Aurora Borealis display Scotland February 1992 display red rays trees green Deeside Aberdeenshire taken on the 24th February, 1992 at Crooktree, 25 miles west of Aberdeen looking mainly north from the cottage over a gean tree which is aligned to magnetic North. The display started with a strong arc around 20.30 until I closed down around 1am on the morning of the 25th. This photo was taken at 23.57hrs UT and was scanned from a 35mm colour slide film, Fuji RSP 11 rated at 1600asa rating using a Nikon FM2, 24mm f2.8 lens wide open at around 20 seconds.

Ramasseum Mortuary temple Hypostyle Hall Astronomical columns ancient Egypt Luxor Thebes, situated at this West Bank location of the Nile at Luxor is Ramses 11 mortuary temple glowing in the late afternoon sunlight and in these photos the remains of the Hypostyle Hall on the south east side feature with the rear of the second pylon and the toppled statue of Ramasses 11 visible in the background when looking southwards to the First Pylon. Looking up into the ceiling of the Hypostyle Hall, its lintels and the papyriform painted open bell shaped capitals still showing original colour.

Tanis Amun Temple Ramses Statue legs Queen Nefertari classic scale Egypt Capital Delta Northern Egypt once thought to be the capital created by Ramses but was the capital of the 24th Nome of Lower Egypt and important in the late Egyptian period. Has Ramesside Temple of Amun with other temples from reigns of Osorkon, Sheshonq and Ptolemy but of special interest are the Royal Tombs where that of Psusennes in particular was intact and gave up one of the richest burial good collections, apart from Tutankhamun, with its famous silver coffin, now in the Cairo Museum. A visit to Tanis is usually by private means but can be incorporated with a day trip through the Delta visiting Heliopolis and Tell Basta but does involve considerable motoring.

Photographs in this gallery show daily life along the River Nile mainly from the cruises I have undertaken over the past 10 years or so. Sites that border the Nile are included although the major temples visted have their own dedicated sites such as Edfu and Kom Ombo. One of the enjoyments of the Nile cruise is the tranquility of watching 'life go by' usually characterised by the friendliness of those you pass whether boatmen or farm workers as well as seeing wild birds close at hand. The other aspect is the service on the cruiseboats from friendly crews and the chance to relax after hectic and often crowded temple visits.

The cruiseboat offers a peaceful way albeit a busy one to see modern day Egyptian life that occurs along the banks of this historic major African river, while visiting ancient temples as well and which still plays an important part in the wealth of Egypt and in the lives of ordinary Egyptians today just as it has over the past 5000 years or so. This photo was taken in 2005 and will not represent the current situation with a huge drop in tourist numbers because of the Arab Spring and its aftermath. The traders made the most of the delays and stopped cruiseboats to throw their wares up to passengers, mainly galabeas, cotton goods and carpets with much interest and humour at the normal shouted haggling process. For those after serious galabeas then a better bet for quality and value for money was to wait for Edfu and even the souks of Aswan, although the process of dealing with traders helped pass the time waiting, could be several hours, to get through the lock to continue the journey south.

Scottish summer sunset clouds colours blue yellow tree silhouette Aberdeenshire Deeside Kincardine O’Neil is some 25 miles west of Aberdeen in North East Scotland. So far this summer, 2018, there have not been many colourful sunsets despite some of the warmest weather for many a year. The most dramatic and vibrant period only lasts a few minutes so it is very much being in the right place at the best time but it helps having a forest or nice river scene on the doorstep but with a major mountain range to the west of Deeside, often the sun setting behind them or a large bank of rain cloud kills off the best of any last minute colour. The biggest problem with summer sunsets are they can take longer from the start of colourful clouds through to the more subtle final reds and in that time you are an open meal ticket for the notorious Scottish midges but every evening the shapes and nature of the clouds and light is different. This one was taken on the 24th August, 2016 while there is a further selection taken earlier on the 12th.

Crathes Castle yellow garden golden peaceful summer Deeside Aberdeenshire Scotland of which one of the centre pieces is the walled garden of this historic property with The Golden Garden to the right of the main entrance and ticket office which continues southwards to the woodland walk. Past the Red Garden and down to the Doocot and the bottom of the June Border and on this July day blessed with bright sunshine and blue skies. The building dates from the 16th century although the land belonged to the Burnett’s of Leys as a gift from Robert the Bruce in 1323. In the great hall is the Horn of Leys, supposedly a symbol of this grant. The tower house is one of the finest examples of the period and some of the original wall paintings still survive.

Crathes Castle aviary four squares roses summer June Border Deeside Scotland view of this historic property and the building dates from the 16th century although the land belonged to the Burnett’s of Leys as a gift from Robert the Bruce in 1323. In the great hall is the Horn of Leys, supposedly a symbol of this grant. The gardens this year were earlier than usual and by the time I got to the June Border, with suitable lighting; it was past it best with lupins going to see.
The tower house is one of the finest examples of the period and some of the original wall paintings still survive.
