Photographs in this gallery show daily life along the River Nile mainly from the cruises I have undertaken over the past 10 years or so. Sites that border the Nile are included although the major temples visted have their own dedicated sites such as Edfu and Kom Ombo. One of the enjoyments of the Nile cruise is the tranquility of watching 'life go by' usually characterised by the friendliness of those you pass whether boatmen or farm workers as well as seeing wild birds close at hand. The other aspect is the service on the cruiseboats from friendly crews and the chance to relax after hectic and often crowded temple visits.
River Nile Cruiseboats EG051988jhp Modern Egypt River Nile cruiseboats convoy busy congestion water photo the journey from Luxor to Aswan and on this stretch to Esna by cruiseboat offers a peaceful way albeit a busy one these days to see modern day Egyptian life that occurs along the banks of this historic major African river and which still plays an important part in the wealth of Egypt and in the lives of ordinary Egyptians today just as it has over the past 5000 years or so. This photo was taken in 2005 and will not represent the current situation with a huge drop in tourist numbers because of the Arab Spring and its aftermath. Balnacraig-Viaduct-Torphins-5159jhp-22June88 Balnacraig Viaduct Deeside Railway Line Torphins Lumphanan Aberdeenshire Scotland demolished in 1989 by British Rail on safety grounds and was the last of old relics of the Deeside Line that ran between Aberdeen and Ballater. It was built in 1857-9 by engineer John Willet on the Aboyne Extension from Banchory and was later part of the Ballater branch line, the Royal Deeside Line of the Great North Scotland Railway. Known also as the Sundayswells, Torphins and Lumphanan Viaducts it crossed the Beltie Burn at the Tornaveen junction off the A980 and remnants of the railway line embankments can still be seen. National Grid reference is 60690332. This photo was taken 22 June 1988. Structural details are noted in the keywords. An attempt was made to save the viaduct but sufficient funds could not be raised to maintain it and it was eventually demolished in June of 1989. Many of these photos were taken while I covered the story for the local newspaper the Deeside Piper and are taken from 35mm and 645 transparency film of varying quality so the quality is not always of the best. Snow scene photographs of Deeside in North East Scotland generally excluding Historic Properties which will include snow scenes with the castles etc.
Lochnagar ice Climber 0121387jhp Snow Winter Lochnagar Ice Climber action face Mountain Scotland corrie Aberdeenshire Photo taken above the lochan and corrie of the fourth highest mountain in Britain in North East Scotland to the south of Ballater and the River Dee with the distant Cairngorm Range in the background. On approaching the saddle above the lochan and looking across at the summit of the mountain range, the Meikle Pap is small climb to the right and does give useful views across the whole front of the mountain and the opportunity from its boulder scree field for foreground interest to create a sense of 3 dimensional depth. This point is an approximate 2-2.5 hour’s walk from the carpark on well defined track to the Fox’s Well and thereafter a conservation constructed pathway.
