Aurora Borealis or Northern Lights displays photographed taken over Aberdeeshire in Scotland since 1989 covering some 350 events with arc, rays, coronas with a wide rnage of shapes and colours
Aurora-Borealis-behind-clouds-wsc6824jhp Aurora Borealis Scotland cloud obscured display Deeside covered Aberdeenshire taken on the evening of 5th November, 2023 at Crooktree, 25 miles west of Aberdeen, at 20.05hrsUT and was indicated by the magnetometer readings on AuroraWatch as a Major Storm. As the photo shows it was completely obscured by dense cloud cover with a few gaps-enough to see some light. It then went 100% covered and despite a power display in progress nothing could be seen. This photograph was taken with a Nikon D700 full frame DSLR using a Tokina SD zoom at f5.6 aperture, ISO setting of 6400 for 10 seconds. The increased ISO sensitivity of modern DSLR’s allows for shorter exposures circa 10 sec average times giving more accurate recordings of these moving. Clouds increased and displays during the rest of the evening were not seen. I use the older manual lenses as they are much easier to set at Infinity, modern zoom lenses are harder to focus on infinity especially in very dark conditions. No additional filters are added. A low grade Arc was visible to the North, beneath Cassiopeia at 21.44, it went active shortly afterwards with faint multiple rays with bright bases on the arc and some lateral movement, North to West and it died down again very quickly at 21.47UT, allowing approximately 10 exposures. Colours not visible to the human eye to the brightness this photo records. Magnetometer suggested possible further activity but by 22.00 there was 100% cloud cover. This photograph was taken with a Nikon D700 full frame DSLR using a 28mm Nikkor f2.8 lens at f4 aperture, ISO3200 for 8 seconds at 21.47.18hrsUT and was my last exposure as it almost disappeared at this stage. Small meteor burn out visible about 1/3 in from left just in the faint purple band. Colours not visible to the human eye to the brightness this photo records. Magnetometer suggested possible further activity but by 22.00 there was 100% cloud cover. Aswan Souk Dress Colors EG053100JHP Aswan Souk Bazaar clothing shop colourful street display scarfs, shawls, dresses, near the promenade is full of colourful street stalls and shops selling clothing, perfume bottles, spices; toys; leather goods, jewellery as well as all the necessities of common day life for local Egyptians from food, fruit, meat, eggs to all the household wares that any large supermarket would stock. It is probably the most vibrant of all the Egyptian centres street shopping centres as it caters not for the tourist and is always busy as it runs adjacent to the main River Nile waterfront for a mile or so. Deir el-Medina EG075100jhp Deir el-Medina Luxor Ancient Egyptian Ruins chapels tombs cliff face is located on the West Bank of the River Nile at Luxor lies to the west of Qurnet Murai hill and is the location of a workman's village with the remains of houses, streets, temples and chapels. The workers are known for their work in the Valley tombs which they reached walking over the Theban plateau. Most photographs show the streets, houses, interior with domestic bowls and grinding querns and others a general overview of the village with its tombs and rock tombs to the North West corner. There are also some exquisitely decorated underground tombs of which a couple are included in the entrance ticket. Luxor Menna Tomb EG9410023jhp Egypt Luxor Menna Wife Banquet eye damage food details Tomb Reliefs is one of many beautiful tomb decorations amongst the Tombs of the Nobles on the West Bank of the River Nile at Luxor. The Menna Tomb-Chapel is cruciform in design located in the Upper Enclosure [Tomb 69] was a Scribe of the Royal Fields during the reign of Thutmosis 1V around 1400BC. This was one of the first Tombs of the Nobles I visited in 1994 as this photo records and I was taken immediately by the colourful painted reliefs, difficult to photograph as protected by Perspex sheeting and only lit by reflected light done by the custodians. The area around the Tombs has now been greatly improved with removal of many of the old modern houses and entry to these fascinating burial sites made more accessible. Visits to these tombs tend to be privately organised rather than being part of a package tour but it is easily organised with a taxi from the East Bank hotels, payment for selected tombs is made at the ticket office beforehand near the Colossi of Memnon with the area being very close to the ticket office. Photography certainly the last time I was in Egypt in 2007 had been banned in all the tombs so these photos although not very good technically are useful as a record of the nature of the tombs and especially their paintings. These images have not been sharpened during post production but will benefit from some USM sharpening prior to use. Hand held as no tripods were allowed and using slide film, Fuji RDP 100asa, did not give great leeway to get decent photos, oh for my Nikon DSLR with 6400ISO. The hand reflected lighting used in some tombs causes a hot spot and nothing by way of a balanced light but it is daylight balanced. However being direct sunlight reflected off tin foil would probably being doing more damage to the paintings than a suitable wide angle flash with UV filter. Given that most of the paints used in these tombs is mineral based then actually either method would do no measurable damage. The Perspex sheeting, however inconvenient, is to stop the physical touching of the paintings accidentally or otherwise, by inquisitive hands or swinging backpacks, and is absolutely vital protection to preserve these invaluable unique irreplaceable paintings. Some of the obvious damage to the paintings is not all