Aurora Borealis or Northern Lights displays photographed taken over Aberdeeshire in Scotland since 1989 covering some 350 events with arc, rays, coronas with a wide rnage of shapes and colours
Deeside Aurora aucf14106jhp Aurora Borealis Scottish arc folding rays colours winter west Deeside Aberdeenshire photographed near Kincardine O'Neil on Royal Deeside west of Aberdeen in the evening of 22nd November 2003, 25 miles west of Aberdeen. This followed a major storm on the 20th which with hindsight it was the biggest I have since on Deeside to date, 2018. This set of digital photos were taken from 21.42.02hrsUT for 17secs and these cf141 digital photos were taken at 1600ISO. The 8 photos in this cf141 sequence were taken in the space of about 20mins and followed the cf140 sequence taken in the early hours of the 21st. This photo showing an active display with bright arc and rays to west of North with tail of The Plough on right edge. This digital photo was taken with a Fujifilm Finepix Digital S2Pro camera using a Sigma 15mm f2.8 fisheye lens, giving a fairly undistorted wide angle image, wide open aperture with most exposures manually near the 20 second mark which experience suggested was around the best exposure for the low light Aurora displays. These were digital recordings taken during 2003 when the quality of digital cameras had at last matched 35mm slide film standards and the noise factor was superior to the grain created pushing 400asa slide film to 1600asa. Aurora Corona Forming aucf13106jhp Aurora Borealis Northern Lights Scotland corona green red rays sweeping east Deeside Aberdeenshire photos taken on the evening of the 30th at Crooktree, 25 miles west of Aberdeen looking from the east to the south. This digital photo was taken at 23.02.11hrsUT for 18secs, showing green and red oxygen rays sweeping down from the east a precursor of another corona strength display with the rays appearing suspended in the celestial heights with no sign of an arc. The cf131 digital sequence, starting at 22.58.22, shows the continuing activity following on from the very active night of the 29th/30th with another Corona to be viewed through until the last frame at 23.25 which was frustrated by complete cloud cover and rain. Photos were taken with both digital and slide film and the first slide film started at around 21.50hrsUT on the evening of the 30th when the extensive cloud cover cleared. The magnetometer on site showed vigorous activity from 21.30hrs. This digital photo was taken with a Fujifilm Finepix Digital S2Pro camera, at maximum ISO of 1600 using a Sigma 15mm f2.8 fisheye lens, giving a fairly undistorted wide angle image, wide open aperture with most exposures manually near the 20 seconds mark which experience suggested was around the best exposure for the low light Aurora displays. These were some of my first digital recordings taken during 2003 when the quality of digital cameras had at last matched 35mm slide film standards and the noise factor was superior to the grain created pushing 400asa slide film to 1600asa. Aurora Glen Dye au61065jhp Scotland Aurora Borealis display Clachnaben hill torr Glen Dye autumn September 1989 taken from Heatheryhaugh just above steep climb out of Glen Dye on the road to the Cairn O’Mount and which looks across to Clachnaben, the notable hill with a tor rocky outcrop which makes it visible from much of Deeside when looking south. This photo is one of the first I took of an Aurora display and came just after midnight when clouds cleared and made the stars and night sky visible. The project to photograph an Aurora came after a missed opportunity earlier in the year in March with what became known as the Big Aurora, a full Corona over Deeside. I had got the idea of trying to photograph a display following on from my success in 1986 of capturing Halley’s Comet thanks to the support of the Astronomy Ian Shepherd at the Edinburgh Observatory. I had heard about the Big Aurora but had missed the display buried away in my darkroom processing B&W photos for the local newspaper. Ian suggested I contact John MacNicol, President of the Aberdeen Astronomy Society and he eventually tipped me off about the display captured here. I took Fuji RHP 400asa and RSP 11, rated at 1600ASA, the fastest available at the time in 35mm slide film of which this photo is an example and I tried both as well as bracketing exposures around the 20 second mark based on my experiences with photographing the Comet. Instead of a telephoto lens as per the Comet, for Aurora I used my widest lens, a Nikkor 28mm with a f2.8 widest aperture. Push processing the slide film at the Fuji lab by two stops to the equivalent of 1600asa I found that an exposure around 20 second eventually gave the best results for best colour saturation and exposure and giving the maximum control of grain without it appearing washed out from underexposure. This basic arrangement eventually worked best when I moved to a DSLR Fuji S2 in 2003 with an ISO of 1600 giving comparable results to the ASA equivalent and the noise factor was akin to the grain of slide film. As I shot my general landscape work using Fuji I stayed with it for the Aurora although Kodak film was acceptable in quality and results. I felt that the Fuji film handled the reds and greens better anyway and these are in practice the primary colours of Aurora displays when oxygen is excited by the incoming electrons. Aswan Souk Street Advert EG053106JHP Aswan Egyptian Souk Photo Bazaar House Billboard soft drink Tang advert in this busy area adjacent to the promenade is full of colourful street stalls and shops selling clothing, perfume bottles, spices; toys; leather goods, jewellery as well as all the necessities of common day life for local Egyptians from food, fruit, meat, eggs to all the household wares that any large supermarket would