This magnificent mortuary temple is located on the West Bank of the River Nile at Luxor at an area called Deir el-Bahri and built into the base of the cliffs of the Theban Hill behind which are branches of the Valley of the Kings. As you walk into the temple you pass these cliff on the righthand side dotted with cliff tombs and criss crossed with dankey tracks and paths now many used by the security forces watching over this infamous site after the 1997 massacre. Abu Sir Pyramids eg9512010jhp Egypt Egyptian Abu Sir necropolis pyramid Sahure columns mortuary temple near Saqqara lying on the desert plateau south from Giza is a complex of what were originally 14 pyramids of which only four are now discernible. The most complete is Old Kingdom Dynasty V King Sahure c 2480BC conforming to Fourth Dynasty plans and I was able to access the site in 1995 and took this amongst other photos. However after that the site was closed during visits up to 2005 while undergoing considerable excavation I understood so much more might now be visible assuming access of allowed. Near Memphis and the Saqqara entrances it was approached through the village of Abu Sir. Generally poorly constructed as in the twilight of the ‘Pyramid Age’ and when the centralised power of the crown declined, the remains although in a poor state of repair there were some fascinating remains such as a beautiful carved red granite column with sharp carved bas reliefs, channels for a drainage system, examples of highly skilled carving of granite blocks and shaped bowls thought to be for collecting blood from sacrificed bulls. Fettercairn Street xvv2002jhp Fettercairn Mearns Aberdeenshire Scottish summer square 18th century barony rural village situated on the flat rolling fertile farmlands of the Mearns and passed through most often by travellers leaving the main north trunk road to Aberdeen and cutting northwards over the Cairn O’Mount to Deeside. A barony from 1604 and busy market village although the Mercat Cross partly dating from 1670 and currently standing in the village square is probably a relic of past times from the nearby county town of Kincardine. A popular hotel the Ramsay Arms and a working Distillery with a visitor’s centre offer attractions to visitor and I personally remember photographing a Queen Victoria and Prince Albert lookalike starting the Victorian Trail promotion for the then Kincardine and Deeside District Council. Autumn Corse Road xvv3537jhp Autumn Beech tree Corse Neil road Craigievar Aberdeenshire Mar district is near the National Trust for Scotland Castle property is situated about 6 miles south of Alford A980 and is open to the public from March to end of August although closed during 2008/9 for major renovation on the exterior it is open again as of 2010. Grounds are normally open all year round. Example of the best in Scottish Baronial architecture, dating from 1626, and is unspoiled since being relinquished to the NTS by the Forbes-Sempill family. This large Deeside town on the River Dee some 18 miles west of Aberdeen in North East Scotland. It has always been a main visitor centre either for day trippers from Aberdeen or the usual flow of coaches and other visitors heading from Aberdeen westwards to Braemar and from there south to Perth or north to Inverness. It is also offers a very scenic route southwards over the Cairn O’Mount to Mearns. The gates are all that remains of the castle, demolished after WW2 but now serves as a fishing lodge and entrance to the fishing beat alongside the River Dee on the south bank extending westwards. Although the gates tend to be locked it is not ‘private’ land and should be accessible as a riverside walk in terms of the Land Reform [Scotland] Act 2003. Lying to the north of the River Dee it is a popular tourist centre for visitors travelling the length of this beautiful valley going southwards to Perth, visiting Balmoral Castle or Crathie Kirk or as a stopover before venturing northwards over the Lecht to Inverness. Looking across this valley lies the ruins of Tullich Kirk one of the oldest Christian Churches on Deeside. Partridge on Dyke xvv1381jhp Partridge red-legged bird Scottish Deeside colours plumage Alectoris rufa standing on a stone wall and showing off its very striking feather patterns from black throat band, red legs and black and white side panels all making it ideal camouflage when running in the undergrowth. This particular bird was brought onto the estate as part of a selection of more interesting birds for the seasonal rough shooting and is not a native of this part of Scotland. A pair that hung around my cottage did breed and had a clutch of chicks although sadly they survived only a few days as it was the year I also had a feral Scottish Wild cat resident. One interesting problem I had was the male flying at my conservatory window seeing a reflection of itself and presumably seeing it as competition-I had to stick a sheet of paper over the outside of the glass until it moved on. In the great hall is the Horn of Leys, supposedly a symbol of this grant. The 2010 June Border was not the best I have photographed and although there were good sunny days there did not seem to be a period the whole border was in its prime. The tower house is one of the finest examples of the period and some of the original wall paintings still survive.
