Aurora Borealis or Northern Lights displays photographed taken over Aberdeeshire in Scotland since 1989 covering some 350 events with arc, rays, coronas with a wide rnage of shapes and colours
Deeside Aurora aucf14110jhp Scotland Northern Lights display faded winter west north Deeside Aberdeenshire photographed near Kincardine O'Neil on Royal Deeside west of Aberdeen in the evening of 22nd November 2003, 25 miles west of Aberdeen. This followed a major storm on the 20th which with hindsight it was the biggest I have since on Deeside to date, 2018. This set of digital photos were taken from 21.58.03hrsUT for 17secs and these cf141 digital photos were taken at 1600ISO. The 8 photos in this cf141 sequence were taken in the space of about 20mins and followed the cf140 sequence taken in the early hours of the 21st. This photo showing a display dispersed west and interrupted by cloud cover. This digital photo was taken with a Fujifilm Finepix Digital S2Pro camera using a Sigma 15mm f2.8 fisheye lens, giving a fairly undistorted wide angle image, wide open aperture with most exposures manually near the 20 second mark which experience suggested was around the best exposure for the low light Aurora displays. These were digital recordings taken during 2003 when the quality of digital cameras had at last matched 35mm slide film standards and the noise factor was superior to the grain created pushing 400asa slide film to 1600asa. Aurora Corona Forming aucf13110jhp Aurora Borealis Scottish green rays clouds east Torphins lights Deeside Aberdeenshire photos taken on the evening of the 30th at Crooktree, 25 miles west of Aberdeen looking from the east to the south. This digital photo was taken at 23.16.29hrsUT for 19secs, showing green oxygen rays sweeping down from the east visible through gaps in the clouds and with the street lights of Torphins and car headlights on the main road from Banchory. The cf131 digital sequence, starting at 22.58.22, shows the continuing activity following on from the very active night of the 29th/30th with another Corona to be viewed through until the last frame at 23.25 which was frustrated by complete cloud cover and rain. Photos were taken with both digital and slide film and the first slide film started at around 21.50hrsUT on the evening of the 30th when the extensive cloud cover cleared. The magnetometer on site showed vigorous activity from 21.30hrs. This digital photo was taken with a Fujifilm Finepix Digital S2Pro camera, at maximum ISO of 1600 using a Sigma 15mm f2.8 fisheye lens, giving a fairly undistorted wide angle image, wide open aperture with most exposures manually near the 20 seconds mark which experience suggested was around the best exposure for the low light Aurora displays. These were some of my first digital recordings taken during 2003 when the quality of digital cameras had at last matched 35mm slide film standards and the noise factor was superior to the grain created pushing 400asa slide film to 1600asa. Aurora and Cloud aucf11103jhp Aurora Borealis Scotland autumn October clouds red ray northwards Deeside Aberdeenshire Scotland two photos taken on the evening of the 15th October, 2003 at Crooktree, 25 miles west of Aberdeen looking to north. This photo was taken at 23.29.10hrsUT for 18secs showing strong red ray activity from a very low grade arc and the constellation Ursa Major, The Plough or Big Dipper is just hidden behind the increasing cloud cover. I took 4 frames over 30 mins, so cloud cover stopped me photographing more of the display using my Fujifilm Finepix Digital S2Pro camera, at maximum ISO of 1600 using a Sigma 16mm f2.8 fisheye lens, giving a fairly undistorted wide angle image, wide open aperture with most exposures manually near the 20 seconds mark which experience suggested was around the best exposure for the low light Aurora displays. These were some of my earliest digital recordings taken during 2003 when the quality of digital cameras had at last matched 35mm slide film standards and for this display, sandwiched between 27th July and 28th October, I took no slide film. At 1600 ISO the noise factor was not a problem and the general look of the images were better than the corresponding slide film with 400asa stock pushed two stops to give an equivalent sensitivity level of 1600asa. There was a full moon that night sitting off to the east of this north facing display. This photo was taken at 23.05.37hrsUT for 17secs showing faint suggestion of ray activity with the yellow green oxygen gas in low grade arc and the constellation Ursa Major, The Plough or Big Dipper is just discernible behind the increasing cloud cover. Aurora Deeside au911019jhp Northern Lights Aberdeenshire autumn display strong arc red yellow streaming bright Deeside Aberdeenshire taken on the early morning just after 00.05 BST on 11th Sept 1991 at Crooktree, 25 miles west of Aberdeen looking to the north. An extremely bright and active display and this photo was one of several using a standard 50mm at f1.8 with much shorter exposures around 10 secs. This photo was scanned from a 35mm colour slide film, Fuji RSP11 processed for a 1600asa rating using a Nikon FM2 and usually 28mm f2.8 lens wide open at around 20 seconds. Giza Khafre Pyramid EG024110jhp Khafre Pyramid Egyptian limestone blocks Tura casing top section cloud, the second largest of the Gizah site monuments and constructed between 2558-2532BC during the reign of the Pharaoh Khafre [Greek name Chephren], one of Khufu’s sons and is responsible during a reign of around 25 years