Aurora over Scotland (3 files)

Aurora Borealis or Northern Lights displays photographed taken over Aberdeeshire in Scotland since 1989 covering some 350 events with arc, rays, coronas with a wide rnage of shapes and colours
Aurora The Neuk au718321jhp British Aurora Borealis Neuk haystack clouds lights summer nitrogen purple rays 1990 taken on the Harestone Road from the small pull off at The Neuk Farm which the local farmer used as an area to dump his old hayrake and a few bales of straw. Taken on the 20th August at 02.01 hrs BST is one of the many displays in early 1990, a decade which proved to be an extremely productive one for Aurora displays and photography. I have already added other photos taken using Fuji RSP11 35mm slide film rated at 1600asa and developed in this case at my local Lab in Aberdeen for 1600asa-pushed 2 stops however this particular film was Fuji P1600 which for a short time was their fastest slide film. They were exposed around 20secs which from experience I had settled on as about the best combination of film, exposure time and with a 28mm or 24mm f2.8 wide angle lens so these are much brighter and more colour saturated although slightly more visual than would be seen with the human eye. What cannot be recorded is the amount of movement of the rays especially when tracking right to left. In these photos there is the purple of nitrogen gas being excited as against the more common occurrence of red and green oxygen gas and probably also a function of the lighter light levels given these were taken in August. Aurora Deeside jkl8321jhp Merry Dancers Northern Lights winter Scottish green red rays display Deeside taken on the 27th February, 2014 at Crooktree, 25 miles west of Aberdeen is the first display I have seen this year and the best for several years since the end of the previous Solar Cycle in 2006 although initial forecasts did not suggest a display of this strength was likely over the UK from a glancing CME. It was in fact observed and photographed as far south as Essex in England. It’s most active phase of the evening’s display was over around 20.30 including a fairly rare occurrence of a folded arc, more common in the most northern regions. This photograph was taken with a Nikon D700 full frame DSLR using a 28mm Nikkor f2.8 lens at f4 and ISO settings of 3200 allowing for much shorter exposure times e.g. circa 15 sec average times with hopefully more accurate recordings of these moving events. The first activity photographed of this display was about 19.50, looking west of North to the west of Torphins, this one was around 21.50 looking west and was after the arc has disappeared and the ray activity continued to the North with red high level oxygen gas colour started to appear more noticeable and a general dying off of the overall strength of the display. This phase sees more individual rays, green towards the northern centre with red rays to the western edges as seen in those with the large trees on the left. The Pleiades Star Constellation is visible in those with the strong red ray on the left. It has a notable rare representation of the famous Cleopatra, some beautiful carvings and is relatively unscathed by the ravages of time, desecration and being dismantled for building materials. Looking across the remains of the Coptic Basilica to the top of the Roman Mammisi. Kom Ombo EG204321jhp Kom Ombo Temple Egypt cleaning restoring umbrella conservation painted reliefs of this beautiful ruined temple just north of Aswan and a regular visit on all Nile Cruises, was principally built by Ptolemy V of Silsilah sandstone. Dedicated to two Gods – Sobek, the crocodile and Horus, the falcon and although it has been damaged over the years, mainly through slipping into the River Nile and some structural damage owing to earthquakes, there are still some wonderful colourful reliefs of the most detailed and delicate style. This trip was special for me in that I got special permission to climb up the back of the temple on the hill behind and match a view I had on a Victorian albumen print; the local Police Chief had to be involved and thanks to a good Kuoni Guide he agreed for me to be accompanied by a policemen as security was still a big thing after the 1997 attacks at Luxor. Unfortunately in the excitement I had forgot to adjust my ASA rating for Velvia and took the photos based on 400ASA-the film maws later pushed to 200asa so there is some increase in grain structure, not a feature of Velvia generally. On this visit some cleaning and restoration was being done to the many painted bas reliefs