Aurora Borealis or Northern Lights displays photographed taken over Aberdeeshire in Scotland since 1989 covering some 350 events with arc, rays, coronas with a wide rnage of shapes and colours

Aurora Borealis Scottish dispersed green arc Plough winter north Deeside Aberdeenshire photographed near Kincardine O'Neil on Royal Deeside west of Aberdeen in the evening of 22nd November 2003, 25 miles west of Aberdeen. This followed a major storm on the 20th which with hindsight it was the biggest I have since on Deeside to date, 2018. This set of digital photos were taken from 21.32hrsUT for 16secs and these cf141 digital photos were taken at 1600ISO. The 8 photos in this cf141 sequence were taken in the space of about 20mins and followed the cf140 sequence taken in the early hours of the 21st. This photo showing early stages of a display with bright arc patches prior to rays forming slightly west of due North. This digital photo was taken with a Fujifilm Finepix Digital S2Pro camera using a Sigma 15mm f2.8 fisheye lens, giving a fairly undistorted wide angle image, wide open aperture with most exposures manually near the 20 second mark which experience suggested was around the best exposure for the low light Aurora displays. These were digital recordings taken during 2003 when the quality of digital cameras had at last matched 35mm slide film standards and the noise factor was superior to the grain created pushing 400asa slide film to 1600asa.

Aurora Borealis Scotland Pleiades East green red rays rooftop Deeside Aberdeenshire photos taken on the evening of the 30th at Crooktree, 25 miles west of Aberdeen looking from the east to the south. This digital photo was taken at 22.59.03hrsUT for 20secs, showing green and red oxygen rays and the start of another corona strength display looking eastwards. The cf131 digital sequence, starting at 22.58.22, shows the continuing activity following on from the very active night of the 29th/30th with another Corona to be viewed through until the last frame at 23.25 which was frustrated by complete cloud cover and rain. Photos were taken with both digital and slide film and the first slide film started at around 21.50hrsUT on the evening of the 30th when the extensive cloud cover cleared. The magnetometer on site showed vigorous activity from 21.30hrs. This digital photo was taken with a Fujifilm Finepix Digital S2Pro camera, at maximum ISO of 1600 using a Sigma 15mm f2.8 fisheye lens, giving a fairly undistorted wide angle image, wide open aperture with most exposures manually near the 20 seconds mark which experience suggested was around the best exposure for the low light Aurora displays. These were some of my first digital recordings taken during 2003 when the quality of digital cameras had at last matched 35mm slide film standards and the noise factor was superior to the grain created pushing 400asa slide film to 1600asa.

Aurora Borealis Scottish Ursa Major October clouds faint rays northwards Deeside Aberdeenshire Scotland two photos taken on the evening of the 15th October, 2003 at Crooktree, 25 miles west of Aberdeen looking to north. This photo was taken at 23.05.37hrsUT for 17secs showing faint suggestion of ray activity with the yellow green oxygen gas in low grade arc and the constellation Ursa Major, The Plough or Big Dipper is just discernible behind the increasing cloud cover. I took 4 frames over 30 mins, using my Fujifilm Finepix Digital S2Pro camera, at maximum ISO of 1600 using a Sigma 16mm f2.8 fisheye lens, giving a fairly undistorted wide angle image, wide open aperture with most exposures manually near the 20 seconds mark which experience suggested was around the best exposure for the low light Aurora displays. These were some of my earliest digital recordings taken during 2003 when the quality of digital cameras had at last matched 35mm slide film standards and for this display, sandwiched between 27th July and 28th October, I took no slide film. At 1600 ISO the noise factor was not a problem and the general look of the images were better than the corresponding slide film with 400asa stock pushed two stops to give an equivalent sensitivity level of 1600asa. There was a full moon that night sitting off to the east of this north facing display.

Aswan Egyptian Souk Bazaar jewellery glass necklaces bangles beads stall near the promenade is full of colour with stalls and shops selling clothing, perfume bottles, spices; toys; leather goods, jewellery as well as all the necessities of common day life for local Egyptians from food, fruit, meat, eggs to all the household wares that any large supermarket would stock. It is probably the most vibrant of all the Egyptian centres street shopping centres as it caters not for the tourist and is always busy as it runs adjacent to the main River Nile waterfront for a mile or so.

Giza Egyptian Sphinx Khafre Chephren Paws Stele sideon limestone blocks this giant carved limestone lion statue with human head is somewhat of an enigma, but most likely carved out of an outcrop as an inspirational homage to the Pharaoh Khafre some 2500BC whose pyramid is directly behind it, although some attribute it to the previous Khufu who built the first and Greatest Pyramid. This huge prone lion figure with a human face faces the east to the rising sun and the modern day Cairo and is a very popular destination for the thousands that visit the Giza plateau and here viewed from the most accessible point on causeway from Khafre Pyramid to his Valley Temple.

