Aurora Borealis or Northern Lights displays photographed taken over Aberdeeshire in Scotland since 1989 covering some 350 events with arc, rays, coronas with a wide rnage of shapes and colours
Deeside Aurora au911436ajhp Aurora Borealis Scotland October 1991 Proton burst corona zenith rays treetops pink red green Inchmarlo Deeside Aberdeenshire taken in the early morning around 00.45hrs BST on 2nd October 1991 at Inchmarlo near Banchory, 18 miles west of Aberdeen looking to the north. An active display and this photo was one of three taken on a journey back from delivering prints for the Deeside Piper in Banchory. This session was a continuation of activity during the evening/night of the 1st October which had started around 21.00hrs BST. I had spotted activity over Torphins and the Hill of Fare on the way to Banchory via Sluie where I saw rays above the forest. Returning from Banchory I saw a strong single beam or ray going straight up over Inchmarlo so pulled off the road at the rough layby just by the speed zone west of Inchmarlo beyond the Craiglash Road. Suddenly this large coronal zenith appeared, swirling around the vortex and lasted long enough for me to take the last three exposures left on the film and then it faded as quickly as it appeared. It has been suggested as being a proton burst which would relate to the single large beam that preceded it. Later activity was photographed after I returned to Crooktree around 01.00hrs BST. This photo was scanned from a 35mm colour slide film, Fuji RSP11 processed for a 1600asa rating using a Nikon FM2 and usually 28mm f2.8 lens wide open at around 20 seconds. The display was a major storm almost from the start, visible around 11pm and I used my ‘cheap’ fisheye lens, a door security viewer attached to the sunhood on my 28mm by a machined cap. Not of course ideal quality but gives a sense of the scale of the display and especially if viewed seeing the smallness of The Plough. This sequence is later in the display starting around 11.30 when the display grew in strength and the colour red for higher level oxygen came to the fore. An earlier sequence with more green dominance has yet to be scanned. Aswan Nubian Museum Skeleton EG052935JHP Aswan Egyptian Nubian Museum grave and skeleton dating to prehistory around 35-3000BC and found at Kubanieh, the 2nd Cataract on the River nIle at Aswan. Semi Nomadic tribe buring dead in oval/rectangular pits of a stone structure and including burial goods just as peronal ornaments made of ivory, faience, bone; shells and coloured stones. An exhibit in this modern building whose foundations were laid in 1986, opened in 1997 and organised through UNESCO. Very low artificial light makes general photography difficult as well as affecting accurate colour balance. This now appears to be the only museum in Egypt where photography is still allowed although it is not easy as the ambient lighting is extremely subdued for conservation reasons. Royalty Free photos of exhibits from the Cairo Egyptian Museum taken before current bans with slide film in available light not to studio quality
Tut 2nd Shrine Detail EG012610JHP Egyptian Museum Exhibit second shrine Tutankhamun tomb interior photograph in the prime antiquities collection in Cairo taken during visits between 1994 and 1996 when photography was allowed albeit without flash and tripod. None is of studio quality, being handheld with existing, usually extremely poor light and using slide film, pushed Fuji 400asa to get a suitable aperture and shutter speed. Most of the photos are from the Tutankahum exhibits while the rest are items that interested me as I explored this wonderful and extensive collection, requiring many more hours if not days and is only hinted at during the usual one or two hour visit made on a package tour. This gallery contains pictures of the two main sites usually visited together on a day trip south of Cairo - Saqqara with the famous Step Pyramid, a huge necropolis with many tombs and other pyramids and Memphis, the ancient capital of Egypt now will an open air museum with the alabaster sphinx and the huge partial statue of Ramasses 11.

The inside is now not accessible but is one of the easiest to enter and entry by Gaston Maspero was financed by Thomas Cook & Co where a highly decorated burial chamber covered in Pyramid Texts was uncovered along with a huge basalt sarcophagus. This is the remains of the demolished tomb of Hotepsekhemwy, first ruler of the 2nd Dynasty and leads to a warren of rock cut chambers but not accessible to the public. Deeside NLC qax2491jhp Noctilucent clouds NLC summer night sky thinning July Scotland Torphins Aberdeenshire blue network rare event usually occurring between latitudes 55 and 65 degrees resembling thin cirrus but most often a bluish silvery colour although orange or reddish colours from latent twilight are visible towards the horizon and are a beautiful and eerie sight, the spidery network rather like the mind filaments from Dumbledore's Pensieve in Harry Potter usually of sapphire blue, gossamer white colours from ice crystals catching the last twilight is seen around the time the brightest stars appear and their strength grows around maximum darkness, usually after midnight BST. NLC Torphins bnm7914jhp Noctilucent clouds cumulus dark NLC summer night Scottish Aberdeenshire sky blue network rare event usually occurring between latitudes 55 and 65 degrees resembling thin cirrus but most often a bluish silvery colour although orange or reddish colours from latent twilight are visible towards the horizon and are a beautiful and eerie sight, the spidery network rather like the mind filaments from Dumbledore's Pensieve in Harry Potter usually of sapphire blue, gossamer white colours from ice crystals catching the last twilight is seen around the time the brightest stars appear and their strength grows around maximum darkness, usually after midnight BST. They happen only a few times a year and need a clear cloudless night best to see them although in this photo the normal clouds are also present. This is taken looking magnetic 45 degrees from Crooktree over Torphins and 25 miles west of Aberdeen in North East Scotland, my second show in 2017 in the late evening of the 2nd July into early 3rd. Taken at 23.35 UT [after midnight in BST] using a D700 Nikon DSLR with Tokina SD28-70 lens at f5.6, 2.5 second exposure at ISO500. It was a perfect night with no wind and very little normal cloud cover. The photos over the house were taken with a Nikkor 24mm f2.8 at f8. Lochnagar-Queens-View-qax8055jhp Queen’s View Tillylodge Lochnagar mountain cloud cover Deeside Scotland Aberdeenshire viewpoint at the Deeside Field Club marker pointing out the alignment of all the hills visible from the viewpoint is on the road out of Tarland heading north and ultimately takes you east to Aberdeen in North east Scotland. The central outline is of the mountain called Lochnagar, fourth highest in Britain. Claimed as a favourite viewpoint of Royal Deeside for Queen Victoria and hence it being called the Queens View. In the centre of this photograph is the hill with the Bronze Age Tomnaverie Recumbent Stone Circle built on it.
