Scottish Aurora Borealis Neuk February winter rays streaming active movement 1990 taken on the Harestone Road from the small pull off at The Neuk Farm which the local farmer used as an area to dump his old hayrake and a few bales of straw. Taken after midnight on the 16th February, this one around 00.59hrs UT is one of the many displays in early 1990, a decade which proved to be an extremely productive one for Aurora displays and photography. I have already added other photos taken using Fuji RSP11 35mm slide film rated at 1600asa and developed in this case at my local Lab in Aberdeen for 1600asa-pushed 2 stops. They were exposed around 20secs which from experience I had settled on as about the best combination of film, exposure time and with a 28mm or 24mm f2.8 wide angle lens so these are much brighter and more colour saturated although slightly more visual than would be seen with the human eye. What cannot be recorded is the amount of movement of the rays especially when tracking right to left and also when streaming or flaring occurs with very bright patches starting at the base of the ray and moving rapidly upwards.

Dendara Dendarah temple Nile Egypt hieroglyphs wall carving spotlight sun in this beautiful mainly Ptolemaic and Roman structure although the site extends back into the earliest periods of Egyptian existence and it is also famous as having one of the only representations the famous Queen Cleopatra V11 with her son by Julius Caesar, Caesarion. The temple can be reached by road from Luxor and is also the destination for a popular day cruise on the River Nile from Luxor via Qena. Walking around the many darkly lit passages and rooms there are occasional gems like this where a hole in the ceiling or wall lets a spotlight of sunshine highlight just one part of the elaborately carved and decorated walls.

Gizah Egyptian Central Field ancient Debhen Tomb interior wall hieroglyphics in an area that lies roughly between the causeway of Menkaure and that of Khafre in which there are many old mastabas and rock cut tombs, some open to the public such as this one of Debhen and the most prominent of which is the Mastaba of Queen Khentkawes the last major Royal construction in the Giza complex. It is an area left to the individual to explore and has an eerie feel wandering amongst some grotesque eroded faces of limestone showing the natural damage that centuries of wind and blown sand can do to unprotected soft limestone. In this interior photograph because of the strong artificial light I changed the colour images to B&W as it shows up more clearly than the very orange colour cast digital images.

Egyptian River Nile Cruise hot deck railings lifebelts riverbank infra red film ghostly on the journey from Luxor to Aswan and on this stretch to Edfu by cruiseboat offers a peaceful way albeit a busy one these days to see modern day Egyptian life that occurs along the banks of this historic major African river and which still plays an important part in the wealth of Egypt and in the lives of ordinary Egyptians today just as it has over the past 5000 years or so. This photo was taken in 1998 on a Stars and Signs cruise and will not represent the current situation with a huge drop in tourist numbers because of the Arab Spring and its aftermath. This particular photograph was taken using Kodak Infra Red film which gives this classic ghostly affect. It was taken using a Nikon FM manual camera, 28mm f2.8 Nikkor or Tokina SD 28-70mm f3.5lens with a Red filter, rated at 200ASA and processed in Aculux for 14 mins.

Egypt Temple Merneptah statue legs carving West Bank Luxor 6x6 square format photo of this open air museum site an Egyptian Pharaoh who reigned around 1212-1202BC, son of Ramasses 11, is on the West Bank of the Nile at Luxor and this photo was taken from the main West bank road looking towards the River Nile and with the Ramasseum towards the extreme left. A new museum and some excavated parts of his temple were opened in 2005. It is a mixture of open air and covered museum exhibits with some remains of the temple area with column bases. Some of the coloured wall reliefs are exquisite and because of the natural light available were easily photographed despite being inside. There is also a replica of the famous Israeli Stele, the original being in the Cairo Museum. This is a visit that would have to made outwith the usual West Bank package tour although easily arranged and is easily found next to the Ramasseum.

Bani Hassan Rock Cut Officials Tombs Face Cliff Steep Egypt Desert with thirty nine tombs along the face of a bluff above the River Nile some 20km south of Minya make Bani Hasan a special visiting place for its decorations along the themes of wrestling, battle scenes and the collection of taxes by the nomarchs of the Oryx Nome give some beautiful tomb paintings to view - unfortunately photography was absolutely refused when I visited. Although modern steps now exist be warned it is a steep climb especially in the heat of the Egyptian summer.

Ancient Egypt limestone south tomb Step Pyramid Djoser Saqqara steps dating from around 2500BC to the south of Cairo is the earliest stone built monument in Egypt and probably in the world and near the ancient Egyptian capital of Memphis and was designed by Imhotep, one of the greatest minds in ancient Egypt and later deified as a God. Construction is with small bricks of fine white limestone giving this huge building a very delicate structure and aesthetic appearance. Still one of the highlights of any visit to Egypt, despite the wealth of fantastic places to see, and for me best enjoyed towards the evening when the site is often quiet and the face of the pyramid from the colonnade entrance is bathed in soft golden light.

It is possible to climb over the hills above the Valley, pass above the huge amphitheatre of Deir el-Bahri above Hatshepsut’s spectacular Mortuary Temple and come down into Deir el-Medina, the workers village using the same paths as they must have done over 3000 years ago.

