas-allt-Shiel waterfall track this high view above the Royal Lodge looking down the Loch on the western shore of to the south of Ballater in Aberdeenshire North East Scotland. There is a complete and relatively easy walk round the loch and in this case passing the Royal Lodge of Glas-alt-shiel surrounded by forest with the highest peak of the Broad Cairn reached by walking up to and past the huge cliff face of the Dubh Loch. Passing behind the Lodge you join the path up to the waterfall and which is another route to reach the plateau surrounding Lochnagar. It is another enjoyable walk returning to the south of the Lodge and skirting round the top of Loch Muick, returning to the Spital Carpark via the Blackburn.
