Some cruise companies now use coaches as there have been complaints about the care of the horses that has upset visitors and I know on one occasion the driver of the carriage tried to make it race others to get to the temple first-our group warned him no baksheesh and he returned to a walking pace. Khufu Kings Chamber EG951058JHP Khufu Kings Chamber Great Pyramid Gaiza Egypt Interior Construction Granite Blocks, the possible final resting place of the Pharaoh who had the largest pyramid built around 2500BC, the Great Pyramid at Giza. Photographed in 1995 when restrictions were less strict but oh for a digital camera. The huge granite blocks that make up this tomb are reckoned to weigh around 200 tons each and each fit snuggly enough that not even a knife can be inserted between them. Luxor Karnak Temple EG962004jhp Karnak Temple Eighth Pylon Seated Statues south face wire equipment front damaged located on the transverse axis south from the main central area in this large site near Luxor City centre on the East Bank of the River Nile and it the largest religious complex on the Nile. This view is of the Eighth Pylon with its southern face dominated by five colossal figures from Amenhotep 1, the most complete and Amenhotep 11 while the two either side of the doorway are of Tuthmosis 11 and all were later restored by Tuthmosis 111 although all are now in very poor condition. The pylon was originally raised by Hatshepsut but subsequently her identity was removed as was the name of Amun which offended the heretic Pharaoh Akhenaten but later restored by Seti 1. The area around the eighth to tenth pylons is largely covered in various blocks of variously decorated stone all eventually waiting new homes in restored chapels such as that of Hatshepsut's Chapelle Rouge in the Open Air Museum. These are taken from inside the first court looking at its north face with some standard Ramasses propaganda carvings of Battle of Kadesh scenes and to the SE side of the court are the remains of the colonnaded Palace where the Pharaoh would have stayed for the important Festivals and ceremonies he was bound to attend. Photographs in this gallery show daily life along the River Nile mainly from the cruises I have undertaken over the past 10 years or so. Sites that border the Nile are included although the major temples visted have their own dedicated sites such as Edfu and Kom Ombo. One of the enjoyments of the Nile cruise is the tranquility of watching 'life go by' usually characterised by the friendliness of those you pass whether boatmen or farm workers as well as seeing wild birds close at hand. The other aspect is the service on the cruiseboats from friendly crews and the chance to relax after hectic and often crowded temple visits.

Seheil Rock Carvings EG052617JHP Seheil Island Rock Carvings Fading Boulders Sun Bleached Weathering on this island near Aswan amongst the River Nile cataracts. The main reason for this private excursion by motorboat was to visit the rock carvings which cover this boulder strewn part of the Nile recording many events throughout the ancient history of the Egyptian Empire spanning some 3000 years although most were made in the 18-18 Dynasties. Most were the work of officials, often before they went to Nubia or reporting their efforts on return. The most notable carving is the Ptolemaic Famine Stele which refers to a famine during the reign of Doser, famous for the Step Pyramid at Saqqara, some 2000 years before. Super-Blue-Moon-wsc6525jhp Scotland super full blue moon details structure closest perigee Aberdeenshire looking to Ord Fundlie from Crooktree near Kincardine O’Neil in Aberdeenshire, North East Scotland about 25 miles west of Aberdeen. Photo of the super blue moon, second full moon in August was taken on evening of 31st August at 21.39BST using a Nikkor AF-S 28-300 mm zoom lens on a tripod with a cable release as the exposure time was 1/200sec at 11 with an ISO of 200. This is not what would be deemed astronomical quality but gives the false impression it is bigger than it is as so close to a natural foreground whereas a few hours later it will appear much smaller high in the night sky-in fact it is exactly the same size in reality. This was taken the evening of the fullest moon-the last time this close and as 'big' was 1948. It is all relative to the beholder and certainly other full moons appear much the same-taken as it clears the hill top as gives more of a sense of scale. Double-Rainbow-over-Barley-wsc6474jhp Rainbow double colourful dramatic sky clouds field Torphins Deeside Aberdeenshire Scotland weather photo autumn afternoon sunlight and although not perhaps calendar material are none the less great photography subjects. This summer double rainbow occurred on the late afternoon of 29th August, 2023 at 17.57BST from a rain shower passing over. Camera used was a Nikon D700 FX body with 16-35mm zoom lens at 16mm focal length, ISO 200 at f11 aperture with 1/320sec exposure. The shapes, size and colours make them a subject I enjoy photographing and are a reflection of the great mix of weather and light we have in the North East of Scotland. One big headache is the rain that creates them so lenses have to be kept dry or covered as much as possible as well as the photographer. This was taken from Ord Fundlie hillside by Crooktree farm track north of Kincardine O’Neil, looking across to the Hill of Fare and Torphins. NLC-over-Deeside-qax6745jhp Noctilucent clouds NLC summer northwards Scotland Deeside sky silver streak rare event usually occurring between latitudes 55 and 65 degrees resembling thin cirrus but most often a bluish silvery colour although orange or reddish colours from latent twilight are visible towards the horizon and are a beautiful and eerie sight, the spidery network rather like the mind filaments from Dumbledore's Pensieve in Harry Potter usually of sapphire blue, gossamer white colours from ice crystals catching the last twilight is seen around the time the brightest stars appear and their strength grows around maximum darkness, usually after midnight BST. They happen only a few times a year and need a clear cloudless night best to see them although in this photo the normal clouds are also present. This is taken looking magnetic 280-320 degrees from Crooktree North and Westwards and 25 miles west of Aberdeen in North East Scotland, first show in 2020 in the late evening of the 11th June into early 12th. Taken at 23.03 UT [after midnight in BST] using a D700 Nikon DSLR with a Tokina SD 28-70mm f2.8 at f5.6, ISO 200 for 13secs. The shapes, size and often awesome sense of power of clouds and often couple with rain storms and rainbows make them a subject I enjoy photographing and are a truer reflection perhaps of the great mix of weather and light we have in the North East of Scotland, this one looking towards Torphins and the Hill of Fare not visible behind the storm clouds. Photos of the main towns and villages along the River Dee from Banchory westwards to Braemar with villages bordering the north and south sides of the river such as Torphins and Tarland to Strachan on the south.