Double rainbow blue clouds cicley Hill fare Scottish May weather evening bright sunlight and although not perhaps calendar material are none the less great photography subjects. The shapes, size and often awesome sense of power of clouds and often couple with rain storms and rainbows make them a subject I enjoy photographing and are a truer reflection perhaps of the great mix of weather and light we have in the North East of Scotland. One big headache is the rain that creates them so lenses have to be kept dry or covered as much as possible and it also appears in the images are short lines as it falls catching the sunlight although in these photos not a problem. This light evening light is particularly beautiful especially setting off the dark clouds.

Royal Deeside Scotland summer sunset clouds shapes orange colours sun setting hilline Aberdeenshire Kincardine O’Neil is some 25 miles west of Aberdeen in North East Scotland. The most dramatic and vibrant period only lasts a few minutes so it is very much being in the right place at the best time but it helps having a forest or nice river scene on the doorstep but with a major mountain range to the west of Deeside, often the sun setting behind them or a large bank of rain cloud kills off the best of any last minute colour. The biggest problem with summer sunsets are they can take longer from the start of colourful clouds through to the more subtle final reds and in that time you are an open meal ticket for the notorious Scottish midges.

Kincardine O’Neil burn ash tree flowers summer War Memorial Aberdeenshire Scotland Royal Deeside heralded as the oldest village on Deeside with a history dating back before Christian times, situated on the River Dee at a ferry crossing point and connected to the early development of Christianity credited with a church set up by St Erchard around 933AD. Probably the most traditional of the Deeside villages with little modern development to change its original character situated between the major towns of Banchory and Aboyne on the north Deeside Road. The War Memorial renovation was completed this year, 2013, and the flower displays lovingly tended by local volunteers.

There was an original fortress on the site dating back to before 1246 when records indicate that it was to be fortified during the reign of King Alexander 111 to fend off attacks by the Vikings although it was subsequently captured by them. The Ogilvie’s had lost interest in Findlater Castle after they decided to build Cullen House a somewhat different elegant mansion close to Cullen.

Once there was a wooden bridge giving access to the castle after a steep descent down the cliffs. Little now remains of the building and it is now in a dangerous state of repair and although accessible should be taken with great care. Remains of some walls which include two floors with vaulted rooms possibly the kitchen and a dungeon can be easily seen from the clifftop as in this photograph. There is a signed carpark as you leave Portsoy and pass Sandend. From the carpark at the rear of farm buildings you pass a doocot on the left but continue on straight down towards the cliffs along a grass cut path and you will see the castle below you where there are seats and an information board.
The name it is suggested might derive from the Norse Fyn is white and leitr for cliff, giving Fynleitr or Fynletyr whereas another suggestion is from the Gaelic with fionn for white and leitir for cliff both relating to the nature of the cliffs around this area exhibiting high deposits of quartz.

Kinkell Church ruin Inverurie sacrament house Greek Cross Donside Aberdeenshire Scotland early Church dating from 1400’s located near Inverurie and accessed from Keith Hall road in Aberdeenshire north west of Aberdeen City in the North East of Scotland. Famous for its elaborate Sacrament House on the north wall in form of Greek cross with housing for consecrated host, attributed to the Alexander Galloway, Vicar in 1524. Also has distinctive graveslab with carving of armoured knight Gilbert de Greenlaw, killed at battle of Harlaw in 1411 and later reused by a Forbes in 1592. It was unroofed in 1771 and now charming ruin on the northern banks of the River Don.

Old Brig O’Dee stone bridge heather river Dee Invercauld Scottish cirrus clouds dramatic light and is one of the many military bridges built after the Forty Five Rebellion and that carried troops across the Highlands. This was built by Major Caulfield 1752 although often called a General Wade bridge, the person who started the process many years earlier. The bridge is located just east of Braemar and this view is from eastern side of the bridge, looking upstream with the golden colours of autumn larch and silver birch.

Balmoral Upper Deeside high views westwards fields trees silver birch farm track dyke Scottish with the famous building below built by Prince Albert for Queen Victoria at the location of a smaller castle which was demolished to make way for the current larger property. It is located on the Banks of the River Dee in the community of Crathie mid-way between the towns of Ballater and Braemar on the A93. Lochnagar, the fourth highest mountain in Britain lies to the south of the estate and its distinct shape can be seen on the horizon line.
The estate and building are private belonging to Her Majesty the Queen and although open to the public for certain times of the year are not public property. Kemnay Donside Aberdeenshire Scottish autumn River Don bridge road recess which crosses the river on the west side route heading from Kemnay to Monymusk via the Fetternear junction and Blairdaff. The bridge was a concrete construction around the 1920’s and although showing a few areas of weathering is in remarkably good condition and the design, partly influenced by wishes of the people of Kemnay during its design and construction, remains complimentary to the area. One of those design features requested were the recesses so walkers could stand safely while enjoying the views of the River.

Snow Winter Cairngorms Mountains Scotland Meikle Pap rocks shapes ice Aberdeenshire Photo taken from the Meikle Pap past the fourth highest mountain Lochnagar in Britain in North East Scotland to the south of Ballater and the River Dee with the distant Cairngorm Range in the background. On approaching the saddle above the lochan and looking across at the summit of the mountain range, the Meikle Pap is small climb to the right and does give useful views across the whole front of the mountain and the opportunity from its boulder scree field for foreground interest to create a sense of 3 dimensional depth. This point is an approximate 2-2.5 hour’s walk from the carpark on well defined track to the Fox’s Well and thereafter a conservation constructed pathway.