stock. It is probably the most vibrant of all the Egyptian centres street shopping centres as it caters not for the tourist and is always busy as it runs adjacent to the main River Nile waterfront for a mile or so. Giza Khafre Pyramid EG024106jhp Khafre Chephren Pyramid ancient Egypt limestone blocks Tura casing blue sky top, the second largest of the Gizah site monuments and constructed between 2558-2532BC during the reign of the Pharaoh Khafre [Greek name Chephren], one of Khufu’s sons and is responsible during a reign of around 25 years for the magnificent Funerary complex which is held to include The Sphinx. Although his Mortuary Temple is almost nothing but a foundation, his Valley Temple is a fantastic example of the skills of the early Egyptian craftsman with huge accurately cut pillars of granite which was the house after his death for numerous statues including the famous diorite one now in the Cairo Museum. This view is of the western face showing the mainly uncovered structure although remains of the outer casing of Tura Limestone can still be seen near the top. This magnificent mortuary temple is located on the West Bank of the River Nile at Luxor at an area called Deir el-Bahri and built into the base of the cliffs of the Theban Hill behind which are branches of the Valley of the Kings. Deir el-Medina EG075106jhp Deir al-Madinah Luxor Egypt Ruins streets Ramasseum Hathor temple Ptolemaic is located on the West Bank of the River Nile at Luxor lies to the west of Qurnet Murai hill and is the location of a workman's village with the remains of houses, streets, temples and chapels. The workers are known for their work in the Valley tombs which they reached walking over the Theban plateau. Most photographs show the streets, houses, interior with domestic bowls and grinding querns and others a general overview of the village with its tombs and rock tombs to the North West corner. There are also some exquisitely decorated underground tombs of which a couple are included in the entrance ticket. This photograph shows the pan-bedded mudbrick enclosure wall around the Ptolemaic Tempe of Hathor and the distant Ramasseum with the fertile west bank beyond. Tell Basta Column Base EG077106JHP Tell Basta Bastet temple column base hall ancient Egypt site photo Delta is a large complex near the town of Zagazig north of Cairo which has recently had a new visitors centre and museum built but remains a rather confusing collection of damaged material with the main temple of Bastet reflected in this photographs. Damaged by earthquakes some 2000 years ago as is seen in much of the structural damage today it is still fascinating with the excitement of finding beautiful carvings and examples of the craftsmanship of those ancient builders now hidden away amongst grass and a scatter field of damaged remnants from what was a huge cult site to the Cat Goddess Bastet visited by hundreds and thousands of pilgrims as recorded by Herodotus. Not usually part of normal Egyptian packages but can be visited privately and is part of an interesting day journey that should include Tanis as well. The fertile land supported the communities that built and later serviced these cult areas where the Valley Temple for instance would be the receiving place for offerings in memory of a particular Pharaoh after he became a God. The modern world needs food and these fertile areas still border the road from Cairo to Saqqara offering Egypt a substantial export business from dates to potatoes. Situated on one of two hills both of which show evidence of early use as fortified strongholds, they are near Insch in Aberdeenshire. It is accessed by a steep but short climb from a minor road to Clashindarroch Forest and there is a small signed carpark area. Thsi view is taken near Coldhome on the road looking eastwards over Insch that heads and one can cut back to the Pictish Picardy Symbol Stone at Netherton. Some signed walks start from the carpark at the top of Chapel Brae, which starts by the entrance to the Royal Highland Gathering Park and the main track leads to the Morrone marker with lovely views over the River Dee towards the west up past Mar Lodge to the Linn of Dee and northwards to the Cairngorms. The lower slops of Morrone are famous for the extensive covering of silver birch trees. The motte can be seen from the road after crossing the Water of Nochty Bridge and after the right hand turn to Lost with its famous sign. A public carpark is opposite the motte, an ancient Pictish fort site in origin, later reinforced for the Earldom of Mar in the 1100,s but later redundant with the construction of Glenbuchat Castle further to the east and strategically placed above the other entrance to the Glen. The Doune of Invernochty is one of the largest such Norman castle motte’s in Scotland and although making use of an existing glacial deposit the mound was shaped to large proportions and is thought to have included a high status chapel as well as the fortified structure. The surrounding ditch could have been flooded as remains of a man made lake whose eastern retaining bank can still be seen. Other material included was gathered for other AA Publishing Guides including Shetland, Pitlochry and Tayside. New photographs are now included from 2012 book commission travels in Angus, Perth, Kinross, Trossachs and Tayside.

River Dee Bridge xvv1106jhp Old Brig O'Dee River Forest Hills Dark Clouds Sunlight Invercauld is cared for by Historic Scotland and is one of the many military bridges built after the Forty Five Rebellion and that carried troops across the Highlands. This was built by Major Caulfield 1752 although often called a General Wade bridge who started the process many years earlier. The bridge is located just east of Braemar and this view is from the modern road bridge which crosses the River Dee to the North.
