Aurora Borealis or Northern Lights displays photographed taken over Aberdeeshire in Scotland since 1989 covering some 350 events with arc, rays, coronas with a wide rnage of shapes and colours
Aurora The Neuk au72926ajhp Scotland Aurora Borealis Neuk hayrake Cassiopeia stars Deeside spring 1990 taken on the Harestone Road from the small pull off at The Neuk Farm which the local farmer used as an area to dump his old hayrake and a few bales of straw. Taken on the 27th March at 23.55hrs UT is one of the many displays in early 1990, a decade which proved to be an extremely productive one for Aurora displays and photography. I have already added other photos taken using Fuji RSP11 35mm slide film rated at 1600asa and developed in this case at my local Lab in Aberdeen for 1600asa-pushed 2 stops. They were exposed around 20secs which from experience I had settled on as about the best combination of film, exposure time and with a 28mm or 24mm f2.8 wide angle lens so these are much brighter and more colour saturated although slightly more visual than would be seen with the human eye. What cannot be recorded is the amount of movement of the rays especially when tracking right to left. Aurora Deeside jkl8292jhp Aurora Borealis Scottish display greenred pink rays arc Aberdeenshire taken on the 27th February, 2014 at Crooktree, 25 miles west of Aberdeen is the first display I have seen this year and the best for several years since the end of the previous Solar Cycle in 2006 although initial forecasts did not suggest a display of this strength was likely over the UK from a glancing CME. It was in fact observed and photographed as far south as Essex in England. This photo and those up to the cottage roof view where taken between 20.15 and 20.35 and give an idea of how active and varied a display can be in such a short time. It was also the most active phase of the evenings display including a fairly rare occurrence of a folded arc, more common in the most northern regions. This photograph was taken with a Nikon D700 full frame DSLR using a 24mm Nikkor f2.8 lens at f4 and ISO settings of 6400 allowing for much shorter exposure times e.g. circa 10 sec average times with hopefully more accurate recordings of these moving events. The first activity photographed of this display was about 19.50, looking west of North to the west of Torphins. Aswan Nubian Museum Coffin EG052921JHP Aswan Egyptian Nubian Museum Golden Coffin of bearded priest Wennefer an exhibit inside this modern building whose foundations were laid in 1986, opened in 1997 and organised through UNESCO. Very low artificial light makes general photography difficult as well as affecting accurate colour balance. This now appears to be the only museum in Egypt where photography is still allowed although it is not easy as the ambient lighting is extremely subdued for conservation reasons. Deir el-Medina EG075108jhp Deir al-Medina Luxor Ancient Egyptian rock tombs 292 321 cliff face is located on the West Bank of the River Nile at Luxor lies to the west of Qurnet Murai hill and is the location of a workman's village with the remains of houses, streets, temples and chapels. The workers are known for their work in the Valley tombs which they reached walking over the Theban plateau. Most photographs show the streets, houses, interior with domestic bowls and grinding querns and others a general overview of the village with its tombs and rock tombs to the North West corner. There are also some exquisitely decorated underground tombs of which a couple are included in the entrance ticket. Looking up into the ceiling of the Hypostyle Hall, its lintels and the papyriform painted open bell shaped capitals still showing original colour. Know as the Craigton road leaving Kincardine O’Neil at Neil Burn Drive by the War Memorial, crosses over Craigton Hill to drops down to Torphins joining the B993 Kincardine Road at the village near Waulkmill. NLC Crooktree zxc2927jhp Noctilucent clouds slivery blue electric filaments NLC Scottish westerly night sky photo blue network rare event usually occurring between latitudes 55 and 65 degrees resembling thin cirrus but most often a bluish silvery colour although orange or reddish colours and are a beautiful and eerie sight, the spidery network rather like the mind filaments from Dumbeldore's Pensive in Harry Potter usually of sapphire blue, gossamer white or occasionally red colours from ice crystals catching the last twilight is seen around the time the brightest stars appear and their strength grows around maximum darkness, usually after midnight BST. They happen only a few times a year and need a clear