Aurora over Scotland (17 files)

Aurora Borealis or Northern Lights displays photographed taken over Aberdeeshire in Scotland since 1989 covering some 350 events with arc, rays, coronas with a wide rnage of shapes and colours
Aurora Red Corona aucf13609jhp Aurora Borealis Scottish Corona display red wings forest silhouette Aberdeenshire Deeside photographed over Ord Fundlie forest near Kincardine O'Neil on Royal Deeside west of Aberdeen and unusually this started around 16.00 hours as a major storm on 20th November 2003, 25 miles west of Aberdeen. In hindsight this was to be one of the last major storms I witnessed on Deeside to date, 2018 and it continued all evening with a sequence of later photos taken over the Tomnaverie Recumbent Stone Circle near Tarland from 22.00 hrs until after midnight. I had to leave Crooktree at 18.30 to teach at Aboyne where my photography students got dragged out to witness the continuing display. This digital photo was taken at 17.45.56hrsUT for 19secs and these cf136 digital photos were taken at 100ISO, which was probably a mistake, but later in the cf137 it set at 800ISO possibly as I felt the power justified going for a finer noise level to my usual 1600ISO. The faint CCD bars suggest even with the long exposure this photo was underexposed. Photos were taken with both digital and slide film and the first slide film photos started at around 17.40hrsUT. The magnetometer on site showed vigorous activity from 15.30hrs. This digital photo was taken with a Fujifilm Finepix Digital S2Pro camera using a Sigma 15mm f2.8 fisheye lens, giving a fairly undistorted wide angle image, wide open aperture with most exposures manually near the 20 seconds mark which experience suggested was around the best exposure for the low light Aurora displays. These were digital recordings taken during 2003 when the quality of digital cameras had at last matched 35mm slide film standards and the noise factor was superior to the grain created pushing 400asa slide film to 1600asa. This sequence is later in the display starting around 11.30 when the display grew in strength and the colour red for higher level oxygen came to the fore. Aurora Corona ab0055jhp Aurora Corona Red Oxygen Zenith explosion rays Spring Aberdeenshire Scotland taken at 23.25 hours UT on the 6th April, 2000 over Deeside some 25 miles west of Aberdeen. This event is the most major scale of display visible for as the display starts to develop and increase in power it passes southwards creating a moving zenith overhead giving the impression of looking underneath a huge crown often with multiple colours. The shape at the zenith from which rays drop to all the horizons in a 360 degree sweep can create weird shapes which are changing rapidly around the central vortex. This level of display is rare in the UK because the power levels need to be huge and are caused mainly by a CME, Coronal Mass Ejection from the Sun’s surface with the eruption aimed directly at the Earth. It is unusual for the more common Solar Wind generated displays to reach the UK let along push as far south as the Channel although sometimes they can be combined with a direct CME hit and cause large and colourful events. So far this summer, 2018, there have not been many colourful sunsets despite some of the warmest weather for many a year, this one in May was only bettered by the next sequence taken in July. The most dramatic and vibrant period only lasts a few minutes so it is very much being in the right place at the best time but it helps having a forest or nice river scene on the doorstep but with a major mountain range to the west of Deeside, often the sun setting behind them or a large bank of rain cloud kills off the best of any last minute colour. The biggest problem with summer sunsets are they can take longer from the start of colourful clouds through to the more subtle final reds and in that time you are an open meal ticket for the notorious Scottish midges but every evening the shapes and nature of the clouds and light is different. After leaving the main Insch Road [B992] there is a straight followed by a curve to the right round the edge of Cothiemuir Wood. Adjacent to a field looking back to Keig there is enough room to pull off the road on the verge, cross the road and there is an obvious footpath up through the many mature trees and up a gradual slope. The walk into the stone circle takes about five minutes following the footpath which meanders through the trees and past some of the Natural Burial area plots. This is a Historic Scotland protected site, it is not signed and there is no access for wheelchairs. It is accessible by a public track after a steep climb from a signed layby and passes a farm house and outbuildings. This was the year after it was opened to the public after restoration and safety work has been carried and there was still some scaffolding standing on the south boundary wall. These photos were taken on the 20th September, 2008 on which a cloudy start turned into some glorious sunshine, blue skies and interesting clouds so made the walk up worthwhile. This is a National Trust for Scotland property situated about 15 miles west of Aberdeen and is open to the public all the year round. This building dates from the 16th century although the land belonged to the Burnett’s of Leys as a gift from Robert the Bruce in 1323. In the great hall is the Horn of Leys, supposedly a symbol of this grant. The tower house is one of the finest examples of the period and some of the original wall paintings still survive.
