Luxor West Bank EG96720812jhp Egypt Luxor West Bank Qurna River Nile dates Hatshepsut crops green taken in 1994 so from near the ferry crossing at Qurna al-Gaddah which was the option in those days from getting across the Nile looking across this fertile plain to the Theban Hills and in the direction of Hatshepsut Temple. Today the preferred method for package tours for crossing the River Nile is by the new southern road bridge and then heading north and westwards towards the main ancient sites of the West Bank. The scene is also a reminder of the wealth that was the engine that created ancient Egypt because of the fertility bordering the River Nile caused by the annual inundations with the flood waters depositing fertile mud giving abundant food sufficient to feed the large transient labour force required to build these huge monuments from Giza, Memphis, Thebes and southwards to Abu Simbel. Today fertilisation of the river farmland is by artificial means and of course has an impact on the Egyptian import bills. Apart from being in excellent condition generally, the second court offers some breathtaking coloured reliefs ironically preserved under the white wash applied during the Christian era and the temple was used as a church. Not included in most standard tour packages, this temple is worth the effort to be visited privately. Has Ramesside Temple of Amun with other temples from reigns of Osorkon, Sheshonq and Ptolemy but of special interest are the Royal Tombs where that of Psusennes in particular was intact and gave up one of the richest burial good collections, apart from Tutankhamun, with its famous silver coffin, now in the Cairo Museum. A visit to Tanis is usually by private means but can be incorporated with a day trip through the Delta visiting Heliopolis and Tell Basta but does involve considerable motoring. Photographs in this gallery show daily life along the River Nile mainly from the cruises I have undertaken over the past 10 years or so. Sites that border the Nile are included although the major temples visted have their own dedicated sites such as Edfu and Kom Ombo. One of the enjoyments of the Nile cruise is the tranquility of watching 'life go by' usually characterised by the friendliness of those you pass whether boatmen or farm workers as well as seeing wild birds close at hand. The other aspect is the service on the cruiseboats from friendly crews and the chance to relax after hectic and often crowded temple visits.

During 2005 I experienced the busiest time on the Nile I had seen with convoys of cruiseboats and this photo is taken at Esna Lock where there was a delay for several hours waiting to make progress southwards. Probably in 2012 following the marked drop off in tourism following the Arab Spring and subsequent political problems scenes like this will not be happening. This photo was taken in 2005 and will not represent the current situation with a huge drop in tourist numbers because of the Arab Spring and its aftermath. The traders made the most of the delays and stopped cruiseboats to throw their wares up to passengers, mainly galabeas, cotton goods and carpets with much interest and humour at the normal shouted haggling process. For those after serious galabeas then a better bet for quality and value for money was to wait for Edfu and even the souks of Aswan, although the process of dealing with traders helped pass the time waiting, could be several hours, to get through the lock to continue the journey south. Todhead Coastline jkl8208jhp Todhead headland sea waves crashing rocks reflections sun cliffs Mearns Aberdeenshire Scotland located south of Catterline is the former Todhead Lighthouse on the North east coast of Aberdeenshire south of Stonehaven standing pudding stone cliffs. The cliffs stick out on a small headland but with sheer drops into the North Sea but offering spectacular views of the sea pounding on the rocks below and views northwards along the coast from Braidon Bay and to the distant Forley Craig beyond Catterline, famous for its seafood restaurant. The lighthouse was built in 1897 by D.A. Stevenson and is still a stylish if sad reminder of the heyday of Victorian Maritime heritage. Its short ‘dumpy’ tower hides a shaft dug into the cliffs underneath which allowed the original clockwork mechanism to operate as described in Jane Geddes’s Deeside and Mearns Architectural Guide. Comet-Neowise-with-Plough-qax7208jhp Comet Neowise Ursa Major Plough Big Dipper summer northwards Scottish July Deeside night sky rare event usually occurring between latitudes 55 and 65 degrees resembling thin cirrus but most often a bluish silvery colour although orange or reddish colours from latent twilight are visible towards the horizon and are a beautiful and eerie sight, the spidery network rather like the mind filaments from Dumbledore's Pensieve in Harry Potter usually of sapphire blue, gossamer white colours from ice crystals catching the last twilight is seen around the time the brightest stars appear and their strength grows around maximum darkness, usually after midnight BST. They happen only a few times a year and need a clear cloudless night best to see them as was the conditions on this evening. This is taken looking magnetic 330 degrees from Crooktree Northwards with the Comet nearly centre, the Plough was off to the upper left and the NLC eastwards on the lower right and 25 miles west of Aberdeen in North East Scotland. Taken at 23.23UT [after midnight in BST] on 18th July 2020 using a D700 Nikon DSLR with a Tokina SD 28mm at f4, ISO 640 for 5sec. Often the shapes and range and vibrancy of the colours defies descriptions and can only be seen to be believed; my experience is that this phase only lasts for at most 20 minutes so it is often being in the right place at the right time. At the bottom of the walled garden overlooking the path between the June Borders is a Doocot an attractive feature and useful high point for looking up the June Border with the Castle as its impressive backdrop. Burn O Vat Dinnet TO18208jhp Burn O’Vat gorge pothole Dinnet forest entrance path approach colour Royal Deeside Aberdeenshire Scotland is reached after Loch Kinord on the North Deeside Road from Aberdeen westwards to Braemar after the town of Aboyne and before reaching Ballater at the right hand turner off marked Huntly and is part of this SSSI area with a visitor centre, carpark and public toilets. Claims this was a hideout for outlaws, namely Patrick Gilroy Macgregor, an early relative of Rob Roy, who operated in the Deeside Area.