for the magnificent Funerary complex which is held to include The Sphinx. Although his Mortuary Temple is almost nothing but a foundation, his Valley Temple is a fantastic example of the skills of the early Egyptian craftsman with huge accurately cut pillars of granite which was the house after his death for numerous statues including the famous diorite one now in the Cairo Museum. This view is of the western face showing the mainly uncovered structure although remains of the outer casing of Tura Limestone can still be seen near the top. Dendara InfR EG981110jhp Dendera temple Egypt sphinx gate infra red propylon Trajan Domitian B&W entrance to this beautiful mainly Ptolemaic and Roman structure although the site extends back into the earliest periods of Egyptian existence and it is also famous as having one of the only representations the famous Queen Cleopatra V11 with her son by Julius Caesar, Caesarion.. The temple can be reached by road from Luxor and is also the destination for a popular day cruise on the River Nile from Luxor via Qena. This particular photograph was taken using Kodak Infra Red film which gives this classic ghostly affect. It was taken using a Nikon FM manual camera, 28mm Nikkor lens with a R72 filter and processed in ID11 for 11 mins. Deir el-Medina EG075110jhp Deir el-Medina Luxor Egypt Ramasseum Ptolemaic Temple pylons Karnak west bank houses streets is located on the West Bank of the River Nile at Luxor lies to the west of Qurnet Murai hill and is the location of a workman's village with the remains of houses, streets, temples and chapels. The workers are known for their work in the Valley tombs which they reached walking over the Theban plateau. Most photographs show the streets, houses, interior with domestic bowls and grinding querns and others a general overview of the village with its tombs and rock tombs to the North West corner. There are also some exquisitely decorated underground tombs of which a couple are included in the entrance ticket. This photograph shows the pan-bedded mudbrick enclosure wall around the Ptolemaic Tempe of Hathor and the distant Ramasseum with the fertile west bank beyond with the Pylons of Karnak temple in the very distance. Luxor Temple EG006110jhp Luxor Temple Court Amenhotep peristyle style columns papyrus-bud capitals, a glorious addition to the temple complex and the finest workmanship from the 18th Dynasty. Once it would have been covered and is still in generally good condition although some recent preservation work has been done because of the increasing water table. This photo was taken towards the end of the afternoon so hence it tends to be against the sun which sets over the West Bank. It can be a quiet time to visit the temple because most the main package tours have finished but also there is a lovely quality to the evening light casting a gentle golden glow over the limestone. Medinet Habu SS984110 Medinet Habu gateway columns lotus papyrus winged disc Small Chapel Ptolemaic Luxor Egypt located on the West Bank of the River Nile at Luxor and a complex of temples is now dominated by the mortuary temple of Ramasses 111. Apart from being in excellent condition generally, it offers much to see including some beautiful and detailed reliefs, the best coloured are in the second court and especially its scale. Not usually included in most standard tour packages, this temple is worth the effort to be visited privately. This photo was taken during a visit in November 1998 with a Stars and Signs Tour and is of the eastern gate, the usual point of entry for visitors. This photo is of the Ptolemaic gateway which was a latter addition to the Small Temple which lies outwith the main Temple. The gate with its winged disc emblem and still with remains of original paint would have been an entrance through a mudbrick pylon no longer in existence. This area was the final stage of the evolution of the Habu but was never completed and subsequently abandoned as the Ancient Egyptian culture gave way to Christianity. Tell Basta Papyrus Column EG077110JHP Tell Basta Bastet temple papyrus column granite Butastis ancient Egyptian site Delta is a large complex near the town of Zigazig north of Cairo which has recently had a new visitors centre and museum built but remains a rather confusing collection of damaged material with the main temple of Bastet reflected in this photographs. Damaged by earthquakes some 2000 years ago as is seen in much of the structural damage today it is still fascinating with the excitement of finding beautiful carvings and examples of the craftsmanship of those ancient builders now hidden away amongst grass and a scatter field of damaged remnants from what was a huge cult site to the Cat Goddess Bastet visited by hundreds and thousands of pilgrims as recorded by Herodotus. Not usually part of normal Egyptian packages but can be visited privately and is part of an interesting day journey that should include Tanis as well. Hawara Pyramid eg013110jhp Hawara Faiyum Egypt Amenemhet pyramid mudbricks many closeup layers construction exposed, to the south of Cairo was the last pyramid built in the 12th Dynasty, Middle Kingdom, by the Pharaoh Amenemhet 111 of the later design using mudbrick core which still stands dominant and substantial but the limestone covering of Tura Limestone is now all missing. The entrance on the south side is visible but the high ground water table means it is flooded as are all the lower chamber areas. It is most famous for the references to the Labyrinth; a comparison