Aurora Borealis or Northern Lights displays photographed taken over Aberdeeshire in Scotland since 1989 covering some 350 events with arc, rays, coronas with a wide rnage of shapes and colours
Aurora 7Mar94 ab94631jhp Aurora Borealis Scotland Deeside westwards tree winter display green nitrogen gas rays arc Aberdeenshire taken on the 7th March, 1994 at Crooktree, 25 miles west of Aberdeen looking from west to north with Cassiopeia lying to the right top. This was the best of seven nights in a row of displays during one of the most active phases of the 90’s Solar Cycle. This photo was scanned from a 35mm colour slide film, Fuji RDP pushed processed for a 1600asa rating using a Nikon FM2, 28mm f2.8 lens wide open at around 20 seconds. What was unusual about this display was the very distinct folding of the arc giving a distinct curtain effect from the many moving rays, the green colours being from low altitude oxygen ionisation around 20.00hrs GMT. This photo was used as the cover image for The Aurora, a book published by me in 1997, now sadly out of print but still avaiable on the second hand market. This magnificent mortuary temple is located on the West Bank of the River Nile at Luxor at an area called Deir el-Bahri and built into the base of the cliffs of the Theban Hill behind which are branches of the Valley of the Kings. As you walk into the temple you pass these cliff on the righthand side dotted with cliff tombs and criss crossed with dankey tracks and paths now many used by the security forces watching over this infamous site after the 1997 massacre. Dedicated to two Gods – Sobek, the crocodile and Horus, the falcon and although it has been damaged over the years, mainly through slipping into the River Nile and some structural damage owing to earthquakes, there are still some wonderful colourful reliefs of the most detailed and delicate style. This trip was special for me in that I got special permission to climb up the back of the temple on the hill behind and match a view I had on a Victorian albumen print; the local Police Chief had to be involved and thanks to a good Kuoni Guide he agreed for me to be accompanied by a policemen as security was still a big thing after the 1997 attacks at Luxor. Unfortunately in the excitement I had forgot to adjust my ASA rating for Velvia and took the photos based on 400ASA-the film maws later pushed to 200asa so there is some increase in grain structure, not a feature of Velvia generally. On this visit some cleaning and restoration was being done to the many painted bas reliefs on the columns-hence the scaffolding and the sun umbrella but the bonus was the reliefs looked particularly vibrant. The time of day also meant some of the museum blocks with deep cut carvings were ideal to photograph as the shadows gave greater emphasis to the excellent cut marks of some iconic hieroglyphic symbols. Dedicated to two Gods – Sobek, the crocodile and Horus, the falcon and although it has been damaged over the years, mainly through slipping into the River Nile and some structural damage owing to earthquakes, there are still some wonderful colourful reliefs of the most detailed and delicate style. This trip was special for me in that I got special permission to climb up the back of the temple on the hill behind and match a view I had on a Victorian albumen print; the local Police Chief had to be involved and thanks to a good Kuoni Guide he agreed for me to be accompanied by a policemen as security was still a big thing after the 1997 attacks at Luxor. Unfortunately in the excitement I had forgot to adjust my ASA rating for Velvia and took the photos based on 400ASA-the film maws later pushed to 200asa so there is some increase in grain structure, not a feature of Velvia generally. On this visit some cleaning and restoration was being done to the many painted bas reliefs on the columns-hence the scaffolding and the sun umbrella but the bonus was the reliefs looked particularly vibrant. The time of day also meant some of the museum blocks with deep cut carvings were ideal to photograph as the shadows gave greater emphasis to the excellent cut marks of some iconic hieroglyphic symbols. Photographs in this gallery show daily life along the River Nile mainly from the cruises I have undertaken over the past 10 years or so. Sites that border the Nile are included although the major temples visted have their own dedicated sites such as Edfu and Kom Ombo. One of the enjoyments of the Nile cruise is the tranquility of watching 'life go by' usually characterised by the friendliness of those you pass whether boatmen or farm workers as well as seeing wild birds close at hand. The other aspect is the service on the cruiseboats from friendly crews and the chance to relax after hectic and often crowded temple visits.

One enjoyable tradition is the afternoon tea and cakes provided free of charge as part of the Nile Cruise experience with its origins from Victorian days. After a busy day maybe visiting temples or a hot day relaxing on deck watching the busy daily rural life along the River Nile, the evening sunset can be a quiet peaceful time in an otherwise hectic itinerary. I was only on the Atlas once and although small and compact with a real sense of age it was an enjoyable cruise and felt more intimate than I imagine those huge glass and marble multi storey cruiseboats are, Sadly these days I hear that many are rusting away at anchor because of the dire downturn in the tourist numbers as happened after the 1997 terrorist attacks in Luxor. Glen O Dee 9Sept97 141038jhp Banchory hospital Glen O’Dee Nordrach sanatorium granite tower closed silver birch trees in this Aberdeenshire town some 18 miles west of Aberdeen in North East Scotland on the River Dee with this photo taken in September, 1997 just before it officially closed down. The town has always been a main visitor centre either for day trippers from Aberdeen or the usual flow of coaches and other visitors heading from Aberdeen westwards along Royal Deeside to Braemar and from there south to Perth or north to Inverness. It is also offers a very scenic route southwards over the Cairn O’Mount to Mearns. The river is a famous salmon fishing water which flows from the Cairngorms eastwards into the North Sea at Aberdeen. A colourful summer display and memorial Park is passed on the left hand side after leaving the town centre, it is adjacent to the start of the Golf Course and to the south is the distinct hilline of Scolty Hill with its Memorial Tower. The Glen O’Dee was sadly burnt to the ground in 2016 owing to an act of arson by teenagers. It is promised by the current owners/developers that this beautiful building would be restored. It was to have been converted into flats having fallen into disuse as a hospital given the costs of maintenance, H&S, Fire Regulations and of course the eradication of TB generally by modern medical advances. At the time of the fire it was in a very sorry state of disrepair. Originally opened in 1900 by Dr Lawson of Banchory as one of the earliest commercial sanatorium’s and with a design based on a German model, with a central granite tower, but mainly wooden construction with all rooms facing south for the sun while at the rear were the corridors and service rooms. It treated TB patients, including w. Somerset Maugham, based upon the pine forest air and plenty of sunshine idea. It closed in 1928, was later a luxury hotel, commandeered by the Army during WW2, in 1948 the Red Cross used it for treatment of ex-servicemen and women with TB, had a short-lived revival during the 60’s Typhoid outbreak in Aberdeen and in 1955 became a convalescent home under the new NHS until it closed in 1998 when a hospital facility in modern purpose buildings was constructed. A colourful summer display and memorial Park is passed on the left hand side after leaving the town centre, it is adjacent to the start of the Golf Course and to the south is the distinct hilline of Scolty Hill with its Memorial Tower. The Glen O’Dee was sadly burnt to the ground in 2016 owing to an act of arson by teenagers. It is promised by the current owners/developers that this beautiful building would be restored. It was to have been converted into flats having fallen into disuse as a hospital given the costs of maintenance, H&S, Fire Regulations and of course the eradication of TB generally by modern medical advances. At the time of the fire it was in a very sorry state of disrepair. Originally opened in 1900 by Dr Lawson of Banchory as one of the earliest commercial sanatorium’s and with a design based on a German model, with a central granite tower, but mainly wooden construction with all rooms facing south for the sun while at the rear were the corridors and service rooms.
