Aurora Borealis or Northern Lights displays photographed taken over Aberdeeshire in Scotland since 1989 covering some 350 events with arc, rays, coronas with a wide rnage of shapes and colours
Aurora Corona Forming aucf13108jhp Aurora Borealis Northern Lights Scottish corona green red rays west fan Deeside Aberdeenshire photos taken on the evening of the 30th at Crooktree, 25 miles west of Aberdeen looking from the east to the south. This digital photo was taken at 23.02.53hrsUT for 20secs, showing green and red oxygen rays sweeping down from the west a precursor of another corona strength display with the rays appearing suspended in the celestial heights with no sign of an arc. The cf131 digital sequence, starting at 22.58.22, shows the continuing activity following on from the very active night of the 29th/30th with another Corona to be viewed through until the last frame at 23.25 which was frustrated by complete cloud cover and rain. Photos were taken with both digital and slide film and the first slide film started at around 21.50hrsUT on the evening of the 30th when the extensive cloud cover cleared. The magnetometer on site showed vigorous activity from 21.30hrs. This digital photo was taken with a Fujifilm Finepix Digital S2Pro camera, at maximum ISO of 1600 using a Sigma 15mm f2.8 fisheye lens, giving a fairly undistorted wide angle image, wide open aperture with most exposures manually near the 20 seconds mark which experience suggested was around the best exposure for the low light Aurora displays. These were some of my first digital recordings taken during 2003 when the quality of digital cameras had at last matched 35mm slide film standards and the noise factor was superior to the grain created pushing 400asa slide film to 1600asa. It is probably the most vibrant of all the Egyptian centres street shopping centres as it caters not for the tourist and is always busy as it runs adjacent to the main River Nile waterfront for a mile or so. Originally erected by Senwosret 1 it is mainly supplanted by the current Ptolemaic creation dating from 237BC. Giza Khafre Pyramid EG024108jhp Chephren Pyramid Egyptian limestone blocks expanse Turah casing top, the second largest of the Gizah site monuments and constructed between 2558-2532BC during the reign of the Pharaoh Khafre [Greek name Chephren], one of Khufu’s sons and is responsible during a reign of around 25 years for the magnificent Funerary complex which is held to include The Sphinx. Although his Mortuary Temple is almost nothing but a foundation, his Valley Temple is a fantastic example of the skills of the early Egyptian craftsman with huge accurately cut pillars of granite which was the house after his death for numerous statues including the famous diorite one now in the Cairo Museum. This view is of the western face showing the mainly uncovered structure although remains of the outer casing of Tura Limestone can still be seen near the top. Deir el-Medina EG075108jhp Deir al-Medina Luxor Ancient Egyptian rock tombs 292 321 cliff face is located on the West Bank of the River Nile at Luxor lies to the west of Qurnet Murai hill and is the location of a workman's village with the remains of houses, streets, temples and chapels. The workers are known for their work in the Valley tombs which they reached walking over the Theban plateau. Most photographs show the streets, houses, interior with domestic bowls and grinding querns and others a general overview of the village with its tombs and rock tombs to the North West corner. There are also some exquisitely decorated underground tombs of which a couple are included in the entrance ticket. Tell Basta Column Carvings EG077108JHP Tell Basta Bastet temple column granite cartouche Butastis ancient Egyptian site Delta is a large complex near the town of Zagazig north of Cairo which has recently had a new visitors centre and museum built but remains a rather confusing collection of damaged material with the main temple of Bastet reflected in this photographs. Damaged by earthquakes some 2000 years ago as is seen in much of the structural damage today it is still fascinating with the excitement of finding beautiful carvings and examples of the craftsmanship of those ancient builders now hidden away amongst grass and a scatter field of damaged remnants from what was a huge cult site to the Cat Goddess Bastet visited by hundreds and thousands of pilgrims as recorded by Herodotus. Not usually part of normal Egyptian packages but can be visited privately and is part of an interesting day journey that should include Tanis as well. The fertile land supported the communities that built and later serviced these cult areas where the Valley Temple for instance would be the receiving place for offerings in memory of a particular Pharaoh after he became a God. The modern world needs food and these fertile areas still border the road from Cairo to Saqqara offering Egypt a substantial export business from dates to potatoes. Seheil Rock Carvings EG052641JHP Seheil Sehel Egyptian Aswan Island Rock Carvings Many Numbered Records on this site amongst the River Nile cataracts. The main reason for this private excursion by motorboat was to visit the rock carvings which cover this boulder strewn part of the Nile recording many events throughout the ancient history of the Egyptian Empire spanning some 3000 years although most were made in the 18-18 Dynasties. Most were the work of officials, often