of its mortuary and temple complex to that at Knossos by Herodotus although little now remains except for a large area of sandy mounds and hollows divided by a canal; new excavations are underway to determine what might still exist. This pyramid was built after the king’s first attempt at Dashur was abandoned owing to subsidence problems it appears unfinished at the time of his death c1797BC. Abu Sir Pyramids eg9512110jhp Egypt Egyptian Abu Sir mortuary temple carved block cartouche King Sahure near Saqqara lying on the desert plateau south from Giza is a complex of what were originally 14 pyramids of which only four are now discernible. The most complete is Old Kingdom Dynasty V King Sahure c 2480BC conforming to Fourth Dynasty plans and I was able to access the site in 1995 and took this amongst other photos. However after that the site was closed during visits up to 2005 while undergoing considerable excavation I understood so much more might now be visible assuming access of allowed. Near Memphis and the Saqqara entrances it was approached through the village of Abu Sir. Generally poorly constructed as in the twilight of the ‘Pyramid Age’ and when the centralised power of the crown declined, the remains although in a poor state of repair there were some fascinating remains such as a beautiful carved red granite column with sharp carved bas reliefs, channels for a drainage system, examples of highly skilled carving of granite blocks and shaped bowls thought to be for collecting blood from sacrificed bulls. Photographs in this gallery show daily life along the River Nile mainly from the cruises I have undertaken over the past 10 years or so. Sites that border the Nile are included although the major temples visted have their own dedicated sites such as Edfu and Kom Ombo. One of the enjoyments of the Nile cruise is the tranquility of watching 'life go by' usually characterised by the friendliness of those you pass whether boatmen or farm workers as well as seeing wild birds close at hand. The other aspect is the service on the cruiseboats from friendly crews and the chance to relax after hectic and often crowded temple visits.

Seheil Rock Carvings EG052641JHP Seheil Sehel Egyptian Aswan Island Rock Carvings Many Numbered Records on this site amongst the River Nile cataracts. The main reason for this private excursion by motorboat was to visit the rock carvings which cover this boulder strewn part of the Nile recording many events throughout the ancient history of the Egyptian Empire spanning some 3000 years although most were made in the 18-18 Dynasties. Most were the work of officials, often before they went to Nubia or reporting their efforts on return. The most notable carving is the Ptolemaic Famine Stele which refers to a famine during the reign of Doser, famous for the Step Pyramid at Saqqara, some 2000 years before. Aberdeen New Kings 19110jhp New Kings College Aberdeen University High Street Scottish City park spring part of an ambitious plan which was never completed can be seen along the High Street of Old Aberdeen now very much the centre of the University area as you walk between Kings College to St Machar's Drive and cross to the Chanonry. The University complex is located to the northern area of the modern City lying south of the River Don. These 18th century houses were sympathetically restored in 1965 and add great character to this iconic part of Old Aberdeen. This photograph was taken in 2002 the last year I used slide film, either 35mm or 645 as my main medium for landscape photography. They are still representative of the City despite their age and is chosen because of the lovely light and colours as it can still be on the right day. Corse Castle Stonework wyy4110jhp Corse Castle Scotland Mar Stonework Pointing Stones Library Photos is located off B9119 Tarland road-take O’Neil Corse turnoff for a few hundred yards and is best viewed from road as very overgrown with stinging nettles and is not in good structural condition for exploring. Photographs show NW tower but basic structure is a shell with SE tower beyond. Still in Forbes family, probably built around late 1580’s by Patrick Forbes, Bishop of Aberdeen from 1564-1663. Fairly traditional Z-Plan tower-house of the area and in a state unlikely to be restored. Given that nearby Craigievar Castle is closed during 2008/9 for restoration this might fill a gap as part of the same family and very much in their historical area of Aberdeenshire. Crathes Castle Spring Avenue cf130110jhp Crathes Castle spring daffodils avenue Royal Deeside Scottish Kincardineshire National Trust Scotland property building dates from the 16th century although the land belonged to the Burnett’s of Leys as a gift from Robert the Bruce in 1323. In the great hall is the Horn of Leys, supposedly a symbol of this grant. The tower house is one of the finest examples of the period and some of the original wall paintings still survive. This fortress occupies a site going back into Pictish or earlier times and has had an association with most aspects of Scottish history through its most turbulent times, most notable was the siege during Cromwell’s attempts to conquer Scotland and again in 1685 during the imprisonment of the Covenanters in the infamous Whigs Vault; viewed here during a sea mist or Haar. Other material included was gathered for other AA Publishing Guides including Shetland, Pitlochry and Tayside. New photographs are now included from 2012 book commission travels in Angus, Perth, Kinross, Trossachs and Tayside.
