Aurora Borealis or Northern Lights displays photographed taken over Aberdeeshire in Scotland since 1989 covering some 350 events with arc, rays, coronas with a wide rnage of shapes and colours
Pulsing Aurora au941017jhp Aurora Borealis Scotland Northern Lights pulsing flashing Cassiopeia March 1994 Aberdeenshire taken on the 10th March, 1994 at Crooktree, 25 miles west of Aberdeen looking to north. This photo taken at 00.25hrsUT but it never developed in an active display although it followed a better period from this previous evening starting around 20.55hrs seven nights in a row of displays which finished on the 11th March during one of the most active phases of the 90’s Solar Cycle. On the evening of the 9th and morning of the 10th there was a lot of flashes, like distant lightning, pulsing or patches of diffuse round light sources rather than the usual arc or rays. This photo was scanned from a 35mm colour slide film, Fuji RDP pushed processed for a 1600asa rating using a Nikon FM2, 28mm f2.8 lens wide open at around 20 seconds. Urban Aurora au74015jhp Scotland Aurora display rays folding arc waning Deeside rooftops shed Aberdeenshire taken over Banchory itself and was active between 1.30 and 2am on the 11th April, 1990. This display was an hour or so after an earlier display which I photographed at The Neuk between 10.40 and 11.30pm on the 10th. This display developed from pulsating patches of light which I noticed from my house on Station Road next to the East Church Manse around 1 to 1.15am BST and which developed into a full blown arc with very strong rays. What cannot be recorded is the amount of movement of the rays especially when tracking right to left but here creates the curtain like effect with the arc folding to create a horseshoe shape. In the photos the blue colour is of lower level nitrogen gas excitation and with a hint of purple towards the end of the display as against the more common occurrence of red and green oxygen gas. Some of the colour is muted as there was a full moon, the light of which is evident in the brightness of the houses as well as the colour from tungsten lamps from street lights. Of humorous interest is the appearance on bathroom lights while I was photographing in two adjacent houses and neither of the occupants knew a display was underway when I enquired afterwards. I have already added other photos taken using Fuji RSP11 35mm slide film rated at 1600asa and developed in this case at my local Lab in Aberdeen for 1600asa-pushed 2 stops. They were exposed around 20secs which from experience I had settled on as about the best combination of film, exposure time and with a 28mm or 24mm f2.8 wide angle lens so these are much brighter and more colour saturated although slightly more visual than would be seen with the human eye. Urban Aurora au7402ajhp Scotland Aurora Borealis rays folding arc Banchory urban town houses horseshoe blue nitrogen moonlight Deeside taken in Banchory itself and was active between 1.30 and 2am on the 11th April, 1990. This display was an hour or so after an earlier display which I photographed at The Neuk between 10.40 and 11.30pm on the 10th. This display developed from pulsating patches of light which I noticed from my house on Station Road next to the East Church Manse around 1 to 1.15am BST and which developed into a full blown arc with very strong rays. What cannot be recorded is the amount of movement of the rays especially when tracking right to left but here creates the curtain like effect with the arc folding to create a horseshoe shape. In the photos the blue colour is of lower level nitrogen gas excitation and with a hint of purple towards the end of the display as against the more common occurrence of red and green oxygen gas. Some of the colour is muted as there was a full moon, the light of which is evident in the brightness of the houses as well as the colour from tungsten lamps from street lights. Of humorous interest is the appearance on bathroom lights while I was photographing in two adjacent houses and neither of the occupants knew a display was underway when I enquired afterwards. I have already added other photos taken using Fuji RSP11 35mm slide film rated at 1600asa and developed in this case at my local Lab in Aberdeen for 1600asa-pushed 2 stops. They were exposed around 20secs which from experience I had settled on as about the best combination of film, exposure time and with a 28mm or 24mm f2.8 wide angle lens so these are much brighter and more colour saturated although slightly more visual than would be seen with the human eye. Nacreous-Clouds-wsc7017jhp Scotland Nacreous clouds Northwards roof Deeside Aberdeenshire beautiful colours PSCs rare winter event taken on the afternoon of 24th December, 2023 at Crooktree, 25 miles west of Aberdeen, at 16.02hrsUT and was discovered by accident during extremely strong gusty winds looking Northwards over the roof. These iridescent clouds are high altitude cirriform lenticular polar stratospheric, type 11 events, a rare winter sighting caused by twilight sunlight diffracted off ice crystals or water droplets with nitric or sulphuric acid content; sometimes called Mother of Pearl clouds because of the nature of the colour effect. This photograph was taken with a Nikon D700 full frame DSLR using a 28-300mm AF-S Nikkor ED zoom lens at f11 aperture, 28mm focal length, 1600 ISO with exposure of 1/10th second. Deeside-Partial-Eclipse-qax9462jhp Partial Solar Annular Eclipse Sun Moon Crescent June cloudy Aberdeenshire Scotland Deeside on the 10th June, 2021 over Aberdeenshire in North East Scotland near Kincardine O’Neil on Royal Deeside. There was a major cloud problem but luckily not all at the crucial moment. This is one of the first photos taken and shows the eclipse underway with the moon moving from the right and was taken at 10.39hrs UT. The maximum effect was about as is seen, with the next substantial partial eclipse being in 2026 and a total one in 2090. The peak of the display was around 10am UT but was obscured by cloud and this view was towards the end of the display when cloud thinned and the ‘bite’ had moved towards the left side of the sun. Pastel-Deeside-Sunset-qax7608jhp Deeside Scotland summer sunset clouds hilline Aberdeenshire Kincardine O’Neil is some 25 miles west of Aberdeen in North East Scotland. The most colourful period only lasts a few minutes so it is very much being in the right place at the best time but it helps having a forest or nice river scene on the doorstep but with a major mountain range to the west of Deeside, often the sun setting behind them or a large bank of rain cloud kills off the best of any last minute colour. The biggest problem with sunsets are they can take longer from the start of colourful clouds through to the more subtle final reds but every evening the shapes and nature of the clouds and light is different. This one was taken on the 10th August, 2020 around 9.14pm BST. It was later used by HM Queen Elizabeth on her annual holidays at the Castle until the Station was closed when the railway line was disbanded in 1966. Ballater Station Fire xcv7892jhp Ballater Old Station wooden shell fire destroyed May 2015 Royal Deeside Scottish Aberdeenshire town some 40 miles west of Aberdeen in Aberdeenshire in North East Scotland. The station was opened in 1866 and closed 100 years later in 1966 following the Beeching Cuts. The Station was as far as the Deeside Railway extended from Aberdeen and allowed Queen Victoria easier access to Balmoral Castle than previously travelling overland from Edzell. It was later used by HM Queen Elizabeth on her annual holidays at the Castle until the Station was closed when the railway line was disbanded in 1966. Unfortunately during the week of 10th May 2015 a fire has all but destroyed the wooden building as can be seen in this photograph, including the Waiting Room Museum, the restaurant area, some small businesses although a replica railway carriage as used by Queen Victoria was saved. The future of the station is uncertain but as a central part of the tourist experience in the town it will be a major loss. Ballater lies to the north of the River Dee it is a popular tourist centre for visitors travelling the length of this beautiful valley going southwards to Perth, visiting Balmoral Castle or Crathie Kirk or as a stopover before venturing northwards over the Lecht to Inverness.