before they went to Nubia or reporting their efforts on return. The most notable carving is the Ptolemaic Famine Stele which refers to a famine during the reign of Doser, famous for the Step Pyramid at Saqqara, some 2000 years before. Altries Free Kirk asd8108jhp Aberdeenshire Maryculter Altries Kirk ruined disbanded Free United Scottish trees set in the beautiful rural landscape of North East Scotland south of the River Dee and in hinterland hardly any distance from the centre of the City of Aberdeen and the Oil Capital of Europe and very near the proposed arterial pass by beginning to take shape to the west of the City. The Kirk now in ruins dates from the late 1700’s, becoming a Free Church in 1843, United Free in 1900 and later Church of Scotland as Maryculter Altries Parish Kirk in 1929 but was disbanded in 1935. It lies to the east of the B979, south of the NDR to Netherley by the Crynoch Burn after taking the Burnside turn off. Spring Rainbow bnm3108jhp Double rainbow colourful sky Aberdeenshire Scotland weather evening bright sunlight and although not perhaps calendar material are none the less great photography subjects. The shapes, size and often awesome sense of power of clouds and often couple with rain storms and rainbows make them a subject I enjoy photographing and are a truer reflection perhaps of the great mix of weather and light we have in the North East of Scotland. One big headache is the rain that creates them so lenses have to be kept dry or covered as much as possible and it also appears in the images are short lines as it falls catching the sunlight although in these photos not a problem. This light evening light is particularly beautiful especially setting off the dark clouds. Morrone Woods xvv1080jhp Braemar Morrone walk track birch trees hills hills Quoich Scottish June summer evening near where it overlooks the River Dee and village is a popular base for hill walking in Cairngorms as well as skiing at nearby Glenshee on the road to Perth. Some signed walks start from the carpark at the top of Chapel Brae, which starts by the entrance to the Royal Highland Gathering Park and the main track leads to the Morrone marker with lovely views over the River Dee towards the west up past Mar Lodge to the Linn of Dee and northwards to the Cairngorms. The lower slops of Morrone Birkwood Nature Reserve are famous for the extensive covering of silver birch trees here looking northwards to Quoich with hills of Carn na Drochaide, Carn Dearg and carn na Criche off to the right. In the great hall is the Horn of Leys, supposedly a symbol of this grant. The tower house is one of the finest examples of the period and some of the original wall paintings still survive. Kinneff Kirk fgh2108jhp Kinneff Old Parish Church Mearns Aberdeenshire Scottish coast eastside regalia has its famous claim to Scottish History as the hiding place for eight years of the Scottish Regalia spirited away by Mrs Grainger, the Minister wife, from Dunnottar Castle. They were saved thus from the clutches of Cromwell’s troops in 1652 during the siege of the castle when his troops were attacking the Scottish Royalist troops loyal to Charles 11. The current church was rebuilt in 1738 on the site of the original one consecrated in 1242. The North aisle and staircase were added in 1876. The bell dates from 1679 and came from Rotterdam. 17th century wall tablets in the church commemorate Sir George Ogilvy of Barras who was Governor of Dunnottar Castle during the siege and who organised the smuggling of the regalia out of the castle. On a personal note, I had the privilege of photographing a re-enactment of what is thought to be how it was done for the current coloured version of the Dunnottar Castle Guidebook. Corse Castle Gunloop wyy4108jhp Scottish Corse Castle Aberdeenshire Mar Gunloop Musket Stone Wall Hole is located off B9119 Tarland road-take O’Neil Corse turnoff for a few hundred yards and is best viewed from road as very overgrown with stinging nettles and is not in good structural condition for exploring. Photographs show NW tower but basic structure is a shell with SE tower beyond. Still in Forbes family, probably built around late 1580’s by Patrick Forbes, Bishop of Aberdeen from 1564-1663. Fairly traditional Z-Plan tower-house of the area and in a state unlikely to be restored. Given that nearby Craigievar Castle is closed during 2008/9 for restoration this might fill a gap as part of the same family and very much in their historical area of Aberdeenshire. Esslemont Castle UP623108JHP Esslemont Castle Round Tower Ruin Fortress Ellon Aberdeenshire Buchan Photo Sunny is a 16th century tower house, viewed from public highway, built on earlier 14th Century site of the Mareschal’s and then passed to the Cheynes of Straloch through marriage. Was destroyed during feud between the Cheynes and Hays in 1493 and later rebuilt. Later owned by Earls of Errol but lost during Reformation conflicts. Later sold in 1728 to Robert Gordon and abandoned in 1769 in favour of a new Esslemont House built nearby. In a very ruined state and best viewed from the A920 just south of Ellon. Ruins in the photograph are from a 16th century castellated round tower of a large mansion house. Other material included was gathered for other AA Publishing Guides including Shetland, Pitlochry and Tayside. New photographs are now included from 2012 book commission travels in Angus, Perth, Kinross, Trossachs and Tayside.