cloudless night best to see them although in this photo the normal clouds are also present. This is taken looking magnetic 45 degrees from Crooktree over Torphins and 25 miles west of Aberdeen in North East Scotland, the early show of the morning of 8th July, 2014. Taken at 00.15 UT [after 1am in BST] using a D700 Nikon DSLR with Tokina SD 28-70mm lens at f5.6, 4 second exposure at ISO500. NLC Crooktree zxc2923jhp Noctilucent clouds closeup details waves NLC zoomed Scottish sky blue network rare event usually occurring between latitudes 55 and 65 degrees resembling thin cirrus but most often a bluish silvery colour although orange or reddish colours and are a beautiful and eerie sight, the spidery network rather like the mind filaments from Dumbeldore's Pensive in Harry Potter usually of sapphire blue, gossamer white or occasionally red colours from ice crystals catching the last twilight is seen around the time the brightest stars appear and their strength grows around maximum darkness, usually after midnight BST. They happen only a few times a year and need a clear cloudless night best to see them although in this photo the normal clouds are also present. This is taken looking magnetic 45 degrees from Crooktree over Torphins and 25 miles west of Aberdeen in North East Scotland, the early show of the morning of 8th July, 2014. Taken at 00.13 UT [after 1am in BST] using a D700 Nikon DSLR with Tokina SD 28-70mm lens at f5.6, 2 second exposure at ISO500. Often the shapes and range and vibrancy of the colours defies descriptions and can only be seen to be believed; my experience is that this phase only lasts for at most 20 minutes so it is often being in the right place at the right time and best photographed using a tripod as the light levels mean longer exposures especially at best quality ISO settings. Auchindoir Church asd7292jhp St Mary's Church Auchindoir medieval carved door summer Scotland Aberdeenshire tombstones ruin romantic is reached by taking first left turning after Lumsden on road to Rhynie and Huntly in North East Aberdeenshire near Morayshire. This is the entrance approach to the ruin through the array of old tombstones and entering the church by this beautiful carved medieval door. This 13th Century building was later remodelled in 16th century, with a fine elaborately carved and detailed Scottish medieval door and inside it has a very beautiful sacrament house on the inside, styled like a monstrance and inserted in a lancet window - now covered by clear roof to protect it. The backdrop is the spectacular Craig Burn Den or gorge with large woodland of mature beech trees. A marked clifftop trail makes the journey between Covesea and Hopetown easier with some spectacular views and plenty of marine birdlife. Along this stretch of the coast is a cave called the Sculptors Cave with Pictish carvings showing the ancient attraction of this coastline reinforced with the importance of nearby Burghead, the site of a major Pictish fort and harbour. Quoich Braemar 191292jhp Quoich Punch Bowl Water hole swirling rocks gorge Deeside Glen Scotland is located east of the Linn of Dee on the North side of the River Dee west of Braemar. Passing another even more spectacular gorge at the Linn of Dee west of Braemar as the road goes deeper into Glen Dee and the Linn is a popular visiting place because of the dangerous and spectacular nature of the river crashing though this narrow cleft in the granite rocks. A public carpark nearby is ideal parking for walkers heading north into the Cairngorms or westwards past the Chest of Dee into Glen Tilt and on to Blair Atholl. From the Linn it is a slightly longer drive taking the metalled road to its end at the Quoich past the back of Mar Lodge to a new National Trust carpark and the main starting point for walks to Beinn A’Bhuird and beyond. Meikle Pap Snow 2925186jhp Snow Winter Lochnagar Cairngorms covered rocks icy shapes Meikle Pap Scotland Aberdeenshire Photo taken from the Meikle Pap across the lochan and corrie of the fourth highest mountain in Britain in North East Scotland to the south of Ballater and the River Dee with the distant Cairngorm Range in the background. On approaching the saddle above the lochan and looking across at the summit of the mountain range, the Meikle Pap is small climb to the right and does give useful views across the whole front of the mountain and the opportunity from its boulder scree field for foreground interest to create a sense of 3 dimensional depth. This point is an approximate 2-2.5 hour’s walk from the carpark on well defined track to the Fox’s Well and thereafter a conservation constructed pathway.
