Photos of the recently opened Temple of Merneptah site on West Bank at Luxor with coloured reliefs, open air museum exhibits and interior carvings and paintings.
Merneptah Sacred Lake EG051919JHP Ancient Egypt Temple Merneptah Sacred Lake Luxor New Site Egyptian Pharaoh who reigned around 1212-1202BC, is on the West Bank of the Nile at Luxor and was recently opened not long before these photos were taken in 2005. It is a mixture of open air and covered museum exhibits with some remains of the temple area with column bases. Some of the coloured wall reliefs are exquisite and because of the natural light available were easily photographed despite being inside. There is also a replica of the famous Israeli Stele, the original being in the Cairo Museum. This is a visit that would have to made outwith the usual West Bank package tour although easily arranged and is easily found next to the Ramasseum. Aberdeen Seaton Autumn 1919512jhp Aberdeen City Seaton Park autumn colours Wallace Tower path bench is a wide expanse of parkland lying between the University and River Don to the north of the City in the North East of Scotland. The offers walks and many areas to exercise and enjoy flower displays as well with easy access across the famous Brig O’Balgownie to Donside and the banks of the River Don as it flows eventually into the North Sea. Also in the park is the Wallace Tower, a partial replica of Benholm’s House or Lodging once situated in the Netherkirkgate but demolished in 1964. The present structure incorporates some of the original stonework from this unique z-plan towerhouse and one of the four remaining 16th Century buildings in the City. Banchory Dee Autumn 1919316jhp Banchory River Dee downstream autumn colours beech trees Deeside Scotland viewed from the road bridge entering the town from the south to this large Deeside town on the River Dee some 18 miles west of Aberdeen in North East Scotland. It has always been a main visitor centre either for day trippers from Aberdeen or the usual flow of coaches and other visitors heading from Aberdeen westwards to Braemar and from there south to Perth or north to Inverness. It is also offers a very scenic route southwards over the Cairn O’Mount to Mearns. Scolty Hill with its memorial tower is a distinctive landscape pointer to the town with easily accessible forest walks and a not too strenuous walk to its summits with pleasing views of much of Royal Deeside as well as interesting views to the north and south. The location has had a history going back for over 800 years, there was a medieval Palace for the Bishop’s of Aberdeen, which was located to the south of the present house in the photograph. SEPP have carried out excavations of the site finding considerable evidence of the early palace. The current house dates from around 1566 after it was acquired by the Leslies of Balquhain although from a small tower originally it has expanded to the present façade in 1818. The carved panel above the main entrance is attributed to Count Patrick Leslie around 1690. Although it is accessible to view it is in a dangerous state of disrepair and is fenced off from public access. The location has had a history going back for over 800 years, there was a medieval Palace for the Bishop’s of Aberdeen, which was located to the south of the present house in the photograph. SEPP have carried out excavations of the site finding considerable evidence of the early palace. The current house dates from around 1566 after it was acquired by the Leslies of Balquhain although from a small tower originally it has expanded to the present façade in 1818. The carved panel above the main entrance is attributed to Count Patrick Leslie around 1690. Although it is accessible to view it is in a dangerous state of disrepair and is fenced off from public access. Knock Castle xvv1919jhp Knock Castle tower house Ballater Scotland fort ruin summer larch trees sunny is a Historic Scotland property to the south of town on Royal Deeside on the Balmoral Estate at Knock Farm accessed from the South Deeside Road. It has a sad history of family feuds between Gordon of Knock, the builder of the present tower, who dropped down dead on hearing the news that his family was killed in one day at the hands of the ‘Black’ Forbes of Strath Girnock. He in turn was later killed by Gordon of Abergeldie who inherited the castle but let it fell into disrepair.