The lidless sarcophagus in this photo is made in red Aswan granite as are the blocks making the tomblike chamber. Hatshepsut Temple Luxor Egyptian approach cliffs crowds tourists busy Theban hill was opened again in 2002 and makes the visit to this magnificent temple almost complete except that entrance into the burial chamber itself is restricted. This magnificent mortuary temple is located on the West Bank of the River Nile at Luxor at an area called Deir el-Bahri and built into the base of the cliffs of the Theban Hill behind which are branches of the Valley of the Kings.

Deir al-Madinah Luxor Ancient Egypt shaft mudbrick lined tomb is located on the West Bank of the River Nile at Luxor lies to the west of Qurnet Murai hill and is the location of a workman's village with the remains of houses, streets, temples and chapels. The workers are known for their work in the Valley tombs which they reached walking over the Theban plateau. Most photographs show the streets, houses, interior with domestic bowls and grinding querns and others a general overview of the village with its tombs and rock tombs to the North West corner. There are also some exquisitely decorated underground tombs of which a couple are included in the entrance ticket.

Modern Egypt Delta Town Street Mercedes Dealer Shop Front Photograph in the area near the town of Zigazig north of Cairo which has recently had a new visitors centre and museum built for its Bubastis Temple Site which still remains a rather confusing collection of damaged material with the main temple of Bastet reflected in this photographs. Damaged by earthquakes some 2000 years ago as is seen in much of the structural damage today it is still fascinating with the excitement of finding beautiful carvings and examples of the craftsmanship of those ancient builders now hidden away amongst grass and a scatter field of damaged remnants from what was a huge cult site to the Cat Goddess Bastet visited by hundreds and thousands of pilgrims as recorded by Herodotus. Not usually part of normal Egyptian packages these sorts of town images are part of a private trip into the northern areas of Egypt part of an interesting day journey that should include Tanis as well.

Most were the work of officials, often before they went to Nubia or reporting their efforts on return. The most notable carving is the Ptolemaic Famine Stele which refers to a famine during the reign of Doser, famous for the Step Pyramid at Saqqara, some 2000 years before.

Dunnideer Hillfort Prehistoric Ruin Insch Aberdeenshire Scotland Summer Photo of this site although the remains now visible were one of the oldest stone castles in Scotland, built around 1260. Situated on one of two hills both of which show evidence of early use as fortified strongholds, they are near Insch in Aberdeenshire. It is accessed by a steep but short climb from a minor road to Clashindarroch Forest and there is a small signed carpark area.

Often the shapes and range and vibrancy of the colours defies descriptions and can only be seen to be believed; my experience is that the colourful phase only lasts for at most 20 minutes so it is often being in the right place at the right time and best photographed using a tripod as the light levels mean longer exposures especially at best quality ISO settings. This year there has been several colourful displays in December, the particular photo was taken on the morning of the 30th at around 08.45.

Dunnottar Scottish Castle Haar Shrouded Mist Ghostly Fortress Cliffs Aberdeenshire ruin stands proud on a spectacular headland jutting out into the North Sea south of Stonehaven in Aberdeenshire. This fortress occupies a site going back into Pictish or earlier times and has had an association with most aspects of Scottish history through its most turbulent times, most notable was the siege during Cromwellâ€™s attempts to conquer Scotland and again in 1685 during the imprisonment of the Covenanters in the infamous Whigs Vault; viewed here during a sea mist or Haar.

Craigievar Castle Mar Province Scottish Wall Round House Turrets Aberdeenshire National Trust Scotland property is situated about 6 miles south of Alford A980 and is open to the public from March to end of August although closed during 2008/9 for major renovation on the exterior it is open again as of 2010. Grounds are normally open all year round.
Example of the best in Scottish Baronial architecture, dating from 1626, and is unspoiled since being relinquished to the NTS by the Forbes-Sempill family.

River Deveron Turriff water riverbanks autumn Inverkeithny opposite bank Cobblehouse Aberdeenshire Scotland Turriff is one of Aberdeenshire’s famous salmon fishing rivers, rising on the slopes of The Buck in the Cabrach and flowing into the Moray Firth at Banff. Here it is photographed on a small back road accessed off the Turriff to Aberchirder B9025 at the Meikle Ribrae and which winds its way along the course of the River-this photo is taken opposite Inverkeithny near Cobblehouse.

Quoich Water river rocks slabs high view looking down pine trees Aberdeenshire Scottish is located east of the Linn of Dee on the North side of the River Dee west of Braemar. Passing another even more spectacular gorge at the Linn of Dee west of Braemar as the road goes deeper into Glen Dee and the Linn is a popular visiting place because of the dangerous and spectacular nature of the river crashing though this narrow cleft in the granite rocks. A public carpark nearby is ideal parking for walkers heading north into the Cairngorms or westwards past the Chest of Dee into Glen Tilt and on to Blair Atholl. From the Linn it is a slightly longer drive taking the metalled road to its end at the Quoich past the back of Mar Lodge to a new National Trust carpark and the main starting point for walks to Beinn A’Bhuird and beyond.

In the summer the riverbank can be mobbed with picnickers and swimmers while it is also a popular salmon fishing stretch and the narrow turbulent water good for canoeing.
