Karnak Two Obelisks EG075002jhp Egyptian Tuthmose Hatshepsut Granite Obelisks Karnak Temple Ramesses gate is in the central area of this huge sprawling site located near Luxor City centre on the East Bank of the River Nile and Karnak is the largest religious complex on the Nile. On the right is Queen Hatshepsut's Obelisk, one of two remaining standing obelisks, is from between the fourth and fifth pylons looking north in the Transverse Hall. The obelisk of red Aswan granite is the third tallest standing in the world, weighs over 320 tons and stands nearly 30 metres. Encased by Thutmosis 111 who disapproved of his Aunt, his bid to remove her existence benefited us in that the lower section remained largely intact but higher sections were defaced by Akhenaten some 130 years later. The other obelisk is that of Tuthmose partially framed by the gate of Ramesses 1X viweed from the First Court at the rear of the Seventh Pylon. Karnak Carved Wall EG074997jhp Egyptian Court Wall Reliefs Karnak Gifts Ramses priest officials Amun on the walls of the Court between the seventh and eighth pylons where the high priest Amun Amenhotep is acknowledging the receipt of precious gifts including gold and silver from Ramesses 1X. The priest has two officials touching his linen robe possibly indicating how important he is. This photo shows this scene which complete as repeated in mirror fashion along the wall. This tableaux is carved on the eastern wall that connects the two pylons. Thanks to the capability of the modern digital camera, the first and only chance I have had to use one, a Fuji S2 as photography is now banned in the Valley of Kings per se and especially in the tombs. Adjustments in Photoshop give the chance of reasonably accurate colours even when the tomb paintings were lit by low level artificial light when tripods and flash were not allowed; what could I get with a Nikon F700 and a tripod, which were allowed at one time as well.