on the columns-hence the scaffolding and the sun umbrella but the bonus was the reliefs looked particularly vibrant. The time of day also meant some of the museum blocks with deep cut carvings were ideal to photograph as the shadows gave greater emphasis to the excellent cut marks of some iconic hieroglyphic symbols. Deir el-Medina EG075108jhp Deir al-Medina Luxor Ancient Egyptian rock tombs 292 321 cliff face is located on the West Bank of the River Nile at Luxor lies to the west of Qurnet Murai hill and is the location of a workman's village with the remains of houses, streets, temples and chapels. The workers are known for their work in the Valley tombs which they reached walking over the Theban plateau. Most photographs show the streets, houses, interior with domestic bowls and grinding querns and others a general overview of the village with its tombs and rock tombs to the North West corner. There are also some exquisitely decorated underground tombs of which a couple are included in the entrance ticket. Tanis was once held to be the capital created by Ramses, now thought to be in the Quantir area but it was the capital of the 24th Nome of Lower Egypt and important in the late Egyptian period. The site has a Ramesside Temple of Amun with other temples from reigns of Osorkon, Sheshonq and Ptolemy. A visit to Tanis is usually by private means but can be incorporated with a day trip through the Delta visiting Heliopolis and Tell Basta but does involve considerable motoring. Peterculter Flowers zxc4321jhp Peterculter Aberdeen floral flower displays NDR Millside Street Scotland Culter Den located just off A93 North Deeside Road on Malcolm Road in Peterculter within the boundaries of the City of Aberdeen. The track of the old Deeside Railway line from Aberdeen to Ballater, cut in the Beeching days, but is now part of the Deeside Way a public walk way which is nearly complete from the City to Ballater. Below this viewpoint heading west over a bridge is the famous statue of Rob Roy who is supposed to have leapt the Culter Burn from its rocky gorge cliffs and directly across down Millside Street is new housing scheme where once the Culter Papermill used to be located. The floral displays are part of the extensive colourful displays that have won the City another Best of Britain Award in 2014. Blackbird Sunningl zxc3212jhp Blackbird sunning spread wings dyke sunny Deeside Scotland summer photograph taken with a telephoto lens through the kitchen window as this female blackbird undertakes a practice attributed to them in summer days in strong sunlight. Despite research the general theory is that of maintaining its feathers possibly stimulating the Vitamin D produced in its preen-oil gland or maybe regulating its temperature on hot days. I have seen sparrows also doing a similar thing but on the ground, especially if it is sandy and wondered if it might be to do with cleaning away mites, as part of the sand bath activity-hen pheasants also seem to like this and often create their own sand bowl for regular use. In the great hall is the Horn of Leys, supposedly a symbol of this grant. The tower house is one of the finest examples of the period and some of the original wall paintings still survive. Esslemont Castle qwe3321jhp Esslemont Castle ruin Ellon Aberdeenshire Buchan Scottish fort tower photograph of this 16th century tower house, viewed from public highway, built on earlier 14th Century site of the Mareschal’s and then passed to the Cheynes of Straloch through marriage. Was destroyed during feud between the Cheynes and Hays in 1493 and later rebuilt. Later owned by Earls of Errol but lost during Reformation conflicts. Later sold in 1728 to Robert Gordon and abandoned in 1769 in favour of a new Esslemont House built nearby. In a very ruined state and best viewed from the A920 just south of Ellon. Ruins in the photograph are from a 16th century castellated round tower of a large mansion house. Area to NW of these ruins was excavated in 1938 by Douglas Simpson and substantial evidence of a large and strong L shaped tower house with pink dressed granite foundations and is considered to be the remains of original castle. Started in the Late 13th century during the reign of King James with later additions during the mid 1500’s, it held a commanding position at the meeting of several Glens and a strategic position that kept it in use until abandonment in 1720. A quadrangular curtain wall of great proportion still remains as does some of a deep vertically side surrounding ditch which were all part of its substantial defences.