modern, as his eyes have been gouged out possibly by an enemy in ancient times. Ramose Tomb Relief EG10036JHP Ramose Tomb Relief Luxor Egypt Foreign Faces Ambassadors Interior Photograph, one of many beautiful tomb decorations amongst the Tombs of the Nobles on the West Bank of the River Nile at Luxor. Ramose Tomb-Chapel in the Lower Enclosure [Tomb 55] was a Vizier and Governor towards the end of the reign of Amenhotep 111 and beginning of the Amarna period of Akhenaten and this is reflected in the change of style of the reliefs in his tomb. This was the first Tomb of the Nobles I visited in 1994 and I have noticed a fading of the coloured funerary procession frieze in the top left-hand corner since then. The area around the Tombs, especially the approach to Ramose, has now been greatly improved with removal of many of the old modern houses and entry to these fascinating burial sites made more accessible. Ramose Tomb-Chapel in the Lower Enclosure [Tomb 55] was a Vizier and Governor towards the end of the reign of Amenhotep 111 and beginning of the Amarna period of Akhenaten and this is reflected in the change of style of the reliefs in his tomb. Egyptian Car Dealership EG057100JHP Modern Egyptian Delta Town Street Shop Front Cars Dealer Spares in the area near the town of Zigazig north of Cairo which has recently had a new visitors centre and museum built for its Bubastis Temple Site which still remains a rather confusing collection of damaged material with the main temple of Bastet reflected in this photographs. Damaged by earthquakes some 2000 years ago as is seen in much of the structural damage today it is still fascinating with the excitement of finding beautiful carvings and examples of the craftsmanship of those ancient builders now hidden away amongst grass and a scatter field of damaged remnants from what was a huge cult site to the Cat Goddess Bastet visited by hundreds and thousands of pilgrims as recorded by Herodotus. Not usually part of normal Egyptian packages these sorts of town images are part of a private trip into the northern areas of Egypt part of an interesting day journey that should include Tanis as well. Often the shapes and range and vibrancy of the colours defies descriptions and can only be seen to be believed; my experience is that the colourful phase only lasts for at most 20 minutes so it is often being in the right place at the right time and best photographed using a tripod as the light levels mean longer exposures especially at best quality ISO settings. This year there has been several colourful displays in December, the particular photo was taken on the morning of the 30th at around 08.45. The original station was opened in 1866 and closed 100 years later in 1966 following the Beeching Cuts. The Station was as far as the Deeside Railway extended from Aberdeen and allowed Queen Victoria easier access to Balmoral Castle than previously travelling overland from Edzell. It was later used by HM Queen Elizabeth on her annual holidays at the Castle until the Station was closed when the railway line was disbanded in 1966. Happily the new station will once more be a central part of the tourist experience in the town. Ballater lies to the north of the River Dee it is a popular tourist centre for visitors travelling the length of this beautiful valley going southwards to Perth, visiting Balmoral Castle or Crathie Kirk or as a stopover before venturing northwards over the Lecht to Inverness. Numbers are better this year, 2017, although still down on 20 years ago when 100plus was not unusual. So far this year I have counted over 50 at one time, mainly Peacocks and Red Admirals with a couple of Small Tortoiseshells and one Dark Green Fritillary but some good sunny spells seems to have got them active. One surprise was to find a Golden Ringed Dragonfly hanging from a buddleia early in the morning, no movement of any kind while I photographed it but it had gone 10 mins later when I came out again. In the great hall is the Horn of Leys, supposedly a symbol of this grant. The tower house is one of the finest examples of the period and some of the original wall paintings still survive. Dunnideer Castle Insch VQ9100JHP Dunnideer Hillfort Hilltop Perched Ruin Walls Aberdeenshire Scotland Spring Trees Gorse is a prehistoric site but the remains now visible were one of the oldest stone castles in Scotland, built around 1260. Situated on one of two hills both of which show evidence of early use as fortified strongholds, they are near Insch in Aberdeenshire. It is accessed by a steep but short climb from a minor road to Clashindarroch Forest and there is a small signed carpark area. Example of the best in Scottish Baronial architecture, dating from 1626, and is unspoiled since being relinquished to the NTS by the Forbes-Sempill family. Quoich Water fgh3100jhp Quoich Water river rocks waterfall view over Deeside Glen Aberdeenshire Scottish is located east of the Linn of Dee on the North side of the River Dee west of Braemar. Passing another even more spectacular gorge at the Linn of Dee west of Braemar as the road goes deeper into Glen Dee and the Linn is a popular visiting place because of the dangerous and spectacular nature of the river crashing though this narrow cleft in the granite rocks. A public carpark nearby is ideal parking for walkers heading north into the Cairngorms or westwards past the Chest of Dee into Glen Tilt and on to Blair Atholl. From the Linn it is a slightly longer drive taking the metalled road to its end at the Quoich past the back of Mar Lodge to a new National Trust carpark and the main starting point for walks to Beinn A’Bhuird and beyond. Please note that with this photo extra sharpening maybe needed as it was taken with an old prime 24mm lenses which does not have the ideal resolution of the D700 DSLR.