Blackhall Castle Gates xvv1200jhp Banchory Blackhall silver granite gates castle fishing lodge Deeside summer is located just before crossing the road bridge over the River Dee into Banchory coming from the south. This large Deeside town on the River Dee some 18 miles west of Aberdeen in North East Scotland. It has always been a main visitor centre either for day trippers from Aberdeen or the usual flow of coaches and other visitors heading from Aberdeen westwards to Braemar and from there south to Perth or north to Inverness. It is also offers a very scenic route southwards over the Cairn O’Mount to Mearns. The gates are all that remains of the castle, demolished after WW2 but now serves as a fishing lodge and entrance to the fishing beat alongside the River Dee on the south bank extending westwards. Although the gates tend to be locked it is not ‘private’ land and should be accessible as a riverside walk in terms of the Land Reform [Scotland] Act 2003. This fortress occupies a site going back into Pictish or earlier times and has had an association with most aspects of Scottish history through its most turbulent times, most notable was the siege during Cromwell’s attempts to conquer Scotland and again in 1685 during the imprisonment of the Covenanters in the infamous Whigs Vault. This photograph was taken in January 1986 and is scanned off a 645 transparency and was used as a Stirling Gallery postcard which is still being used and has sold over 200,000 cards. Grounds are normally open all year round. Example of the best in Scottish Baronial architecture, dating from 1626, and is unspoiled since being relinquished to the NTS by the Forbes-Sempill family. A marked clifftop trail makes the journey between Covesea and Hopetown easier with some spectacular views and plenty of marine birdlife. Along this stretch of the coast is a cave called the Sculptors Cave with Pictish carvings showing the ancient attraction of this coastline reinforced with the importance of nearby Burghead, the site of a major Pictish fort and harbour. Lying to the north of the River Dee it is a popular tourist centre for visitors travelling the length of this beautiful valley going southwards to Perth, visiting Balmoral Castle or Crathie Kirk or as a stopover before venturing northwards over the Lecht to Inverness. This was taken at ISO 1250 as against my usual 200 so assume I had mistakenly left this from a previous evening’s photography where I needed the higher sensitivity. The road from Whitehouse crosses the River Don near keig at the junction for the Auchleven to Insch Road. Nearby is a righthand turn which follows the River Don passing the Cothiemuir Natural Burial Cemetery by way of the Lord's Throat and Paradise Woods to the Kemnay Monymusk road. Falls Feugh Autumn SO20036jhp Scotland Autumn Falls River Feugh Banchory colours beech golden waterfall water rocks at famous Royal Deeside falls taken from footbridge near Banchory. This photo was taken in 2003 and was one of my early digital photographs using the Fuji S2Pro, a camera I had tested and decided to switch to fulltime giving up slide film. A recent upgrade of the public viewing footbridge by the old road bridge has had additional interest by the creation of a wooden sculpture created for the ‘selfies’ as an alternative to allowing padlocks to be attached to the wire screens which was becoming a safety hazard given the accumulated weight. This photo was taken in 2003 and was one of my early digital photographs using the Fuji S2Pro, a camera I had tested and decided to switch to fulltime giving up slide film. A recent upgrade of the public viewing footbridge by the old road bridge has had additional interest by the creation of a wooden sculpture created for the ‘selfies’ as an alternative to allowing padlocks to be attached to the wire screens which was becoming a safety hazard given the accumulated weight. Loch Muick Scotland SO620081JHP Loch Muick Scottish Summer Afternoon Sandy Beach Water Brown Mountains on the eastern shore of this Scottish water to the south of Ballater in Aberdeenshire, North East Scotland. There is a complete and relatively easy walk round the loch and in the distance is the Royal Lodge of Glas-alt-shiel. The highest peak in the distance is the Broad Cairn.
